I didn’t get a chance to enter this Musuem but I walked around it one fine evening. The building looks amazing but needs a lot of restoration work. It seriously needs uplift to make it awesome. The Musuem is inside the University of Mysore campus which is quite hard for many to find it. I saw it by accident.I plan to visit the Musuem one day soon. In the meantime, just enjoy these outside photos of the Musuem.
It is closed but showing open in Google.Although the Mysore University is something to wander around.
Not well-known place but need to visit defiantly. It is in mysore University and lots of different attractions at same place. Muesiam is so nice and worth to visit it to know lots of information. From oldest rock monuments to new and modern dance forms, from old history of freedom fighter to new well known persons everything is placed here. Camera is not allowed and entrence is free.
Coz its monumental,!!
A PLACE NEVER TO FORGET. THE COLLECTION IS UNBELIEVABLE. THE BUILDING ITSELF IS WORTH VISITING AS IT HAS BEEN TAGGED AS HERITAGE BUILDING. EXCELLENT PLACE FOR KIDS AS THEY CAN ENJOY THE COLLECTION OF OLD AGE ARTICALS THEIR FORE- FATHERS USED FOR LIVING. FOR ELDERS IT WILL RECOLLECTION OF GOOD OLD GOLDEN MEMORIES. IT IS A MUST VISIT TO ALL IRESPECTIVE OF AGE.
A very beautiful building inside the manasa gangotri university premises. Most of the building parts are not in use. One of the part is left for museum.
Situated in University of Mysore Campus, this Folklore Museum in Mysuru, Karnataka is home to one of the vast collections of folk art, products and articles. Visit the museum to witness one of the most sprawling depictions of the states folk art. It is beautiful and you can refresh your folklore knowledge here. Good Luck.
Nice for Long walk in fresh air under lot of green and peacocks. Its My Favorite good old garden for Morning walks
Place inside Maysuru University. Not so well maintained. You will like this place if you want to see Indian art culture.
Helpful staff!Would be great if more signs told people about the pieces. But the guy working there gave me a sort of free guided tour so was fine and I learnt quite a lot. It’s free which is nice
Its got archaeology section as well as folklore section. I wish there were some tour guide. But dont miss out on this place.
It is situated in the beautiful Mysore University campus. It has lots of interesting things for history lovers, just wish they were marked better (which period, little background etc.) and had better lighting. Also, the curator and staff needs to be more knowledgeable..they are very disinterested in sharing information. But just to feel the palace and check out dolls, masks, yakshagana photographs and gears from another era it is an important destination in the Mysore itinerary.
Situated inside Mysore campus, wide variety of artifacts, historical cultural things, folk designs and paintings are well preserved here. This place gives us the same experience of ancient and medieval India. The stone inscriptions are also well explained here giving us deep insights.
They have a great collection of Folk items from the region especially the yakshagaana ensembles. Its great to see them. However the museum can be upgraded with some demo, real or recorded
Awesome place and great architecture.
Cool museum
My most favorite place in university. Im spend lovely moments in that
It is an historic place.Built by Mysore Wadiyars - the Royal dynasty.Located inside the Manasagangothri campus of University of Mysore.Externally it may appear as a old palace. It is not well maintained. But it has a significant place in Heritage of Mysore.A must place to visit for tourists coming to Mysore (Mysuru).
One of the best place to be watched in mysuru(KGF movie garuda entry scene location)
It,s good
Best place for the social programs and events concerned with entertainment!
They have a great collection of Folk items from the region especially the yakshagaana esembles. Its great to see them. However the museum can be upgraded with some demo, real or recorded
Hidden gem in the heart of the city. This place has 3 sections, first has collections many artifacts from stone age to modern day. Second is dedicated to arts & yakshagana folk arts. Last one is the actual Palace built by H. H. KRISHNARAJA WODEYAR for his beloved sister jayalakshmi hence the name jayalakshmi vilas Palace is dedicated to all kanna poets & their works are on display. Truely mesmerising, must visit place. Apparently mobile phones arent allowed inside the museum.
Beautiful old Palace with a inspite into Karnataka history from prehistoric times to recent
Some of the rare artifacts which may not have any value for people who seek awesomeness but if you can be thrilled by looking at the history in front of your eyes then this is the place for you.I am not talking about a couple of hundred years of history but a couple of millennia or even more than that. It was such an exciting experience.
Ancient art
Its a very historical place, the museum itself is built in the guidance of Jaya Chamarajendra wadiyar, so its an amazing piece of architecture. Also the museum contains a lot of info which is the reason why smartphones and cameras are not allowed inside. Overall its a beautiful museum where time can be well spent.

The place to visit Arts of Crafts of Kannada.. it purely depicts their history.. history and art lovers must watch place and its not capable for families
One of the best heritage building in mysore .peace place
Jayalakshmi vilas place. Beautiful Heritage building within University. But very badly maintained. Most of the parts damaged. Plants are growing on terrace & walls damaging the building.
A lot of old manuscripts are preserved and certain instruments from the old era. Some pots are restored from Harappa and Mohenjodaro civilisations. Worth a small visit while you are waiting/staying in University of Mysore.
Best and heritage place in the Mysore university campus

Hiratage building. morning walk, good air, vehicles are not allowed
Nice place. There is a collection of old age things .They have collected things of mahatma gandhiji, kuvempu, and many other great personalities.
Well this is my 100th time in Mysore, instead of keep repeating the same place I try to find different places every time. This is a gem of a place, there is not much publicity but its worth a visit. Its a palace belonging to one of the royal daughters. Its a museum with lot of collected items. Entry is free, no photography inside. You can spend easily about 2 hours here. I highly recommend visiting here. They have two story structure, so some climbing the stairs involved, old people might find it bit difficult as climbing on floor is equivalent of climbing modern 3 story building. I enjoyed every bit of it.
Mysuru University is iconic as it has spread over hundreds of acres consisting of a beautiful lake, flora, fauna as well as many palaces. And of course folk lore museum was a palace previously. The museum hosts varieties of mud vessels of Harappan civilizations replica, Mysore Sandal Soap used by Mahatma Gandhi when he stayed in Kodagu. Many dolls and puppets made out of wood and leather which were once used to entertain people and now the art itself being at the verge of extinction can be seen here. Do visit and respect, conserve, reserve.
Good place to know about history and old things
A very good museum in the heart of mysore. Its a big place of many books and paintings kept. It will minimum take you atleast two hours to complete the whole and they close at 5.30. Make sure you go before that time.
A hidden gem! The museum is set in 3 halls of the manor. Room 1 - archaeological finds from the india valley civilisation and later. Room 2- exhibits of traditional folkdance costumes, ancient puppets and toys with moving parts. Room 3- exhibits of kannada literature and personal effects of renowned authors (this section is housed in an elaborately decorated room with intricately carved woodwork, a marvel in itself. Very rudimentary labels on the exhibits however, and cellphones are handed over to the guard because photography is not allowed inside, so carry a book and pen if you want to look up things later. The grounds outside the manor (now housing the Mysore University) are also a lovely spot for a stroll, and connect to the nearby kukkarehalli lake
Nature beauty and peaceful place in the campus adorable place
Good place to know cultural history, they dont allow photography.
Best collection of antiques.
Calm and cool 👌 place.
Great collection but needs attention and real investment from administrators.
All the paintings preserved well and neat.
Its a huge museum with numerous pieces of history. Loved it but need some more guides to explain the artifacts and the folk culture
Its awesome place to know about mysurians. but the people working over there are bit rude in behavior
This place has its own mysterious grace... A dream come true for history enthusiasts...
This museum houses significant amount of important articles belonging to the writers of Karnataka but it doesnt describe it well i. e. It is not very friendly to a person not from Karnataka.

Place for ppl who love history.
Inside the university of mysore.. Beautiful place to revisit history
Its an abandoned, lonely victorian era mansion where no one bothers to even change the open timings on Google.
Amazing folklore Museum proud of University of Mysore
