Great Food, Amazing service, and the fact that it was mid week and we got a table straight away was an extra bonus. I have Indian roots so to eat out and actually be impressed by Indian street food is not a common occurrence! Definitely try the food here you wont regret it.
I would 100% recommend coming to this restaurant if you are in the area! The food was 10/10. The service was also amazing, all thanks to our wonderful waiter Islam!! Thank you guys :)
My first visit everything was perfect, food excellent quality and portions. Lamb chops my favourite.Second visit, the butter chicken had less chicken and meat curry portion was significantly smaller and dryer as a dish, this left me leaving the restaurant still unsatisfied and not full. I hope this was a blip on their side as I enjoyed the food and experience. This review is based on my first visit so I hope if I go again that it would be consistent to the first visit. I will post a review update following a third visit.Photos attached of first and second visit, see comparison of meat and chicken curry dishes.3.5 out of 5 based on second review.
Lovely food something very different to the usual Indian cuisine. We visited the Soho branch, unfortunately it was quite small. The service unfortunately was not great. If you are looking for some snacks in between breakfast and lunch best to come here. The portions are quite small , its not somewhere you can have a dedicated meal for lunch or dinner. But a bit pricey for the portion size. However I salute you for being very unique with some of the food and having a twist .
Best daal I have ever had! I ate there three times on a week trip with my family in London; we kept returning because it was just so good! If I come back this is totally the first place I will be eating at.
Experience was great, authentic Indian food with unique style of roomali roti bread and grill dishes are amazingly delicious. with tremendous service from the staff. Delightful experience.
Lovely staff will go again soon ..leicester square nearby
Best Indian you will find in London, if not the world! Such creative dishes and brilliant service.
Ill remember to eat before I come back here next time. A kebab wrap with literally half a kebab in each wrap. Laughable portion.
Saag and roomali roti were delicious!
Incredible food for great prices. The flavour profile is insanely good and food always taste fresh. Atmosphere not the best. In saying that Staff are friendly and quick. Not your usual Indian dishes so if you’re a creature of habit maybe not the best place to dine. If you are true foodie you’ll love it.
Best known for their Roomali(Hanky) roti, this place does some really nice Indian food. Moderately spiced but well-balanced flavours, curries are good compared to other restos (who call themselves as authentic Indian). Food menu options are limited and so are drinks. They do have a small bar at the entrance serving limited option of beers and only 4 wines. Food portions are small so I would recommend ordering one portion per person. They do not have Rice on the menu but they do serve rice. Accept table bookings. Wheel chair accessible. They do have toilet. Very good staff. Accept cards(but the machine wasnt working when we visited). Cash machine just across the road.Do not miss out on the Roomali when you visit. Overall - your eyes, tongue and belly would be well satisfied.
Best Dhal I had so far
This is a gem of a place to come to eat when in London and you want to go somewhere casual but very filling. The chops were divine as was the lamb curry which is very strong and concentrated in flavour. I was quite surprised at how tasty it was! The paneer was also very good and the side dips they give with the chops and paneer are also good. The only dish I wouldnt order again was the fish as its a little dry for me. All in all I will definitely be coming back to eat here! It reminds me of the authentic Pakistani curry houses I eat in in East London but smack bang in the middle of London!
Must visit for Veg indian food
Lovely halal food with excellent service.
Hankies is an Indian restaurant in London named after the traditional roomali (meaning handkerchief) roti. We popped in to try their street food and tapas inspired menu located centrally on Shaftesbury Avenue.Hankies is a small, cosy restaurant with a bar area and the staff were friendly on arrival. We sat at the bar whilst waiting for a table watching the open grill and chef at work. There are a range of Indian inspired drinks to choose from and great classics with a twist. We opted for the spicy lychee with vodka, lychee and green chilli. I was hesitant on seeing chopped up green chillies in my drink but quite enjoyed it. There certainly was a good kick of heat but a little more fruitiness would have been even better. The nimbu pani (ginger syrup, lemon, soda & mint) was fresh and zingy. The cocktail menu is really reasonable at £6.95 each and has some interesting drinks, including a blueberry lassi! We tried the dahi puri (£5, yogurt-y cousin of the popular pani puri). They were crunchy and tangy and really moreish . The bhindi bhel (£5) we tried was also great – crisped puff rice with real bite and sweet chutney. Also top marks for presentation as it arrived in a little bucket! We ordered the pumpkin paneer (£6.50) and the portion was generous with big lovely cheesy blocks in a really rich, bright orange sauce. We mopped up the sauce with an order of huge roomali (hanky) rotis (£1.90). They were thin, light and deceptively massive! We also tried the crab chilli fry (£11) served with a pickled hen’s egg. If you do not like (or fancy) a sauce-y curry dish then go for these dry “from the pan” dishes. My favourite however was definitely the paneer and I would recommend trying that. We ordered raita (£2) to temper the heat and some mango ‘n’ basil chutney which provided a sharp sweetness to the meal.We opted for the kheer and gajrella (both £4.50 each). The kheer, a traditional Indian rice pudding, was a caramel version with mango and cardamom. Whilst the texture of this kheer was totally spot on, I found the caramel and mango addition a little too sweet for my taste buds but worth a try if you like ‘em sugary! The gajrella, a carrot fudge pudding, had a great soft texture with an earthy flavour – perfect. I would suggest ordering a scoop or two of kulfi/ice cream (£4) to go with it for extra yumminess!Hankies is a warm, friendly restaurant and its smaller size and low lighting means it has an intimate feel. It is the kind of place that is ideal for a proper catch up over good food. The tapas, sharing style menu adds to the vibe and it is a perfect excuse to try everyone else’s dishes too! The menu was reasonably priced and the quality of the food on point. If you are looking for a relaxed new Indian restaurant in London to try then pop in!
Best Indian food you can get in central London, hands down!!
Second visit there and the place continues to get better. We ordered the pre theatre set menu which was amazing value at £11 for 2 courses, the main came with dal, salad, raita and Hankies roti on the side. The food was packed full of flavours and delicious! Would definitely go back and would highly recommend it.
A short walk from China Town, Hankies Cafe offers a delicious twist on your traditional Indian. Very attentive customer service with a great smile! The black lentil stew simply melted away with a creamy tomato base - an absolute must try! The Bhindi Bel was also another delicious find; the pomegranates add another layer of texture and sweetness, though there is little bhindi.Though we really enjoyed our experience, we believe Hankies Cafe is not suitable for those looking for a full blown dining experience. The serving sizes are more like sampling/small plates style and ideal for a quick bite if youre in the area!
A great experience, good food and atmosphere whenever i have visited, will definately give the Michelins a run for their money any day.
This is my favourite Indian in London. Literally, such delicious dishes. So under rated! The best one is the one in soho, I’ve visited the other ones and for some reason the food hasn’t been half as good! They took my favourite mushroom curry off the menu... woah that was amazing! Lassi is always soo good too, and love the staff at soho. Marble Arch is too formal..
Chilli Lamb chops - 7/10 Very Expensive for portion size, but very tasty, seasoned well.Tawa Goat - 8.2/10 Very tender, just how I like it. The masala sauce was perfect.Chicken Dhaba - 7.5/10 cant go wrong with this dish, having said that its nothing that stands out.Dhal - 8.5/10, havent come across many black lentils soups, well done as this isnt easy prep.
After finding Hankies on google and TripAdvisor as being number one for the best cheap lunch spots in Soho and surrounding area. Producing Sri Lankan cuisine from the chefs kitchen. I decided that we both havent had it before. It seemed like a great choice.Prices were reasonable and the chef on duty in the day greeted us from the open planned kitchen. He said to us to keep walking to back and we were quickly seated. All the whilst the Chinese new year celebrations were unfolding outside.Service was good and fast and choice of food was great. We chose the lunch bundle which gives you starter, main, side and dessert all in one cute stainless steel deep panned dish. There are a couple to choose from and the Goat is by far the tastiest. The atmosphere is really really nice in here and the tables are split between 2 and 4 person tables with some being able to sit by the chef cooking or at the front of the Cafe.Definitely recommend this restaurant, check it out. Not a long wait due to high volume customers and quick food delivery.
I have never tried Indian food and heard London is the next best place to get it (after India). Trip Advisor lead me to Hankies, and the excellent staff at Hankies did the rest. I asked the host what a first timer should order, and he immediately offered to choose my entire meal. He brought out Bhindi Bhel (a delicious cold sweet crunchy savory salad), Ashoki Da Chicken Masala (a dry curry), a Chilli Lamb Chop, and fresh flat bread. Everything was delicious, and the lamb was very tender and nicely spiced. If all Indian food is this good, then I’m definitely a fan. Regardless, I’m a fan of Hankies. They get top marks in hospitality, excellent service, and delicious food at a reasonable price. Note: you’ll want to book a table if you have more than 2 or 3 in your group. I didn’t book a table but they set me up at the bar counter, where I got to interact with the friendly staff.
Food is just delicious!, every bite. And I dont often savour food and enjoy it slowly but some foods are just too good to eat quickly. Hankies is my go-to place now when meeting friends. With all the crazy busy places nearby this is like a little hidden gem not enough people know about. I can see the chain expanding as much as they want to. Well worth of 5 stars, thank you Hankies!
Delicious food in a casual setting, great prices too!
Excellent service, great customer service and the bonus was the cream tea was fabulous
Excellent Indian small plates and street food served in canteen surroundings. Its quite expensive, given the cramped tables, but come on... youre right in the centre of Londons West End and the food is exciting and delicious. The cocktails are pretty good too. Theres an apparent selection of beers on tap, but each time Ive visited staff have struggled to provide any of the draft beers on the menu.If you prefer smarter surroundings, theres a swanky Hankies just north of Marble Arch.
Went here for my best friend birthday and we had the most amazing time staff are lovely and service is on point the chef performs miracles in the tiniest space imaginable. I cant say enough good things about the food its tasty and imaginative the whole experience was fantastic.I will definitely come back!
Lovely small plates of different Indian food. prefer this to ordering large main or starter. Get to try lots of different thing. Added bonus they accept tastcrd so 241 across menu so extra value for money. definitely worth it and will return.
This restaurant is punching above its weight, and is the best Indian food Ive had in London (and thats saying something!). The staff were fantastic and laid back, the ambiance was great, and the food was incredible. When the chef came to check on us, he asked why we hadnt ordered Londons best lamb dish yet.We did, and it did not disappoint. Well be back. Skip the other place with the lines and come here.
Hankies Cafe is amazing. The facility is very nice and well managed in a nice part of town, and their Hankies Dal dish is one of the best Dal lentils I have ever had. Great, affordable, Indian food especially if youre looking for a little snack.
Havent been here in almost a year, the food has become spicier but its still good. Great chai too. Lovely service by management, all very friendly esp. Diana Baranga she checked in with us throughout our meal, and responded to all our issues promptly. Thank you so much! :)
Surprisingly excellent food that felt almost home cooked. Lamb was very well spiced and other dishes really hit the spot. Service was a little slow but the staff recognized this and knocked a dish off the bill. Amazing group of people serving just as amazing food. Exceeded all expectations. I highly recommend a visit.
I personally thought the food was slightly heavy (for instance, that potato dish need not have been fried!). Else, it does serve to satisfy your craving for an Indian fix.
Good food and decent portions. Shame the server handed us cold mains... After I asked for them to be given to us in 15/20 mind when they arrived with our starters! Might try again
Don’t go in expecting a restaurant feel as this is definitely more of a cafe vibe with close small, cramped tables or bar seating. If you want a restaurant environment you are better off going to their restaurant off Marble Arch.Overall, I much prefer their restaurant offering than this cafe concept as the food portions and prices are the same but the restaurant is much nicer in every way from decor, ambience and service. The food at this cafe is good but they are small tapas style plates. While the food/portion cost might seem a tad expensive, the location justifies the premium you pay. The taste is good across the dishes we had. The food while good is not amazing and there are plenty of other alternatives that serve just as good if not better food. Opt for their restaurant if you can.
You could so easily walk straight past Hankies on Shaftesbury Avenue. But dont! Go in, have some food and leave knowing that youve just a had an amazing culinary experience.Seating is cafe style and they dont take reservations. Our party of 5 arrived at 7:30pm and we were easily seated but by 8:30 it was packed out.The food is of truly exceptional quality. Sensible rather than large portions. Quite a small menu which was great for our party as we were able to try most of the offerings.Go! You wont regret it
Delicious Indian food.. Specially Lamb Chops.. Never had such Lamb Chops in India.. Chef Younus speciality
A small place but fine for a casual meal. Most of the food was very tasty but the small plates a bit too small for my liking. The lamb chops are very pricey for quite thin chops but they do taste good.
Really good food, great location for visiting the West End. Reminiscent of standard Indian fare, but with some artistic flair on some of the items. The lamb chops are great, the tawa lamb is a great deal.As some have noted, the portions may be a little small if youre relying on small bites, but if you order from the specials and get some hankies, that should be more than enough, and I personally found the prices pretty reasonable for table service level fare.
Super cool place, great food, excellent service and perfectly located....highly recommend....!!
As other reviews have mentioned, its quite easy to miss this place as youre wandering down the busy main street. The restaurant itself was small, as were their selection on the menu, but everything tasted fantastic especially the lamb chops. I would gladly return here given the relatively cheap prices compared to other similar establishments in central London.
Tried this recently.Food was NOT great and not tasty. Tables were too small considering all food is bought out almost all together , so its gets cold.Crab is a complete rip off and still partly cold. Most of the food is precooked and heated and all put on the table in one go on a tiny table by waitress(s)Duck was like eating pork scratchings- hard and crispy.Definetly not very indian and wouldn’t recommend if you want good food except for drinks.
This was my first experience with Indian food and it did not disappoint. The menu is set up tapas- style is the only way I can relate it to. The bread is very thin but so so good, especially with the onion and pepper oil mix they give you.I would suggest 2 orders per person and bring friends that like to share because youll want to try it all! Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. From a restaurant next to a hotel, I wasnt expecting such high quality. It is definitely a must. Love it and cant wait to be back!
Probably one of the best Indian I have ever had!. Found the dishes a bit too small but very filling. The alcohol/cocktails were very unique and very tasty. My favourite part about the restaurant was the chilled out vibe and the welcoming staff.
As you enter the cafe the air is filled with the aromas of the spices and the taste buds start to tingle with anticipation. The street food scenario works really well, everyone able to enjoy the flavours of the freshly prepared dishes. We had a stunning evening and were well looked after by the staff, with suggestions on dishes to suit our group. Thanks , would highly recommend Hankies Cafe to those who enjoy authenticity
Tapas style Indian restaurant which will leave you impressed. The food here is great and Im not even the biggest fan of Indian food. Prices are decent and although the portions are a bit small, our tummies were filled as we ordered lots of different dishes and shared. The cafe is small in size so seating large groups would be tricky, otherwise I highly recommend this place.
Firstly, you should try Ryan’s non-alcoholic champagne cocktail. Delicious.2 persons dined on 6 dishes (and of course the roti napkins) and left feeling sated; although we would have carried on ordering if we didn’t have a movie to get to as the tastes were divine.
The best Indian in town. Great location , excellent service and fun ambiance. I would definitely go back soon. A must visit!
The food was decent but I was shocked by how small the portions were for the price I paid. I had read it in a review, but didnt think too much of it until I actually went. I definitely do not recommend this place.
If u love Indian food, you should definitely go to hankies. They have amazing food. Also the atmosphere and the staff are very attentive and friendly. Simply amazing!
Great food, authentic cuisine at sensible prices and good selection of cocktails. Friendly staff, but getting someone to come over to take payment seemed to take forever. Their lunchtime menu is also very good and great value, a hidden gem of a restaurant.
Delicious! highly recommend the curry leaf prawn and of course hankie roti.
Very bland food. Chops would have been good but they were too dry. Puri was good but its so easy to make and impossible to get wrong. The kebab was way too soft. The paneer didnt even taste like paneer. It was too soft and tasted like mature cheese, way too strong. Avoid at all costs.
So much potential but needs more effort and commitment to fresh food
Great food. But was offered discount and then didnt receive. Very weird. Also too many components on lunch menu.
Top quality Indian food. The pre-theatre deal is excellent and is nearly on par with similar Indian meals I have had for 3x the price. Will definitely go again!
Excellent, authentic Indian flavours creatively updated and friendly service. Especially succulent prawns!
Tandoori chicken had flavours throughout.... marinated and cooked to perfection. Try their butter truffle rumali roti!
Its was okay food nothing great portion sizs was small and alot of people going here would complain about that. The decor and service no bad too.
Excellent place for some quality Indian taste. Portions are a bit small but taste is excellent. Indian food with a small twist. Limited variety but very nice.
Very tasty small plates and fantastic service. lamp chops was the best but quite expensive, tastecard gave 50% off which was very good
