DC Dosa is a decent option to try out in the DC Union Market. I cant quite determine the authenticity of their food culturally but I enjoy their vegetable dosas. I found the potato to be quite heavy. Their lassi to be something I can go without. The sauces came with the dosas are quite decent. And the size is quite large portion-wise. If you chose the spicy versions, the heat level can go quite high.
I really wanted to like this place but it’s just not worth the money and not flavorful enough. I was going to give 4 stars because it was okay, but the sweet potatoes were undercooked and crunchy. The dosa was thin and crispy on the outside which i liked. There wasn’t a lot of flavor without the chutneys and even with that it needed more spice.
While this is not strictly authentic, the flavors are so fresh and vibrant since they use such fresh spices. Ther idea is a make your own combination dosa where you pick which lentil batter, the filling and then the chutney. It is totally vegan, but you dont even consider that since its so tasty. The dosa or crepe is made to order and then filled. I really enjoyed the eggplant/sweet potato filling and the chutneys were bursting with flavor. Watch out for the heat though which builds as you eat.
Delicious, huge portion.
I visited this place on my trip to DC.- my primary criteria for a restaurant is food. I ordered dosa with all chutneys and sambar. I found dosa to be bland. I am a dosa fan and think this place is more American style dosa ( not the one which you get in India). Dosa crust was nice and crispy. Sambar was good. Potato filling and chutneys were bland.- this is located inside union market. That is a good hangout spot to try different foods.- prices were a bit high for a take out place.
Large portion, decent prices, awesome ambiance inside Union Market. Fantastic flavor. Chutneys had flavor and heat. Will absolutely be back. Fresh food made to order.
Amazing dosa. Authentic Indian taste and fragrance. Affordable price and quality. The quantity was also appropriate. Only problem was that there was no space to sit.
The customer service was EXCELLENT as this was my first Dosa! It was perfect in taste and options, especially because I am newly vegan! Portions are healthy and enough for 2 servings! I will definitely be back!
I am from Chennai, South India and I can tell you this dosa was as good as my mother and wife make at home. It is rare to find tasty, fresh dosai out of South India but my whole family was very happy to find this place. It is very busy but they have good people working and your order is fresh and very tasty.
Great place for dosa. You pick the shell, filling and sauces. The sauce is spicy but very good.Very large quantities.Definitely get the sambar, as it was very thick and tasty.Chances are you will not be able to finish it, so get the to go box from that start.
Not good. You will get full potato stuffing instead of mashed potato stuffing. Need to pay extra for Sambhar. Better eat somewhere else. They doesn’t have proper sitting so you need to find a space which is nightmare.
Good quality dosas! A nice find for vegetarian/vegans. Really nothing else to add - its simply good.
I made the mistake of going to DC Dosa at Union Market. Dosas are supposed to be light and crispy. My experience has only been Hampton Chutney in NYC (and South Hampton). DC Dosa uses an extremely thick batter with disastrous results. On the bright side Plenty of filling but way too much food given how big it is. The next day I was flying to India. In the Madras area very strict times for dosas so in 12 days we only had dosas twice. Crispy and 2 feet long!
They serve very nice and hygienic food. Their dosa was amazing. Lot of people come here so there is hardly any place to sit.
It was a nightmare for us. Worst dosa I’ve ever seen in my life. Being Indian, I know what dosa is and how would we make !! This place doesn’t have the knowledge of Indian food . This place is terrible . They won’t give free sambhar with dosa. You have to pay extra for sambhar and at last you can’t find place to have your dc dosa. They don’t have any seating arrangement and that sucks. I wouldn’t go to this place ever again
Authentic taste. Little expensive as you need to pay for sambar and chutney is not enough for the dosa. The potatoes could be cooked better. Overall a nice place and worth a try.
Good food, clean & delicious! The only thing is, chatney & sambar are to be bought separately.
A mixture of authentic south Indian dosa varieties, presented with western combinations. Healthy alternatives that are just as flavorful. The dosa fillings and the chutneys have been altered to cater to the tastes of the locale, but still go along with the dosa. The only reason this didnt receive a 5 star review is because it was really hard to find a table to sit.
I like the uttapam better and the chutneys are quite good too. If you are looking for inspired rather than authentic South Indian food.
The best Indian food Ive had in DC AND its vegetarian! The dosa was filling and so good, the price isnt too bad for how much food youre getting too. Lines can get a bit long but that goes for everything in union market. Altogether a great experience.
Visiting DC for the weekend from New Jersey was so happy to stumble upon this little gem!! It is inside the bustling Union Market that offers literally a variety of options for dining. Granted I walked around a few times before I finally settled on this restaurant and it was only because for the price and the amount of food this was absolutely worthwhile! So I ordered the special dosa, the spinach, and garlic spread for my build my own dosa option. The filling I chose two, the eggplant and sweet potatoes with curried potatoes, alongside the mint and mango chutneys and a cup of Sambal. All of this came to about $14 bucks and WOW it was a ton of food. The DOSA with all of the filing had to weigh about 2 lbs! it was so much food. The dosa was airy and delicious and quite flavorful. The fillings were both delicious but definitely next time I plan of diversifying my options so that I dont end up with double starch filings and it was just way too much starch. Next time I would get the cauliflower blend with either of the options I had this past time. So both were honestly super flavorful and delicious and I dont have any regrets just that it was very filling. The mint chutney has a great kick with it and was fantastic. Sambal had a great kick as well and honestly. I just started to mishmash everything and cross dip and WOW it is so good.Im from NJ and there are tons of DOSA options and trust me this is definitely one of the better ones. Definitely recommend and would return!
The food was terrible. It taste like garbage and its very expensive. I will not go there again.
Very tasty dosa. Quite authentic!
Tasty dosas. Cab be better though. Doesnt taste like authentic South Indian spice.
I had high hopes going into the place but it turned out to be a big disappointment. The people were polite but unfortunately they dont have the slightest clue of how to make a dosa. I ended up eating what can be best described as chilla (another form of Indian pancake). The saving grace was the sambhar and chutney.
Delicious dosa and utthapam in generous quantities. Owner has very warm energy and we felt welcomed! Would definitely recommend to friends.
The dosas were more soft than crispy. The fillings and sauces were okay, nothing spectacular. The line can get pretty long here and I wouldnt recommend it if you had to wait.
Another excellent value! Its like a vegan gluten free crepe only better.
The sambar was not the best. The chutneys were okay. The veggies seem to be made in a hurry with extra big chunks of brinjal and potato. Seating was also a big issue in the market.
If you are interested in vegetarian/gluten free meals, this place may be for you. I am a meat eater, but this place was tasty nonetheless.
I love dosa. It used to be extremely hard to find proper dosas but now, in DC, they are served in many of our wards. DC Dosa is especially convenient because the food is made to order and doesnt take long. I prefer the white lentil dosa (that is more traditional) and the curry potatoes. BUT, get a second dosa with nothing in it but get the sambar side order. Then dip your delicious and crispy dosa into the sambar. Youre welcome! Enjoy this southern Indian street food because I grew up on it.
I am not sure why people giving this place anything more than 2/3 star. Make no mistake, ITS NOT A SOUTH INDIAN EATING JOINT, they will prepare something similar to south Indian dishes. This place is in food court where its difficult to find a place.preparation is bed, full of vegetables and full potato. Sambar is distance cousin of real Sambhar dish. only 2 option - dosa and uttapam, no other option available. its quite far from union station.
The dosas are nice and very healthy with a range of fillings. All dosas are gluten free, so really helpful if you are n-glu.
The dosas were awesome. We ordered masala dosa with potato and uthappam with onions. Both were awesome. Good staff as well.Finding seating in the area was the hard part.
Not impressed. The menu sounds very good but fails to deliver. Fairly bland though the chutneys, especially the green one, are quite good. Moreover, the service is slow and they messed up most of the orders of those before me in line. They tore my dosa trying to unstick it from the crepe pan to flip, then again trying to get it onto the plate. When I pointed this out, they shrugged.
Great taste and nice service ! Dont forget the sambar with the dosa!
Fresh ingredients, and made right in front of you, price is right for the amount of food ,they should offer an option for mini dosa for half the price. Great effort, quite authentic taste.
Good food, close to authentic, cheap prices, good items, great locality, market place sitting, plenty parking spots.
Decent dosas. Chutneys & sambar was were good! Not authentic but interesting twist to the dish. They did not serve regular dosa the day we visited although they are dc dosa, which was interesting!
Sambhar was spot on! Dosa was very good, too. They had a surprising variety including, pesarattu and ragi. Definitely recommend.
Very poor version of real dosa . Everything sour . Sambar was pathetic. Please , I would like the Washington Post food critic to eat real dosa and then he can differentiate. For the sambar.. please do something, its horrible. Please all tam brahm avoid this place .. it will disappoint you .
Customer service is awesome and food quality is very good. Its cheap price comparatively.
My wife makes great dosas at home so we never typically eat dosas outside. Just to see what type of dosas DC Dosa does, we tried it out on a beautiful spring day. We tried a Pesarattu and a Plain dosa. To our very pleasant surprise, they were made very well, excellent chutneys and fresh vegetables as fillings. We loved every bite of it. I just wish they open one more in the Bethesday area because this current one is quite far for us. Definitely worth several visits though !
Come here if you want bland, crepes that look like dosa but they arent. If you are south indian you will taste the worst kind in your life. This place is good for people who never ate dosas in their life and want to try it once.
Tasty, big portions and nice spice level. Not quite as good as mums dosa but pretty close.
The dosas were delicious! Loved the chutneys and the sambar. Would definitely want to go there again!
The food is tasteless. I have had better dosa. The samovar is literally water. Beware you can get better dosa for other DC spot. On top of that the owner is nasty. I believe her name is preya and she has no manner how to talk to her customers. I don’t know how they are running this business.
Ordered malabar dosa, got smghg which I never saw in entire malabar
Quick food! Not very authentic Indian food though.
Charging a cup of Sambhar with dosa..? where in the crazy world are u guys from? Its very expensive and poor quality dosa that never an Indian would eat.. Its not a South Indian food!
Its a whole pack of flavors in one joint ..!! I loved it..
Great dosas, taste just like the way my mom makes them!
Some of the best Dosa in the city. Quick service and deliciousness fillings have gone there many times and plan to go many more when I am in the area.
Fusion dishes all though healthy and taste is not authentic
Was super excited to bring friends to try dosas, but they were not crispy like they should have been. The mix was made with lentil instead of river, which is probably why it tasted slightly soggy-er. This definitely seems like its geared more for the general public than people looking for something super authentic. Also the people taking the orders were no help so there was that. In all, the food was mehhh and so was the service, but it was cheap and I shouldnt have had such high hopes.
Dosa was just fine, tamarind and green chutney was a saving grace for a hefty 11 dollar dosa combo. Sambhar was a thick paste of daal with some vegetable thrown inCurry potato filling was bland with no spices and very little salt. If you are a true South Indian cuisine lover, you probably had better dosa than this at much lesser price. Very disappointed.
Dosa (sada) wasnt crispy - more of a soft texture. Green chutney tasted sour. Onion chutney, potato filling and eggplant filling were great. Sambhar was decent too. For a place named DC Dosa they need to have better dosas. And Lassi really shouldnt be $4 - thats really expensive for those small cups.
Worst service ever. Women who were working there very unprofessional, they spent most of the time gossiping rather than making doses and taking order. Dosa was awful, worst dosa ever had. Potatoes were unpeeled and uncooked and not a msala dosa. I have gone to every single Indian restaurant to DC and have been living here for 4 years, but this was the worst experience ever. Not a good Indian food not worth trying.
Not the cheapest option for dosa in the DC area, but nevertheless a flavour-filled and quickly prepared veggie/gluten-free treat! Good addition to round out the food vendor options at Union Market.
Best dosas in DC. Loved the eggplant and sweet potato filling.
I was dubious of this place at first but was truly blown away by the freshness and flavors! Their dosas are all traditional recipes but they have an interesting array of fillings that go inside other than the traditional potatoes (my favorite with fresh curry leaves!). There is an eggplant and sweet potatoes and a mixed vegetables also. All the flavors are unique and delicious. My friend had the Uttapam with the sambar (Mooli - radish!) which was divine. Chutneys were off the chart in favor and heat.Truly well done. Thank you for bringing a bit of fresh South Indian cuisine to the DC area - much needed. Will return again & again& again...
As a native Indian, I can say with quite some authority that these are the most amazing dosas I’ve ever tried, and believe me, I’ve tried a lot! The uttapam dosa is my favorite by far, and you can taste the freshness in the ingredients. The employees are lovely and the owner is so sweet, it’s rare these days to see the owner of a business actually coming to their place and talking to the customers! This is the end all cure for all your dosa cravings - I promise. And if you haven’t tried it before, do! You’re going to find your new favorite place.
No variety, too expensive and no place to sit.
One of the best place in dc to have dosa
DC dosa does a great job of providing something different in the market. I walked around and finally chose it since it looked like a unique and tasty option. I liked the variety they offered as well as the ingredient combination- shout out to the sweet basil lassi- and I loved the chutneys. Its a pretty solid meal and a great value if you stop in for lunch. I had the dosa with the potato filling and liked the fresh cilantro chutney as well as the mango habanero one, all very delicious. The owner Priya was there as well, she makes good recommendations based on your preferences. The dosas are vegan and gluten free as well. Theres lots of seating nearby and once you pay they will bring the food over to your table.
Delicious food with a modern touch to the traditional dish
Ive definitely had much much better.
Nice place very good food love it
Great service and a delicious dosa! Best Ive ever had.
Really good and unique dosas. Very friendly service.
Great food, excellent service.
Great, authentic food in a casual, homey atmosphere
Serve a good vegetarian dish.
I love the health-centric options.
Dosa restaurant on steroid.First, this place is not authentic as advertised. The food is not authentic at all. Only sells 3 flavors dosas and one uttapam with 3-4 filling options. Sambar is like a historic museum item which is totally show case with $4.40 additional charge (90% onions in it). $10 plain vanilla dosa (NOT Authentic) in the US WITHOUT sambar.Wait time: 25 minutes.Fully cooked? --> NO. Its a gamble. Mine was sort of burn but no cooked.Right from cooking equipments, ingredients, menu choice, price, food combinations (WITHOUT sambar) the actual chefs (not typical asians who knows the food DNA and the basics). Its a well staged food gamble that is working for the owner. The website is fancy enough to drive people to the place. Fact is, its all fake.Extreme disappointment on losing $14.40. I wish I had opted for regular cheese pizza instead.
The roasted vegetable dosa was quite delicious.
Just tried a Dosa for the first time and it was delicious! Totally recommend this eatery at Union Market.
Excellent taste nd quality !!
Its really good and very authentic
Simply Delicious
Expensive! Found it unhygienic.
