Indigo is an absolutely amazing place with incredible food, great staff, and an awesome bar. They make wonderful cocktails and have a wide selection of craft beers and ciders to choose from. I had a dry cider I cant remember the name of that was so tasty. Their food is wonderful. We got the paratha. Indigo also has a great location, in the warmer months, sitting outside in the evening and having a drink here is very fun. I loved indigo and I cant wait to go back.
Most probably the most tasty Indian food I ever had. I could taste the complexity in the flavor, with all the spices being balanced and not overpowering one another. We had the butter chicken and the Tikka masala, which came with a side of chickpeas and rice. I couldnt be more happy with the food and their prices are very good. Their outdoor space is excellent for something casual. I would visit again and again, and again.
Classy and delicious Indian food you can get in DMV area. Great ambience and good service. Only negative thing about this restaurant is, they take 9PM reservation and the last order they take is 9PM, so you gotta rush with all the orders once you enter.
Nice vibe, we went in late summer, so weather was great. Ordered vegetarian platter - Palak aloo (vegan) was very tasty. Prices are just below those at a formal sit down restaurant. Good restaurant for a casual meal, especially with the self seating, QR code menus and online ordering.
Most surprised experience. Food is so delicious. Owner is so passionate about their service for his customers. We tried vege platter bangan bharta was authentic kathiyawadi taste and shahi paneer was perfect Punjabi taste. Food price is very reasonable. I will definitely recommend and will go again next time. Must visit.
Best indian food in D.C. And the prices arent bad at all. However, they took forever to take our order for our table. So if youre going to eat there you should still order ahead online from their website, that way you dont waste unnecessary time waiting for your food.
Indian food is misrepresented in most parts of the world. It is not the greasy, oily, spicy and high-fat food that you get in most Indian restaurants outside India. Instead, Indian food has nuance, texture and refined layers of flavour. If that is the kind of food you want to eat, Cafe Indigo is the place to be. The owners are kind, helpful and fun people. Ask them for their recommendations. We went later than usual in the evening and the place was packed. The food tastes like home food made with love. I definitely recommend checking out Cafe Indigo!
Amazing authentic Indian food. It’s is a wonderful family business. Your are always greeted with warm welcome by the husband and the wife cooks the food daily from scratch. You get so much food for your money. This place is one of my favorites places to take friends when they come to visit DC.
The best Indian restaurant in DC! The only place that has *real* spicy food. Cheap, unpretentious, and incredibly delicious.A culinary institution in the city.
Great indian spot! Good atmosphere and great food.
I placed an order online for pick up and received an email with ready for pick time. There was no parking when I pulled up so I called and was told my order wasnt yet ready (I arrived after the time given on their email) and that it would be another 15 mins. So I waited. And then I received a phone call that they had ran out of the item I had ordered and asking whether I wanted a replacement. I said no and to please issue a refund. Sure, I was told. So I went to another restaurant and got the dish I was craving. A few days later I see Indigos charge posted to my credit card. So I email them. No reply. So I call. Person says they dont see my email so while on the phone I resend email, they now see it, and Im promised a refund. Nothing. I had to put in a dispute with my credit card company. Ive spent too much time on this for the amount charged but its not the money, its the lack of morality of keeping something that is not rightfully theirs. Will never order from here again.
Fantastic Indian cuisine!!! Very quick and the staff was helpful with ordering
On July 6th at 1046am I walked up a little earlier than opening time to this establishment, and I think it was the manager that allowed me in without hesitation. She was welcoming and polite. Now let’s talk about the #FOOD #OMG ( lamb curry, veggie samosa ,mango lassi) so tasty 😋. If ever your in the DMV area and want to give #Indigo a try I say 💯 yes!!!!
My favorite place to go either alone or with friends. Amazing family food, vibes and a great local feel. I love the owners too.
The menu is essentially endless with all the different vegetarian and meat options, flat and stuffed breads, and combinations thereof (not to mention appetizers). Everything you would expect at any Indian restaurant plus amazing/interesting options I had never seen before. The food was excellent (pumpkin curry, cauliflower/potato curry, and cheese-stuffed paratha). Everyone I spoke with was charming, sweet, and helpful. Would go back anytime!
Service is slow, food portion is inadequate for its price. I hate how they have no proper sitting areas and the tables are also sticky and not clean.Overall it doesnt give out authentic Indian vibe or taste.
Original taste... Also whats great is you can choose between spicy or nah spicy.
SO. GOOD. Really, Ive not had anything here that didnt taste amazing. The vibe is great (covered outdoor seating with lights, you use a QR code to order, and they bring the food to your table, which also means you can just get up and leave when youre done, but dont forget to clear your own table!)The portions arent huge so you may need to order more than you expect, but if you end up with leftovers you wont be sad ;) The carda-mama (sp?) cocktail is also one of the best cocktails Ive had in a long time, so I highly recommend trying it. The food does take a while to come out, so dont go here starving, haha. But its all worth it and its just nice to sit outside when the weather is good. Its restaurant quality food; dont be fooled by the casual appearance. 5/5 - Well be back often! :)
Indian person weighing in here. The food is just barely okay. This place has some high ratings but the food is nothing special. The flavors were all quite mild or incorrect for the dishes Ive tried.
Great food. Sat outside. Entire family enjoyed their meals. Had coke in glass bottles!
SOLID! Large portions, excellent flavors and quality, great atmosphere outside with lots of outside seating. Having a full bar with drink specials and ethnic beers doesnt hurt. Highly, highly recommended!
Had the platter and some other vegetarian options and thoroughly enjoyed the spread. Will be back. Nice neighborhood spot with outdoor covered seating.
Their food was insanely good. I ate at the place and it had good atmosphere and you order from their menu electronically so very easy to do
Overrated for an Indian restaurant. Shahi paneer tasted like a sweet dish. Mediocre Dal tadka. Overpriced platter. No wonder I didnt find any Indian dining here. Ive tasted better and plentiful food for a decent price.
Great food, great ambiance and excellent customer service. Indian jewel in the Washington DC crown. And not to be missed restaurant with 5 star ambiance, service and food choice. The owners Dinesh and Nidhi Tandon have created a simple and inexpensive eatery which would cater to Indian food fans looking for a Dhaba ( casual roadside restaurant concept) and would remind you of moms hand made cooking.Put this on the top of your favorite eatery list.
The place was packed, but I do not mean that in a bad way. Despite it being near capacity the food was made quickly and was delicious.
Been wanting to eat here for a while and finally had some today. We were not disappointed! Im definitely coming back for more.
This place is hard to miss with the yellow siding and fenced in seating area. The food was okay. Nothing to brag about. (Food truck serving the same food tastes better due to seasoning) The atmosphere is great, outdoor seating available, dishes vary per season and service is great. Water is free! Just wish they step it up on the flavors.
Great food and great customer service. Im personally not into their graffiti-filled decor and normally get the food to go. Very original and authentic sauces.
The best Indian food in D.C.! I take all of my friends from out of town here. Its also a perfect spot for diners looking for a Covid-safe option, as the outdoor patio has ample space. Definitely check out their specials when you go!
My favorite Indian Resturant in DC... the food is very flavorful and light and delicious 😋 I always come and get different variations of the veggie platter and share community style with my family and friends... on this occasion I enjoyed the pumpkin, spicy eggplant, black lentils, and chichpeas with a side of lentil cracker/crunchy bread... we also enjoyed the imported beers and the draft beers
The food tastes like home cook food and is delicious, but it is not like eating in a fancy place. Everything is usually low on spice, but if you give special instructions to make it medium/high spicy, they customize it accordingly. Due to Covid, I opted for a takeout, everything was very well packed. I would have given 5 stars if I would have dined at the place itself. Overall, if you are looking for home cooked Indian food outside India, this is the place to go.
Great food, innovative service, awesome and friendly kitchen staff. Food is a bit pricey for the portion but it is very good.
Enjoyed the vibe when we walked in but does not live up to the hype unfortunately. We had the spicy butter chicken, parathas and saag. As the minority of bad reviews here have said before, the food is bland and service terrible. The saag was marked as “very spicy” and I have no idea why. I did enjoy the parathas though so I’ll give this place 3 stars. The price point is not low either and there are several other restaurants which offer objectively better food in the DC area. I may be back to enjoy the patio over beer and appetizers at best.
Stumbled across this through reviews on a recent trip to DC and couldn’t have been happier! Super casual vibe. Outdoor seating (with heat lamps), plentiful portions of rice and curry sauce with every meal, and plenty of spicy options. Try out the specials too- check the chalkboard. We got a bunch of different entrees and shared them which I recommend. They don’t have typical naan but do have a thinner delicious bread.
I actually ate at that Indigo@Union stall within the Union Market food hall. I found the service to be quick and friendly. The food was hot and tasty. For fast Indian food, I would definitely recommend if. I had chicken masala bowl with smoky eggplant and it delivered with plenty of meat and flavor. I would recommend adding more drink options and something sweet to the menu however.
One of my go to Indian spots in DC. Love the service and ambiance here. Great place to enjoy some authentic Indian dishes while enjoying some awesome cocktails or drinks. You can never pass by here after 5 PM without seeing a packed outside patio. Highly recommend ordering the butter chicken, lamb curry, chicken masala, garlic roti and lamb paratha. Flavors and portion size is generous. All the lamb and chicken dishes here are must order. Prices here are reasonable and everything is cooked fresh. Service is always on point. Even with the crazy crowds you always get your food quickly. They feature an outside bar and plenty of seating for small to large parties. Street and garage parking are within a couple of blocks.
Great food if you love spicy and well prepared Indian food! They do a great job with the lamb. Covered and enclosed patio dining with heaters. Good bar with wine, beer and spirits. I like the Cab with the spicy food. Maybe needs to add a good zinfandel or syrah to the list to compliment the spicy food. I will suggest a couple. Also take out. Enjoy!
Delicious food and cocktails, love the atmosphere and easy street parking
If you love Indian food this is the place to go on DC. Low key atmosphere. Seating is almost exclusively outdoors but covered.
I am editing this review in response to the owner which is attached. I also very seldom write reviews. I only right a review I if it’s a bad experience or a very good one! If I only wanted money back I would have told you give me money back for all of it but I honestly ate whatever I could swallow. The point was I DID NOT TOUCH the chicken. It was NOT half eaten. I would not have brought it to you if it was half eaten. If you pay for something and still leave hungry, how would you feel? And we didn’t want to eat anything else there after the experience so we didn’t accept your gesture of replacing the dish. In the end, the point is not money. The point is your response. A business owner needs to understand that the customer is always right. We are also business owners, and have come across unhappy customers, so I am speaking from a place of experience. When I told you I didn’t like the chicken and showed you that I didn’t eat it you just smirked (kind of laughed). That’s not the response I was expecting from someone in charge. That was the issue. Service is most important when owning a restaurant. Anyways, I’m not interested in keeping this going as if it’s a thread. I have forgotten about it and let it go. Have a blessed Sunday.1st review: Went to this restaurant with my family while visiting DC. This restaurant is a joke. Everything we ordered was bland. We had to ask for salt and eat the food just to quench our hunger. We ordered masala chicken which had no masala! Couldn’t even eat a bite of it. I went to the owner and told him that it did not taste good and showed him that we didn’t eat any of it. The owner did not care at all and he was very arrogant. If you want authentic Indian food...DO NOT go to the restaurant.
I was driving by and I could smell the food so I decided to turn around and grab lunch. So glad I did!
Very tasty Indian food can be had at Indigo. A very casual pick up counter (and sometimes a queue) to place your order to take out or dine in. There is a nice enclosed, dog friendly patio, with heaters now for colder months. You can also get some alcoholic beverages here to pair with your food. One of these days I will remember to bring a marker to leave a note on the wall. Great all around!
I had the butter chicken with chickpeas and rice. Thankfully, I ordered ahead do I didnt have to wait in the 8-9 person long line at noon. The butter sauce was very plain, and the chicken was a bit over-cooked. It I was just too tender and fell apart too easily. The chickpeas were also too soft. for so many good things about this place from a lot of people that trust, so maybe I just came in here on a bad day. Ill be giving them another shot. The employees were very nice, and I was able to sit inside in the air conditioning. I dont see any reusable cutlery or plates or anything, Even for the dine in orders, which is upsetting.
Last week I ordered Lamb Curry with rice and garlic naan! It was great! I have tasted better but the quality and price was fair. The seasoning was spicy but just the right amount! I wouldn’t advise it for kids or adults who arent use to a bit of a kick in their food but I have no complaints. My food was delivered to me so packaging is big for me because I dont like my food to spill all over in the bag. But each container had a lid and they wrapped the containers in foil! So not only food didnt spill but it kept the food warm! Awesome job! It was my first time ordering and will be ordering again!
Absolutely the most amazing Indian food I’ve ever had! As well as the most wonderful staff I’ve met in any restaurant! Definitely my new go to spot for a bite to eat. Highly recommend!
We ordered food worth around $37:50, the food is really bad and tasteless!! I had their food 2 years back and the food was really tasty and authentic!! The whole food we order was tasting sweet instead we said that it should be mild spicy and the portions are too small In terms to the comparisons to the other DC restaurants and the restaurants of Virginia and Maryland.. The portions are extremely small beyond your imagination!!I will never come back to this place I promise!!
Indigo is the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten. They are a family owned and operated shop with speedy service and great outdoor service. They have TONS of vegetarian and vegan options as well as standard meat options that are delicious. The spicy pumpkin side is A+ as is he garlic roti. If you like spice, get the saag chicken! Platters are $11-14 for the most part and tons of food!
Not a typical Indian restaurant in America. First the ambiance and outdoor patio seating is awesime.. the menu is clearly separated into vegan, vegetarian and nonvegeterian gluten free. Food is closer to home cooking and very delicious. We had Chicken tikka Masala, chana masala roti and raita. All were excellent without being too greasy or creamy like other typical restaurants. Garnish of spinach and cilantro was well executed for taste and appeal. Try the pickles and chutney they have at the counter good to see craft beer selection in the beverage fridge. The owner family was also friendly. I recommend this restaurant to Indian and non Indians alike.
Amazing so happy that friends recommends this Indian family owned restaurant. This is a perfect place to grab dinner with friends or take it to go. It has a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. There is only outdoor seating so perfect for the spring/summer. The menu items are priced very reasonably with plates ranging from $10-15. The menu lists which items are spicy so pay attention. The line may look long but it moves quickly. They also serve some beers and sangria. I cannot wait to return and try something new.
Ok so Ive eaten here plenty of times and while they give you ample food, it just does not deliver on the flavor that many other Indian restaurants give. Maybe i keep going just to feed my Indian food itch. Their naan and other sides are ok but Ive had the butter chicken and masala plenty of times and Ive been disappointed every time. Its ok, but not as great as the reviews tend to imply.
Delicious. I enjoy the goat curry. Excellent
Had the spicy curry lamb dish. Excellent, and I appreciated the good service.
The chicken was not cooked properly, couldn’t eat even a bite. We also ordered aloo paratha which was for 5$ and doesn’t come with pickle or curd when we talked to the owner he told us that we should have asked for it. But for first timer how would I know that they offer it if it doesn’t come with the dish when they serve you. Worst Indian food I ever had. STAY AWAY..
Huge variety of delicious Indian dishes for very sensible prices. Many people seem to be taking out, but therere enough of us eating here to keep half a dozen indoor tables ready. (There are many more outdoors, but theyre empty in winter.) I wolfed down a fabulous lamb tikka and tried all the condiments. The curry sauce was rich and flavorful with just enough spice that I noticed it. Staff is friendly, helpful and energetic. A lovely, simple place to eat great food.
Way OVERRATED!I gave them a try and regretted it. Food was not impressive at all (at least compared to the Indian food in New Jersey). It was quite pricey for what it was, and the cashier was bold and unhelpful. You decide for yourself whether this is worth $34! I just wanna ask my liberal peers in DC to relax and review fairly, because this place (even though not bad) is definitely not deserving of its ratings...
Love the food! Amazing customer service, and a great place for outdoor seating.
The food was great! However, the customer service is horrible.
This was my first Indian take-out experience in DC and I have to say Im disappointed, as this restaurant was super highly rated. Im not sure if this is localized to suit American tastes, but I found that the food had very little flavor and was completely unsalted. I ordered the butter chicken, rice with chickpeas, garlic roti and veggie samosas. Butter chicken usually comes in a vibrant red color (as pictured on their Door Dash site) - but this butter chicken was a pale peach at best. The sauce tasted of coconut milk and cardamom - there was no salt and no spice. The roti was green (Ive never seen this before) and bland. The chickpeas were overcooked. The samosas were okay.
The food was delicious, good sized portions, reasonably priced and the staff was friendly.
I’ve tried most of the menu at this point and have recommended to many friends! So many good options it’s hard to choose what to get.
This place is delicious! The serving sizes are good too. The roti is a bit small, but that could be because I like to eat a lot of roti. Definitely try the pumpkin curry. I almost didnt, and I would have missed out on a beautifully spicy sweet dish. The paneer is also cut into nicely sized chunks. The saag paneer is also very good, and has a strong flavor. The spicy butter chicken was exactly as advertised, so if you are looking for a sweet dish, go for the regular. If you want some delicious spice in your life, go for the spicy butter chicken.
Edited in response to owner :The service and food was horrible. No salt and spices in masala chicken . No service at all . Owner and staff are not helpful at all . Hated the place . Don’t come here . If you know Indian food this is not it.Edit :I also clearly remember you since this was one of the very bad experience of service I had, Let me fist start this by clearing this one accusation you made , This was not about “Money “(you made us pay for the food we haven’t even seen or eaten, we even paid the tip before we started, assuming we will have some decent service ). I could care less about the money I spent on one meal; on a trip I made to DC with my Family. the other reviewers you mentioned are from my Family, and we are not internet trolls whose job is to stir up trouble. But this was experienced by every one of the members hence the separate reviews. We were deceived by the reviews when we decided on the place, that is why it was necessary to write an review for people to look at an honest opinion before they make a decision on dining at your establishment.Regarding the mood , we as a group were tired but was in a good mood having visited our nations great capitol it was however, worsened by your food , service and overall attitude. As for the chicken it was not eaten , we only ate the rotis we could not finish the food since it was flavorless so no point in replacing it. You said you been doing this for 9 years, well I feel sorry for the tourist who are not going to come back again had a misfortune to experience your subpar food and service . if a customer comes to your establishment you cannot expect them to know where you put your salt (which was clearly not on table , neither was water or plates or silverware, you call this service ? and for the money you charge to unsuspecting visitors? )I agree that not everyone has same palate but everyone who goes to a restaurant at least expect some level of welcome and service from the staff.I am sorry if you feel that my family is ganging up on you. That was not our intention. You also have a nice day .
I stop in for a beer and potato stuffed flatbread everytime im in DC.
The place was busy for dinner on a Monday evening. We ordered take out Paneer Pakora and veggie Indiroll. They were delicious that evening as well as lunch the next day. I look forward to eating on their patio this spring.
Delicious food. Friendly service. Had to wait but it was worth it. Outdoor seating with heaters to stay warm. Definitely a neighborhood gem!
Wonderful staff. Excellent food.
Home cooked taste of Punjab esp jalandharExcellent hosts are the USP !
The food is good but you pay 15 for only rice and chicken. For 15 i would want a drink to come with my mean or include extra sides.I will be going to Butter chicken 3 on the corner of 2 and f st NE. There you get more for your buck. Its 11 for rice and chicken PLUS 2 sides. BUT this is from a value for your money stand point.
This is a great, simple place for Indian street food and drinks. Its well-lit and easy to find, everything is served in paper, you can get food to go or eat it here.We had samosas and a vegetarian platter. They have quite a few options you can pick for that. We had palak paneer and cauliflower potatos and both were good. The aloo paratha was a bit soft and limp, which isnt too surprising if youre going to take it home. It still tasted good though. The ordering process is kind of weird. You can go inside and order, or you can order from the table. You order drinks and food separately. They hold onto your credit card as if youre running a tab. I was a bit confused, so I actually had a few questions during the evening, but the regulars were ok with it.The outdoor dining area is very pleasant, I hope they keep it around. There are lots of signs and ads from India. Many of these looked like they were from the 50s. Every napkin holder had some tucked in it. The outdoor area itself is lit with tons of little lights hanging from the tent ropes. This wasnt what Id call haute cuisine, and doesnt match the best Indian restaurants in the city. But the pleasant experience of cheap and tasty Indian food reminded me more of my old India trips than those restaurants do. I really enjoyed it, and plan to stop by when Im in the neighborhood.
Good but spicy. however i cant do spicy. all my friends rave about how good it is
Love their food so much
Good value and great selection. High quality ingredients and vegan/vegetarian options are delicious as well as their meet options.
Went there on a Friday I think. The service here is outstanding. The place has a nice atmosphere. Menu is similar to a restaurant in El Paso I liked.
The food was so good, it felt like home for a homesick international. The special pepper chicken was creamy and graciously portioned with protein. The paneer masala was soft and so flavorful. The rotis were soft, served hot and fluffy. The Indy mule was a good revisit to Old Monk, Indias favoured alcohol. I am ready to visit them again, for breakfast this time and hoping to find spicier items too! Thank you
