It’s been my favourite bar for over twenty years, and I’m so glad it’s (barely) changed in that time. Lovely spot either inside by the windows or outside, to have a drink and watch the world go by. New food menu is excellent and the Breton Cider is always a treat. Usual no pints, no mobiles rules and all the better for it.

Fantastic lunch upstairs. Chef kindly gave my table the signature garlic on toast after I mentioned forgetting to order it. Last time I ate here was over 15 years ago when another great team was in charge. Upstairs is a special retreat. I hear downstairs now serves pints!!

This is an absolute must for any culinary enthusiast. A small and perfectly formed restaurant that seats not more than twenty, with world class staff, serving classic French dishes with an occasional modern twist. The wine list is short but very good with some very affordable options. There is none of the stuffiness about it that one usually gets in this sort of place. Undoubtedly one of my favourite French restaurants ever. You must book!

I have always adored The French House in Soho. It’s “The heart of bohemia.” ~ An escape from the bland corporate mainstream chavdom. I feel very comfortable in this neck of the woods. Best times to go to the “French” is from 12 to 3pm IMO, then it starts to get very rocking (busy). You’ll meet all types of colourful characters & a mix of society of all social classes, which gives Soho its rich flavour. The boozer has a lot of history of famous artists/writers/poets as regularsFrancis Bacon being one of them who used to sup champagne at the bar

We ate here last night and it was fantastic.Food was great and just as billed on the menu which was simple and easy to choose from.Take a mad Irish queen, South African / Devonian waitress, and a chatty chef who are all clearly good friends and enjoy delighting customers with fun and banter and the place explodes with fun and laughter.Definitely would recommend.

A slice of France in the middle of Soho, friendly and chatty staff. Didnt eat there this time but defo will next visit.A small pub, but perfectly formed, seating at the bar and on the pavement, great in the summer but suggest securing a table inside early as this place is a popular one, so when the rain returns good luck finding a place to rest that bum!Looking forward to a pint or two there soon!

Soho is a fascinating part of London; a little seedy in places but, refreshingly still full of characterful bars and restaurants. This establishment is an institution for a variety of reasons. The downstairs bar makes you feel like you’re in France - pictures of Charles de Gaulle, Breton cider, eau de vie in various varieties and beers by the half pint - a lovely intimate feel. In fact de Gaulle used it as an office during the Second World War and apparently Dylan Thomas and Francis Bacon both drank here.It has no music nor TV - to encourage conversation - and if you breach the no mobile phones policy you will be abruptly told to go outside. The policy is clearly stated so punters who feel aggrieved at being chastised should be looking at themselves rather than complaining! The French (obviously!) restaurant upstairs is a lunchtime pleasure. Quality ingredients, superbly cooked. Booking is essential.

6/10/20 Lunch. Chef is Neil. Pre Tier 2.The whole experience was magical..the history..walls of portrait photos and art.. my view over the busy street.. gentle service.. laughter over the art of displaying artichoke leaves ..or “who cares”.An artichoke is such a delicious beginning to any meal, as I peel and suck each leaf, placing then neatly on my plate (please enjoy the photos!) and slowly..enjoying the flesh and juices. And then eating into the firmness of the heart which I’ve cut into bite size. Absolutely gorgeous as Neil had cooked it to flavourful perfection. Then masterfully cooked Lamb Navarin with aligot mash potatoes. This was out of this world. The photos show the full deep colours and the flavours were rich and the chunks of lamb just perfect. You may know the restaurant, you may not, whichever, do try to find a way to visit this special restaurant, firstly of course, to enjoy the experience and secondly to give personal valued support to The French House while we live through Covid. This might well be my favourite pub in London, definitely Soho. Bijou of a place where small means cosy, intimate and exciting NOT cramped and smelly like the tube you took to get there. The front windows open fully shutter style which aids with the ambiance but maybe more so with the chance to people watch or to pose in the style of your favourite author. The feeling of history in this long standing pub is obvious and adorns the walls in photos and drawings crafted by the famous and infamous. The original till still sits proud and even though not functioning is still polished and intriguing as the charismatic, fast witted Landlord who managed to make me feel like a gentleman and naughty child all at the same time. Remember if you want immediate kudos when you walk in ask for a half pint.....The French does not serve pints!

Its an idiosyncratic kind of a place, unique and very Soho..more wine than beer, which is only served in half pints, lots of characters , no mobile phones, no laptops and certainly no wi-fi, this is an old fashioned sort of a place, its about conversation and reflection, Strange piece of the 1960s hanging on, with its genteel ambience, it is not for the young really, its a lost world frozen in time.

Staff were very welcoming and the place has a great vibe. Amazing old decor! Stopped for lunch and was very impressed! Had some game bird & some amazing goose fat roasties. The challenge is to eat them all!? The manageress did give us the spare ones to takeaway which was cool! Would have been 5 stars from me if they had some more French beer, some Bier De Garde would have been fantastic! Though they do have a couple of Belgium bottles which are great!

There are 2 highlights here - the no phones rule which all pubs should have, and the picture of Charlie Gimbit from Lovejoy on the wall. The half pint thing everyone complains about is easily sorted - just buy 2 of them. Gets too busy in here sometimes and the beer is nothing to write home about, but all in all the place is ok.

One of the finest meals I’ve had in recent memory. Sitting upstairs for a couple of hours, I hadn’t felt so content in a long time. The decor and staff made me feel so happy and welcome.Neil Borthwick’s kitchen was exceptional too. Everything I had was truly impeccable. The garlic confit and goat curds on toast and the rhubarb crumble completely exceeded my expectations. My father who is quite uneasy about food forbid me from ordering the calves brain and crispy pigs head but I wish to return to sample these.
