Executive Summary:Some good elements and nice food but way below what I would expect from a 2 starred restaurant. We opted for the tasting menu just for contextLet’s start with the good bits. The food was skilfully prepared and used good quality ingredients. (Which isn’t saying much but it’s a good start).Unfortunately, however, it was ultimately underwhelming for such an esteemed restaurant. The flavours were bordering between subtle and bland and many dishes were unbalanced. I know that French food is subtle and precise. But this wasn’t just subtle it was much less. The only real highlight was the cured salmon which was a beautiful and balanced dish. The soufflé was skilful and a nice start to the meal. The John Dory was not too bad but the mushroom cannelloni side was incoherent and overpowering for the subtlety of the Dory. Furthermore the bisque was terribly under seasoned and so pretty much a nothing addition. Completely unbalanced dish. The Amuse Bouche was quite frankly hopeless....almost surprisingly bad.The service was excellent - friendly, attentive, professional - and the ambiance was lovely but unfortunately the food just isn’t even close to what I would expect from such an establishment....or, I hate to be this crass, but for this price point.

I’m not sure how this restaurant has 2 Michelin stars - it was rather disappointing. We had the tasting menu and sadly not a single dish was memorable, some were under-seasoned and generally, it was missing that wow factor. The customer service could also do with some improvement. We sat for 20 minutes with empty glasses but staff were standing in a corner chatting amongst themselves. We requested the sommelier to help us pick a bottle of wine but he was apparently too busy and sent us a vague message via one of the waiters who told us that he didn’t know much about wines.I would not recommend, it’s not “worth the detour”. At this level and price point, Le Gavroche needs to learn from its competitors who in my humble opinion, are well ahead.

Sadly disappointed at this 2 star restaurant. Having been to loads of Michelin star restaurants in London and Paris, our experience in Le Gavroche was so underwhelming. The overall service is prompt and friendly but the food is not at all a Michelin star restaurant standard.Firstly, the Amuse bouche was not fresh, the pastry was hard and tasted slightly off. The presentation was rather boring, with the 3 pieces of pastries looking like they have been pick-uped from a supermarket shelf. The starter of beef tartare was delicious, and the beef from Cumbria was super fresh. This is probably the best dish we had throughout our lunch. The Pork Belly was tasty, but again it was nothing special, it would be a dish I can easily have in a good french bistro. We were looking forward to the chocolate caramel tart with Coffee ice cream but was again sadly disappointed as the shortcrust pastry was stale and I couldn’t eat it, and only ate the chocolate filling. The petite fours were again another boring “supermarket’ selection of caramel , gelatine sweets and shop bought Madeleine’s, not at all like the freshly baked madeleines I have had in other Michelin starred french restaurant. Surely a 2 star restaurant charging £80 for lunch can do better?

Jo
Review №36

The food here was good but the dishes were not mind blowing as has been my experience at some other Michelin starred restaurants at this price point and with similar reputations. Service was good too but missed the mark, we were left waiting in the cold entrance for about 10 mins before we were greeted and then showed inside to an unattended bar for a further wait. Orders were taken promptly and delivered quickly apart from the wine which arrived after amuse bouche but just before first course. Desert courses were uninspiring. Four of us dined together and all agreed we were underwhelmed by the experience - it just failed to meet expectations at that price point. If it was a little local bistro we would have said it was OK but not Le Gavroche. My feeling is that it is constrained by its heritage, its traditional French cuisine I get it. Im glad weve dined here once but there is better, more innovative food out there at much lower price point where you can really enjoy and be wowed by the whole experience.

I really wanted to love this restaurant. Le Gavroche has a great reputation and for years I had been planning to visit. I decided to treat my parents yesterday. When we arrived it was a little like walking into a morgue. There was no ambience as you walk in, and we were greeted by a slightly bemused, distracted older lady but then a cheerful young lady rushed up, apologised for not being there to greet us (it was no issue; wed been waiting about 20 seconds), and she was very informal and relaxed. We were then seated downstairs; and attended to by an austere, excessively formal waiter. We were asked for our orders by said waiter, and then again by a different one who hadnt realised. None of this is a big deal except that it builds a picture of a service that is disjointed and unbalanced; I am not sure whether they are trying to create a very formal experience or a chatty informal one. It felt confused.Unfortunately, our canapes were so indifferent. One tasted reasonably pleasantly of nothing. I think it involved green peas. The other was like eating a lump of Heinz salad cream. I am sure it wasnt but that is precisely what it tasted like. Odd. The sour dough bread - was it freshly made - or reheated? Hard to say. Again, so average. For comparison, Orrery in Marylebone is a consistency formal yet friendly french restaurant which does a delightful aperitif and manages to create a lovely hushed ambience. This was worlds away from that. The starter (Cheese souffle) tasted of oxygen, sprinkled with cheese. I wish I was joking. The main course wasnt terrible. The veal was beautifully cooked, and I understand that the lamb was also good. Its just that everything around it felt very indifferent. I love my vegetables, but I have to say that fortunately,(!), you dont get much with your meat (a tablespoon of veg) so we ate it anyway, enjoying the meat. The pudding I was really looking forward to. Passionfruit souffle! However, it reminded me of the one I make myself - only not as good... And I can assure you, my souffle is nothing more than mediocre. The souffle LOOKS good. But rather than make the whole souffle taste of passion fruit, what the chef has done is create a souffle that tastes of nothing at all, and added some passion fruit juice (with many, many hard little passion fruit seeds) to the top of it. So, youre tasting either nothing or crunching through the hard little seeds.By contrast, at the Oxo Tower restaurant, the Wild Strawberry Souffle was so good I still talk about it years later! Every mouthful was delicious and flavourful and it was also a lot more substantial; you really felt like you had a generous dessert. Balthazar in Piccadilly also does a good souffle. I know my souffles and the Le Gavroche one was truly mediocre. The details matter too. Let me give you an example. My father ordered a glass of beer. Once it got to the point that there were two or three mouthfuls left, a waiter whipped it off the table, and zoomed off so fast he didnt even get a second to protest. I assumed it was just an oversight, however, my mother was also left open mouthed, when her beer had an inch left in it and was snatched from the table so quickly and so stealthily that we didnt realise it had happened until the waiter was at the other side of the room. By contrast, my father had to pour me some water because no waiter noticed that my glass had been empty for 15 minutes or 20 minutes - a waiter saw my father and then helped. But it does show their focus, doesnt it?One nice element is that the chef came to our table to say hello. It felt a little awkward, I dare say a chef wants to be cooking not chatting with random guests, but he did his best and was friendly. A nice gesture, but like everything at this restaurant (the food, the service) it looked good but felt hollow.People complain about the eye-watering price of Le Gavroche. I think this is inevitable with Michelin star restaurants; a restaurant needs to pay for a great chef - and it doesnt matter if the food, service and ambience is great. It WASNT.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday last weekend. The meal and service were wonderful but I must admit my experience was marred by the petit fours served at the end. I had informed staff at the beginning of our visit of my mild nut allergy and it was a shame to find out that one of the pieces did contain nuts. The staff told me after the meal had finished that one of them contained nuts and were apologetic. Thankfully my allergy is mild and I didn’t suffer any severe consequence. For the main course, one of the waiters hid the accompanying sauce for the duck behind the water, which I didn’t realize until I was already half way through the duck. The other customers in the private room were also quite obnoxious and cackled loudly the entire time like they were in a Karaoke bar. The one redeeming quality was getting to chat with the head chef when he did his rounds. The food here was quite forgettable as well. I felt the whole evening a bit of a missed opportunity. The dining rooms atmosphere was a bit flat. In fairness, it was the first Saturday after reopening and everyone is still getting the hang of going out. The food was good without ever being great (with the exception of the Lamb Raviolo which was 10/10) but the real issue was the service. There was one sommelier for the entire restaurant, fair enough having a delay to order something new, but the other waiting staff should be allowed to pour drinks, we were stuck with empty glasses often. All the more frustrating when there was a rather large congregation of staff near the kitchen not doing anything until the kitchen rings for service.Would I go back? Im not sure - the only reason its not a no is the reputation. Perhaps for lunch where the commitment is less, but in the price point they are playing in, their competitors are doing it better by half.

What can you say about Le Gavroche? Took my wife there for her 40th birthday and it was spectacular. The service is formal but very friendly and attentive, they make you feel welcome and like an honoured guest, just what you expect from such an establishment. Not shy with the bread and butter which is always nice...the salty butter and warm bread in itself was delicious haha!We went a la carte instead of the tasting menu and they accommodated my desire to have their famous cheese soufflé, which is usually only on the tasting menu... Oh my gosh! My taste buds were in heaven! I trusted the sommeliers advice and had the 9 year old cherry to go with it...perfection!For main I had the rack of lamb, pink and juicy, cooked to perfection. The chocolate desert was also to die for...So the price? I had allowed at least £300 for both of us, and we had champagne on arrival, a different glass of wine which each course and starter, main and dessert each and it came to £280... Obviously if you go silly with the wine by the bottle it can get ridiculous (the most expensive bottle on the menu was £15k) but for the experience what we paid was very good value. Not an every day meal bit will definitely return!

Possibly one the best nights out in my life. Very subjective I know but everything was excellent. Initially we were worried about being in a place with a dress code and such imposing standards. Those concerns were allayed almost immediately. We were greeted and looked after by four people (including the manager and the sommeliers) who were extremely cordial knowledgeable and simply very nice. Michel Roux Jr dropped by to say hi which was a nice touch. We had the tasting menu with wine pairings which was a great idea. The food and the wine were exceptional. No pictures I am afraid but those on the website are not an exaggeration, the food looks that good and tastes even better. I have to say though, at the cost of repeating myself, that the waiting staff made our night. My special unsung hero mention goes to an Italian waitress who was so nice and enthusiastic about the food she was giving us that she, if possible, enhanced our enjoyment of that. She even took me to the kitchen to say hello and thank a chef who turned out to come from some 20 miles away from where I grew up. Such a memorable night which we hope to repeat soon! 🙂
