Overpriced for foreigners (300Rs vs 24Rs for local). Be ready to remove your shoes and walk on dirty ground (not even tiles) with small stones. No cleaning, no sanitizing. On that dirty ground could get all types of infections. On entrance to main cave standing guard who dont allow anyone in shoes (is it even legal to do it?), so if you want to see the main cave you must remove shoes. I felt disgusted to walk barefoot (no one clean there) and I couldnt see the main cave despite I paid entrance fee.Steps towards cave decorated with garbage, no one wear mask and maintain distance. Many local vendors who sell food and dont even bother to clean hands before touching edible merchandise.Parking its a huge issue.I dont understand why people give high rating to this place because its flooded with garbage and horribly smell.

One of the earliest rock cave in India. approx. 2000 years before here have a monastery. now have a temple of Ekvira Devi / Goddess . A lot of devotees came here . Karla caves is one of the most popular place to visit, if you go to Lonavala. It is worth doing if fit as there are some 200 plus steps up and down. The caves are stunning. The whole temple is carved from the hill side. Worth a visit.

One should avoid visiting such places where locals are themselves throwing plastics here and there and destroying sacred places. One more issue I observed over here is even though there are washrooms allocated on the hill, they are never functional. The shopkeepers try to make it very difficult for the traveler s to cross the way and reach the temple. Try avoiding to purchase plastic water bottles from shops here as it is anyways going to be on the hill side for disposal. Lets not disrespect devi just for tourism.

The Karla Buddha caves are very old archeological sites situated on a hill top. These are just besides the famous ek veera devi temple. If you are planning to visit be ready to climb at least 200 stairs one way. There are 2 sites - one the rooms and second the big meditation hall. The rooms are in a very bad state and should have been maintained better. There is a lot of garbage littered there. The Hall is much better and very beautiful. You need to remove your shoes before you enter. So if you are a cleanliness freak like me dont forget to carry your socks. The stone sculptures are beautiful and worth the climb.

The Great Chaitya in the Karla Caves, MaharashtraMap showing the location of Karla Caves Map showing the location of Karla CavesLocation Karli, India Maharashtra, IndiaGeology BasaltThe Karla Caves, Karli Caves, Karle Caves or Karla Cells, are a complex of ancient Buddhist Indian rock-cut caves at Karli near Lonavala, Maharashtra. The shrines were developed over the period – from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD. The oldest of the cave shrines is believed to date back to 160 BC, having arisen near a major ancient trade route, running eastward from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan. The group at Karla is one of the older and smaller of the many rock-cut Buddhist sites in Maharashtra, but is one of the best-known because of the famous Grand Chaitya (Cave 8), which is the largest and most completely preserved chaitya hall of the period, as well as containing unusual quantities of fine sculpture, much of it on a large scale.[1]Many traders and Satavahana rulers made grants for construction of these caves. Karlis location in Maharashtra places it in a region that marks the division between North India and South India. Buddhists, having become identified with commerce and manufacturing through their early association with traders, tended to locate their monastic establishments in natural geographic formations close to major trade routes so as to provide lodging houses for travelling traders. Today, the cave complex is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.

We had a chance to visit the Buddha caves. Im not sure about the history of these caves. But I was able to see that the place was maintained by Archeological Survey of India. I will be reading more about the caves just to understand more about them. I feel there should have been a strong history behind the creation of these structures. I also feel that this should have been a creation by aliens or something. It doesnt look like human creations. If at all it was human, it should have been the case where people of those times had some extra natural powers to do it. This is just my opinion. We had to purchase tickets for Rs 25 each to enter the Caves. There were two entrance. One was to the main hall or something which had many structures in the wall. The hall was very big and was carved out of a big rock. After that there was another entrance that took us upstairs to a room kind of thing. But from the external looks, it seemed like it was a big Rocky thing that can have multiple routed inside but it was quite small. Or maybe it could have been the case where some of the entry points are not restricted for public visits.Overall it was a great experience. People who are interested in history and archeology will love this place and admire this place.
