One of famous temples in ernamkulam.divine atmosphere. Easily noticeable. Have good parking capacity.xxxxxxxxxxxxxThrikkakara Vamana Temple is located in Ernakulam District of Kerala. Its one among the 108 Divya Deshams.Thrikkakara came from the words Thri kaal ( foot) kara ( land).Bali , the Asura King was the grandson of Prahlada , (a great devotee of Lord Vishnu) and son of Virochana. He was a true follower of Dharma and during his rule there was no difference between Bhulokam and Swarlokam (heaven)Bali was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. The only thing which forbids his Moksha was his ego ( Ahankar.)Balin did 99 Ashwamedha Yagam and was performing the100th at Brighukaccha on the Banks of River Narmadha .Vamana the 5 th Avathar of Lord Vishnu was born as the son of Khashyapa and Adhithi.Vamana approached Bali at the Yagashala requesting for alms . Bali offered the boy anything he wanted . Vamana requested only for 3 feet of land.Balis Guru Shukracharya knew Vamana was the Avathar of Vishnu and advised Bali against giving any alms to Vamana. But Bali was always truthful to his word.Vamana covered the entire universe with two feet and at the request of Bali kept the third one over Balis head.Bali ,the Great Dhanava who offered anything to the Lord could not even grand three feet of land. His ego vanished and Bali became Mahabali .In Kerala the legend of Onam revolves round the story that Bali was pushed down to Pathalam. Every year on Onam day it is believed that Mahabali visits his Prajas ( people) . The people of Kerala wants to make Bali happy by wearing new clothes and having rich food. For 10 days people decorates houses with flowers ( pookklam) to welcome Mahabali. The descriptions of Mahabhaghavatham are at variance with the Kerala story.1) According to Bhagavatham Kerala was created by Parasuram , the 6 th Avathar of Vishnu. So Kerala was unlikely to be there during the time of Bali.2) The 100 th Yaga was conducted by Bali on the banks of Narmada - not in Kerala.3) Lord Vishnu made Bali the Chakravarty ( emperor) of Suthalam ( not pathalam) and offered himself as the guard of his Bhaktha ( devotee) During the Saavarna Manuantharam Bali was promised to become the Indra.Vamana temples celebrates Onam as Vamana jayanthi. The main Vamana Temple in Kerala is at Thrikkakara. It is believed to have consecrated by Kapila Maharshi Theres a pond ( Kapila Theertham) inside the temple. The Siva temple here is older than the Vamana temple. Devotees have to visit the Siva temple first.Onam celebrations in Kerala was started during the reign of Cheraman Perumals.Onam is also celebrated as the harvest festival of Kerala. People of Kerala irrespective of their caste and religion celebrate Onam.

Thrikkakara Temple - located in Gods own country is the place of origin and celebration centre for the most pious festival of Kerala, ONAM. 🐘🌴⛩️I was mesmerized to be at a place which has witnessed the origin of such a fascinated festival. 🏵️I felt the hidden devotee in me, dancing to the tune of peace, relaxation and tranquility. ☮️No wonder, the place was like a rehabilitation center, which healed me with just a sight of it. 😇It gave me calmness to such extend that when I try to express, I get lost and hypnotised with the feeling of being there and fail to express, no matter how hard I try. 🔆Now I wonder, why they call Kerala as Gods own country ! ❤️

Very beautiful temple complex, much like most of the temple complexes in Kerala. I came here on a Monday, after my customary fast for the day. There are plenty of big trees around the complex and there are several deities residing there. I walked around for quite a while and I even sat down under a big tree. As in most Kerala temples, the men have to remove their shirts and must go in bare chested.

Great place to be during Onam. Serves free Onna sadhya. Parking is available on the east side of the temple. There are two temples on this premise. One is dedicated to lord Vishnu and the other to lord Shiva. On the east side of the temple premises one can find the temple pond. The entrance to the front of the temple can be made from the university road. I had visited this temple twice during 2015 & 2018 Onam celebrations. The 2015 celebration was quite lavish while the one in 2018 was held in austere. Some of the devotees here can’t take people of other religions entering the temple premises. Make sure to remove sandals while entering or else some ogling eyes are sure to take you to a trip to netherworld.

As this is one of the ancient temples, the devaswam itself maintained this as major. There is a kalari in the compound where they teach thala vadyam, thakil, kombu, kuzhal and nadaswara. It is one of the 108divya desams. It also has a Shiva linga in its premises, not sure about the history. The temple situated in the heart of Kottayam city is built in the traditional architectural styles of Kerala. The first entrance to the temple includes a small temple for lord Ganapathi which was built recently. After crossing the entrance, we could see the big ground leading to the holy steps of the temple. There is a banyan tree on steps which is considered sacred by the devotees. The Aanakottil and Kodimaram is placed close to the eastern entrance. The Kodimaram built in 1960 is only 42 feet long. To the side of Kodimaram lies the Balikkalpuras. Like that in Guruvayoor temple, one could clearly see the idol of chief deity from the main entrance itself.[3]The whole temple complex occupies about 4 acres (1.6 ha) of land which is rich in many trees and plants. One of the largest Koothambalams in Kerala is in this temple situated in the southeast corner. The temple has shrines for various sub deities in different locations. The southeast entrance consists of the shrines of lord Ayyappa and Ganesha. Naga pratishtas are also close to these shrines. In the northwest section, there is a Chethi (Jungle flame) flower, commonly seen in many Hindu shrines across Kerala. The eastern section includes the shrines of lord Subhramaniya and Durga and the northeast section has the installation of Brahmarakshas which is according to the myths the soul of a priest assassinated inside the temple.

The rituals during Onam in this temple is famous across whole India. The thrikkarappan made out of clay/wood we worship during onam got its name from this temple. Thrikkakkarappan became thrikkarappan - Vamanamoorthi. I love this temple simply for the calm & divine atmosphere surrounding it. There are only a few temples that gives out such a peaceful vibe. Thrikkakara Temple is one of the few temples in India dedicated to Lord Vamana the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is situated in Thrikkakara, 2 kilometers east of Idapally near Cochi. The name Thrikkakkara means the holy place where Lord placed His foot. Thiru-kal-kari later became ThrikkakaraThe legend is closely linked with the story of Mahabali and Lord Vishnus Vamana or Trivikrama incarnation. Mahabali was an efficient and popular Asura king. His kingdom stretched the earth, the patala (the underground), and was threatening the skies. The gods (suras) grew worried of Mahabalis rule and popularity. Vishnu, in his avatar as Vamana, asked Mahabali for a piece of land only three paces wide. Bali, ever the generous king, granted this wish, whereupon Vamana grew to an immense size and covered the heavens with one step and the earth with another. There was no space left for Vamana to measure his third pace. Where is my third foot of space? asked Vamana. Tricked by this deceit, but as one who would never go back on his promises. Mahabali offered his own head for Vamana to place his third step
