Went to this restaurant as we had heard a lot of positive feedback. Heres my experience with them:Good- Staff is excellent. From the time we entered the restaurant till we left, we were attended appropriately. None of them had Indian background but they knew about the food and what to recommend and they were very humble and friendly.- Ambience is great.- Entree are good, specifically mini Vada Pav and Peking Duck Taco (which not Indian at all)Not so good- Everything else. The mains were average. We had ordered ISH butter chicken and one Paneer based curry. Surprisingly both had exactly same gravy.SummaryStaff is amazing. Great ambience. Food is ok, overpriced. Will we go again? No

One of the best in Indian Restaurants in Australia, surely. This restaurant is so authentic in its flavour, respectful to the ingredients and pleasing on the eye. Ish is a cozy fine-dine modern Indian restaurant in Fitzroy. The service was warm, welcoming and fast. However, there are room for some improvements in service like the servers frequently bumped into our tables while taking order/serving.My food recommendations- Grilled Broccoli and Dal Makhani. They are bang for buck and absolutely delicious! Not worth it- Malabar Paratha and I expected a bit more innovative Gulab Jamun Tiramisu.Overall, some outstanding dishes with amazing flavour but some were not upto the mark.

The single star is for the service. The manager and the staff were friendly and nice. 0 stars for the food. The food here lacked authentic Indian flavor and taste.I will start with Dahi puri. My 5 year old daughter can do better Dahi puri than this. A puri with very little potato filling, yogurt and sev and no spices? Really? Next up was egg bonda. It was too oily and below average. These are the most common street food in India and apart from the names, nothing was Indian about it here.Eggplant curry was alright, but it wasnt really worth $26. Naan was okay. Dal makhni - Haldirams ready to eat Dal makhni tastes better than this one. Aged basmati and turmeric rice was bad. It had no fragrance of basmati rice and had coriander seeds in it. I mean, who puts coriander seed in basmati rice? This may be a modern Indian restaurant, but it is too modern for my liking. I dont recommend it.

We visited ISH last night for my husband’s 30th. Unfortunately our booking for 8 people had been lost so there wasn’t room for us, but that wasn’t a problem because the staff opened up the upstairs area for us and we had a private dining room all night! The waitstaff were incredibly attentive and were accommodating of my vegan dietary requirement. At one stage we even had 3 members of staff upstairs looking after us at once, including the sommelier who told us stories of his studies. We had the “Celebration” banquet and there was SO. MUCH. FOOD.We were all saying we have to come back some time just to eat the mains when we’re not so full from delicious food.I highly recommend the Amrit Pinot Noir to accompany your meal - it’s heavier than your average Pinot and the spiciness perfectly complements the food. And if you’re vegan, you won’t be disappointed. My personal highlight was the mushroom “scallops” dish which I think I’ll be dreaming about for a while. To the staff at ISH - thanks so much for making my husband’s birthday a special, memorable experience!

Insta: melbfoodie_markYT: MelbFoodieMark** Check them out for more food reviews in Melbourne!-Just WOW! Its been a while since Ive been this blown away after trying a new restaurant! (Currently doing 50% off through theFork! Dont miss out!!). Ive never tried Indian Fusion cuisine before but I just dont think it can get any better from both service and taste POV :) It was classy and stylish inside and I liked how the staff were very knowledgeable about the menu, knowing all the ingredients in every dish.We tried Sambar Arancini ($16), South Indian Spiced Duck Pâté ($15), Tandoori Lamb Cutlets ($25), and Crusted Spanish Mackerel Ghassi Curry ($28). I have nothing but great things to say about these dishes! Sambar Arancini had these interesting flavour profiles from tomato chutney, tempered coconut, and pearl cous cous - complex but absolutely delicious! The Tandoori Lamb Cutlets were cooked to perfection with nice char and were tender and flavoursome :) The Crusted Spanish Mackeral Ghassi Curry was creamy but retained the thick consistency which went wonderfully with naans. The mackeral was huge and cooked to perfection - crispy outside, juicy inside. Overall, it was savoury with a light spicy kick. But, my absolute favourite was South Indian Spiced Duck Pâté - which came with brussel sprouts and naans (best nans ever - fluffy and chewy w/ garlicy aroma). The Duck Pâté had this rich dense flavour which went extremely well with the naans. You could taste the Indian spices but they were not overwhelming enough to ruin the balance of the dish. It was truly one of the most unique dishes Ive tried in my life - truly exquisite! I will probably visit again just to try it again. Overall, such a pleasant dining experience! I cant wait to visit this place again in the near future :)

A really great restaurant which more people should try out. It was quite quiet for a Tuesday night, only a few tables were busy so we managed to easily get a table. The service was amazing, super friendly staff. The food was very tasty, everything was full of flavour and the portion sizes were pretty good as well. It definitely is slightly more on the pricey side but it was well worth it. We got one starter, one entree and one main plus three sides and were stuffed when we left. Highly recommend checking this place out.

A very tasty, satisfying trip around some familiar/not-so familiar flavours of modern Indian cuisine. We feasted on South Indian Spiced duck pate with brussel sprout mustard achar (pickle), corn and pumpkin pakora (small puffy deep fried dough), tandoori pork belly, butter chicken with black garlic naan, Kerala beef curry, Indian filter coffee pannacotta, and Chai gelato. A very solid menu, including their cocktail menu and selection of Indian single malt whiskies. Overall, a very enjoyable dining experience with a difference!

I appreciate that this might be Modern Indian but the food here completely lacks authentic flavour. We ordered the 4 course banquet with an extra side and all dishes were completely lacking in salt, spice and flavour. I did like the packaging and the heating instructions which was a nice touch but obviously this does not compare to the actual meal. We were very excited for this meal especially as the photos of the food looks amazing. Unfortunately would not revisit or recommend.

Ordered ISH at Home on Saturday 29 August. We cant rate the service and quality of food highly enough. The ordering experience online is great - with the ability to remove/add items from the relevant packages (other restaurants typically only allow you to stick to the standard package). We have dined at the restaurant before and thought wed support them by ordering in for a birthday celebration during lockdown. Food arrived exactly at the specified time, packaged perfectly, generous portion sizes and EVERYTHING was simply perfect (the Kerala Beef fry was a highlight). Well done and Id highly recommend. Well definitely be ordering again.

GeneralWe visited this place for my daughters birthday. After been to a lot of fine dining places & fresh out of Covid lockdown, we had lots of expectations from this place and after all this place is not cheap eats ($75/pp set menu).FoodFood was average overall.Starter - Poppadum with salad and lemon juice on top is recipe for disaster. Ask any Indian how poppadum are meant to be eaten (they should be crispy not soggy).Vada Pav was a consolation as it was delicious.Main Course - Daal Makhani was nothing special. Lamb Rogan Josh was delicious though. Naan were soft. Raita too sweet for our liking.Dessert - Where can I start, Gulab Jamun out of a box cold which we did not eat at all. I can buy a box of cold Gulab Jamuns from supermarket and eat them, I would not come to a restaurant for that kind of food.Drinks - Kids mocktails were OK, nothing special except $15/pop.Overall hyped place. Service is terrible. Daal was served 2 people when we paid full price for 4 adults (though we had 11 year old).Recommendation - Do not waste your money at this place.

Went here a couple of weeks ago and was very underwhelmed by the experience. We were initially enticed by the Instagram because all of the dishes and space itself looked beautiful. We were greeted in a very friendly manner, shown our table, and that was about as good as it got.We had to ask how the menu worked in terms of ordering, it was not explained to us initially. It all sounded quite delicious, so we were very excited to indulge in some authentic modern Indian cuisine. But the only thing was, it lacked any authenticity, nothing really popped with any flavour and we felt all plates needed salt added? One of the waitress’ was very kind to us, and prompt with service. But we didn’t feel very well looked after by the floor manager (I assume) and the less experienced staff.Cauliflower was listed in the menu, we got broccoli. Asahi Dry was a beer on the drinks menu, we got Asahi Dry Black. And a couple of other things along the way. We would’ve been absolutely fine with these modifications had it been communicated. But I think when you’re paying $85 a head you wouldn’t expect they’d try and sneak these things past you.Maybe we just had a bad experience, as this place seems quite recommended. But we won’t be coming back.

Very unhappy with order. Went for the most expensive banquet they had. Ask for a couple of changes to the menu as my partner doesn’t like fish. Which they were very helpful. Once arriving to the restaurant to collect they had given my order to someone else and then they had to resort mine out, told they had given me extras to make up. However when getting home check the box they hadn’t given me the changes nor had they even given some of the items which I was meant to get on in the first place.

I was blown away by ISH. The ambience, the staff, the food, all surpassed my expectations. I went in with a healthy dose of skepticism but was impressed by the authenticity of flavours. I like how they havent gone all out on molecular gastronomy but instead paired Indian cooking with western ingredients to create something different. The aromatic spices in the sauces add a different dimension to the flavour. ISH has set the bar very high in defining modern Indian cuisine in Melbourne.

After our first round of drinks the waitress did not ask if we wanted anything else to drink and we could not order anything as they had taken away the drinks menu.
