Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque is probably most iconic architecture of Istanbul. Many movies and shots of Istanbul always capture this mosque. Amazing and beautiful piece of architecture. This is open to public for free and Muslims can offer their prayers during 5 daily prayer time which happens to the time this place of worship is not open for tourists. The area where Blue Mosque is also has several landmarks within few minutes walk like the famous Bazaar where you can eat and shop, Aya Sofia which was a mosque, church, museum and now a mosque again. There ate also places to eat and walk around in the area. Plan a full day in that area. This is a must stop when you are in Istanbul to take a picture at the least.
We went there on Friday around 2:00 pm. A major portion of site is under renovation. The queue to enter was huge. The experience of praying there was a unique yet soothing. The architecture is mesmerizing. The aura it releases lures you towards it. A beautiful mosque. Remember one needs to cover her head and body while entering. The clothing is temporarily provided for free just outside the entrance.
From the outside, the architecture, colors, art and surrounding gardens are breathtaking. From inside, its currently under maintenance so you wont enjoy it at all as more than 50% of the mosque is closed also the smell inside is quite bad.But you will forget all of those when you just look at its greatness from the outside

Sultanahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) is one of the most magnificent buildings in Turkey. The building is not just mosque, it is also a social life complex. It was built between 1609 and 1617 and is also known as the Blue Mosque because of the blue tiles used to decorate the walls of its interior. The construction was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I. The idea was to build a monument that would not only rival with the magnificent Hagia Sophia, but also surpass it…Light inside the mosque is provided by the more than 200 stained glass windows and several chandeliers. They put ostrich eggs on the chandeliers to repel spiders, hence avoiding cobwebs inside the mosque. The floors are covered with carpets, which are donated by faithful people and are regularly replaced as they get worn out.The Sultanahmet Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul that has six minarets and this provoked hostility at the time. Such a display was previously only preserved for the Prophet’s mosque in Mecca and the sultan was criticized for thinking a bit too highly of himself.According to the most obvious urban legend, this whole issue was the result of a misunderstanding between the sultan and his architect. The sultan supposedly had asked to have altın minare (minarets in gold) and the architect understood altı minare (which means six minarets). A second, less plausible legend is that the architect decided that gold minarets were too expensive and therefore decided to make six of them.Whatever the true story behind the six minarets is, the sultan overcame the problem by paying for a seventh minaret at the mosque in Mecca.
Sultan Ahmet Is grand architectural gift to his capital was this beautiful mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque today. Built between 1609 and 1616, the mosque caused a furore throughout the Muslim world when it was finished, as it had six minarets (the same number as the Great Mosque of Mecca). A seventh minaret was eventually gifted to Mecca to stem the dissent. The mosque gets its nickname from its interior decoration of tens of thousands of Iznik tiles. The entire spatial and color effect of the interior makes the mosque one of the finest achievements of Ottoman architecture. A great sightseeing joy of a trip to Istanbul is wandering amid the gardens sandwiched between the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sofya to experience their dueling domes in twin glory. Come at dusk for extra ambience, as the call to prayer echoes out from the Blue Mosques minaret.Directly behind the Blue Mosque is the Arasta Bazaar; a great place for a shopping stop as the handicraft shops here sell high-quality souvenirs. Even if youre not interested in a browse, head here to see the Great Palace Mosaic Museum, which is tucked between the Arasta Bazaar and the mosque. This small museum displays the 250-square-meter fragment of mosaic pavement that was unearthed in the 1950s here. Excellent information panels explain the mosaic floors recovery and subsequent rescue.
The Blue Mosque also known as Sultan Ahmet Mosque is very famous in Turkey. Actually the Turks people never call this mosque as Blue Mosque. This name called as Blue Mosque because Western visitor that seen the colour of mosque are mostly in blue tiles from Iznik (Nicaea) covering the mosque. Eventhough the colour of the mosque not only blue, but also green, white and other, but the mosque now famous with the name of Blue Mosque, than Sultan Ahmet Mosque. This mosque was built in 1609-1617 and through a lot reconstructions until now. The decorations and the interior of this mosque are very unique. When you step inside the mosque, you will find a large carpet covering the floor. There are also a lot of Arabic Caligraphic on the wall and taken from Quran verses. You will also see the floral pattern that said its represented earth. When you inside the mosque, you will feel calm and relax, not because this is the mosque, but because the interiors, decorations and the colours make the athmosphere of the mosque make you comfortable. There are a lot of stuff land space like mihrab (Niche) for the space of Imam or pray leader. Also minber (pulpit) its for deliver the sermon when pray Jumah every friday, also when pray in the Feast of Ramadhan, and Feast of Sacrifice. Also there is space for muadzin, the man to do ritual prayer or called Adzan. Also there are a lot of other stuff. When you see the exterior of this mosque from outside, you will be fascinating because very pretty and unique. This Blue Mosque located in Sultan Ahmet area, near to Fatih. You can take tramway because thats the most near to this location. When you take tramway, just need to stop at Sultan Ahmet station. Around this mosque also there are a lot of food street you can came or drop by only for eat if you also want to take a rest for a while. This place very recommanded for you if you visit Istanbul
Awesome and historic construction. Very heavy pillars and walls. Beautiful design. Peaceful place. What glory days
Very beautiful architecture of Blue mosque in Istanbul Turkey ,one should visit once in lifetime
I really want to give 5 stars as its a holy and sacred place but tbh as mosques 80% is hidden/ closed or what so ever you call it, i didnt enjoy there . This mosque is famous because of its blue tilez with extraordinary architecture but i couldnt see anything as the whole roof/ceiling was covered for restoration and is believed to open after 4 years. But still ! It has a holy ambiance with good security measures. Will visit again when itll be fully restored and reopened.Yes i recommend!!
It pains me to have to give the disclaimer that I didn’t actually enter the Blue Mosque; however, its position in the Sultanahmet District is as clear as day. It’s very, very hard to miss. For that reason, I was able to enjoy the exterior views while I was wandering through the gardens and grounds of nearby sites. Next visit to Istanbul, I will prioritize entering and experiencing the mosque at its full glory—but meanwhile, I encourage my readers to do so too!Recommended very much.
I get used to visit the blue mosque every time I visit Istanbul. These days the mosque is under restoration. You can enjoy seeing it is wonderful architecture without paying an entrance fee. As you know the mosque is a worship place so you have to wear a sutable clothes, which is not short and not tight. And head covers for women.
The area is part of the Othmani history, great Holly Place, unfortunately when we visited was still under renovations.
Awesome place!I loved it much
I hope to come to Istanbul again, I liked it very much.
The blue mosque is one of the famous mosque in Istanbul beautiful architecture admission free but now under the restoration cannot see inside ceiling
Work im progres
Renovations under processSimple mosque
Beautiful religious place to see! You can feel all the history around you. Only thing that disappointed me was it is under construction so we couldn’t see the beautiful atmosphere as seen in the photos and the blue color inside that it is known for but thats nobody’s fault, sometimes renovation is needed, we will come back in the future to see it again when renovations are done!
Unfortunately during our last visit, it was under renovation. There was nothing to see . I wouldn’t recommend visiting the mosque during renovation.
Beautiful masjid, but unfortunately at the time I was there the maintenance was going on and the whole ceiling was covered so we couldnt see dome, or even pillars. The construction was mentioned will go on till end of 2021. So I hope when revisit it in future I can see without any cover. It was built by Sultan Ahmed I (1603-1617) .The mosque, which has a large outer courtyard within a wide perimeter wall, was raised from the outer courtyard floor. The windows providing illumination in the building are handled in six rows. Except for the mihrab wall, the first two rows of windows from the bottom have rectangular openings and jambs. The third row of windows and the fourth row of windows in the exedra have pointed arches, while the fifth row of windows in the semi-domes and the sixth row of windows in the skirt of the main dome have round arched openings. In the building, which has six minarets built with kufeki stone, four of the minarets are placed at the corners of the sanctuary and two of them are placed at the corner of the courtyard, resulting in a very harmonious appearance. The minarets have a total of sixteen balconies.More than 21.000 tiles were used in this mosque, where the development of tiles from the centers of Iznik and Kütahya can be observed together, and more than fifty different compositions are encountered. These tiles of Iznik and Kütahya workshops, which are rich in both color and composition, are dated to the XVII century.Tomb. The mausoleum, located to the east of Darülkurrâ, was started to be built after the death of Ahmed I and in 1028 (1619) II. It was completed by Osman. There are thirty-six coffins in the tomb. Here, besides Ahmed I, his wife Mahpeyker Kösem Sultan, II. Osman and IV. Murad and various members of the dynasty family are buried.Arasta and Shops. The arasta in the south of the mosque was completed in 1026 (1617). the shops lined up in two rows on Arasta street were continued in a single row at both ends of the street, which was known to have 200 shops in the past, there are about eighty shops today.Dispensers. Although it is known that there were eight fountains in the complex, only five of them have reached our time.Other Structures. To the south of the mosque, under the outer courtyard wall, there are spaces lined up side by side and connected to each other. It is highly probable that these spaces, which have a row of cut limestone and three rows of brick walls, were built as water reservoirs. The Byzantine ruin in the direction of Arasta was also handled and evaluated, and it was turned into a structure (probably gasilhâne) with a water-related function by being associated with water reservoirs.
Very nice place to walk around , historical, parks , restaurants and coffee shops , you need to wear decent to enter the mosque
Memorable experience of praying Zuhr in Blue mosque
In the name of God, the Great and the Merciful, a very beautiful mosque that is unique , a couple from Denmark 🇩🇰😊✈️🚢🚕🚂

A beautiful mosque, I recommend the visit! On the outside the architecture is much more beautiful, but on the inside it has a whole history
A lot of refurbishments are taking place, but you still see the grandeur of this beautiful historic mosque. As you enter bags are provided for shoes and entry is easy. You can also visit the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet and his honourable family in a separate building during the day.
I was at the Blue Mosque some days ago,the best mosque i’ve ever seen, also you should see hagia sophia. You need to visit Istanbul:)
Soo much History to relish and enjoy. If you can, get a guide. Makes a world of difference.
Just beautiful. Looks nice at night👍🏻
Well what can I say about this beautiful Sultan Ahmet mosque also known as the blue mosque. We offered our afternoon prayer here. The interior was beautiful and we were blown away with the amazing architecture. Great experience for us as a family.
Amazing place to be at. You can visit AyaSofya mosque too, its just 2 mins walk from the blue mosque. A lot of restoration work is under process at the moment. However, still notably to visit. You can also plan a whole day in this area, theres topkapi palace nearby too and then the grand bazaar area too. Also, all of it is accessible through blue line metro which starts from kabatas and ends at bagcilar. One the most touristy lines.
Something that cannot be expressed in words. An amazing muslim architect during the time of Ottomen empire and it truely takes you back to old times. Blessed to witness that and its amazing an amazing feeling to see it. I have taken pictures from inside and outside also one picture from the window of Hagia sophia. I visited the place back in 2016 and still memories are so fresh. would definetly love to go back again.I have taken some new pictures during my visit in 2021 July and inside view has been changed a lot due to renovation and decoration.
İstanbul was my first as a tourist destination 2018after my princess left it was a good trip but full of sorrow.i missed her a lot on each step, and i believe she is in paradise and enjoying her life. soon In Sha Allah i will meet her.The Blue Mosque and Sophia Museum was looking beautiful at morning & night time. specially for me i offered Friday Prayer in Blue Mosque.

Beautiful mosque part of it was under construction so I didnt see the whole place
The most famous and beautiful mosque in the world which is very old and ancient I will tell all the travelers to see it once in a lifetime
Blue Mosque is an amazing monument at Sultanahmet Square, it is called Sultanahmet cami as well. There is no blue color or sign from the outside to call it the blue mosque, the only reason it called it a blue mosque is because of the blue tiles covering the interior walls of the mosque.
Calm atmosphere, try Sultanahmet kofteçesi they have delicious food, nice walks could be done there between paszaars and old Mosques
I have always wanted to visit Sultan Ahmad Mosque, my goodness this place is astonishing! This Mosque is a historic mosque. It remains an active mosque, while also interesting many of tourist visitors. One of the best architectural Mosque buildings in the world. This mosque is also called the Blue Mosque due to the blue colour of the uncountable ceramic tiles that make the interior really stunning. Please be warned Women have to cover their head and hands, if you forget to bring a cover with you there’s a cabin at entrance of the mosque that provides head covers and skirts free of charge!Plastic bags provided free of charge so you can carry your shoes with you. Seating by the large windows inside the main hall on either side, the breeze is just amazing! words can’t describe it! Highly recommended.
This place is literally heaven, i recommend everyone to go there
Blue mosque is under refurbishment when the visited and pray every Subuh whilst stay in Turkey for 6 days, two times I prayed in Ayasofia
Dont go now. Its under renovation and will take 3 years to complete. Super crowded and all pillars covered by cardboard papers. Spend time at Sokollu pasha mosque instead. I just went in and came out.
Oh this mosque area is stunning, i love the atmosphere, the architecture, the history. this is one of beautiful mosque ive ever seen.before you come into the mosque area, there are police who standby there and check your bag.there are also local shop who sell corn, simit for 4 TL (outside area you only have to pay 2-3 TL), history bookshop and also souvenir store.
Sultanahmet Mosque was built between 1609 and 1617 by the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed on the historical peninsula in Istanbul, by the architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa.
One of the most astonishing landmarks of the great city of Istanbul. Beautiful piece of architecture that will leave you speechless.
Known as SULTAN AHMET MOSQUE OR BLUE MOSQUE,Outside of mosque/Majid is a nice peice of architecture but inside is full of history, VERY PLEASANT EXPERIENCE OF HISTORICAL PLACES,1st place I VISITED IN ISTANBUL. Some Nice eating places aswell, some shopkeeper of outside bazaar are day light robbers/looters & kept chasing for visitors from other countries.
The Blue Mosque in Turkey is one oldest mosque that you can find. It is also known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque that was built during Ottoman Empire. Its a peaceful and holy symbolic place.
Renovation is going on nowadays so u wont b able to observe alot but the magnitude of the masjid triggers a pleasant feeling. Alhumdulillah witnessed Friday sermon in its courtyard
Nothing to see inside it is under major restoration. Stand in line to see nothing!!! Small area to basically allow you say you were inside. You cannot see any tiling and domes are totally covered with scaffolding....take pics from outside and carry on
Love the amazing nicely constructed building. Huge mosque opposite the Hagia Sophia.
By far the most visited attraction in Istanbul, Turkey. Some parts including the Dome and some of the minarets are under Reconstruction recently.
Wonderful building and very beautiful but in restore process. In September 2021 only can enter in a very very small part and even on that place the wall and ceiling are cover. My advise, wait until the end of the work. Go to hajasofia in front.
Nothing to see at the moment. Come in a couple of years when repair is finished. Everything is hidden and closed with walls and covers to repair in the outdoors and indoor. Dont waste your time
Along with the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque dominates the skyline of the breathtaking city of Istanbul. It’s towering minarets can make anyone awe at the significance of this great site. The Blue Mosque is known as blue through its lavish blue encrusted marble found in the interior. Currently a religious site, people from all religions are invited to visit the mosque just kindly asked to not wonder around the prayer area. Nevertheless, one can still enjoy.
Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii), also known as the Blue Mosque, is an Ottoman-era mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey. A functioning mosque, it also attracts large numbers of tourist visitors. It was constructed between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains Ahmeds tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the mosque’s interior walls, and at night the mosque is bathed in blue as lights frame the mosque’s five main domes, six minarets and eight secondary domes. It sits next to the Hagia Sophia, the principal mosque of Istanbul until the Blue Mosques construction and another popular tourist site. ❤️
Nice mosque, but closed for reconstruction.
One of my favourite cities. 4th visit & counting
The most famous mosque in Istanbul is Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque.Sultan Ahmed Mosque with 6 minarets and several domes, along with Hagia Sophia is considered as one of the most important and beautiful monuments in Istanbul and Turkey. Hagia Sophia is just a few minutes walk from Sultan Ahmed Mosque. This mosque known as blue mosque because the interior is filled with blue tiles. Of course, most of the blue tiles of this mosque are currently out of reach of visitors and are located on the upper floors of the mosque. The mihrab of the mosque is most beautiful interior elements of this mosque.
Sadly under long term restoration important for such an iconic building the mosque is still open, but there are very few glimpses inside to give an impression of the magnificence of this building. Detailed information in English on whats going on but no timescale on completion. I did not que to go in went at a quiet time would I que for a long time to see the inside probably not.
Too bad it was only open for prayer when we got there but admiring it outside is still okay. There are random touts outside waiting and will probably talk to you.
Place was so calm and relaxing, bt I couldnt see it properly since maintenance work was going on
There is nothing to see. Outside and inside are all covered up for works. There are few amazing photos of the mosque shown. The courtyard is not open either. Really nothing much to visit. July 2021
Magnificent mosque!! This mosque is a must-see for any tourist. One of the finest architectural mosque buildings in the world. Unfortunately it was under heavy construction and renovation that blocked a lot of the beautiful walls. It’s also called the Blue Mosque due to the blue color of the countless ceramic tiles that make the interior really gorgeous. Women have to cover their head and hands, if you didn’t bring a cover with you there’s a cabin at the entrance of the mosque that provides head covers and skirts free of charge! Shoes have to be taken off too, plastic bags are also provided for free so you can carry your shoes with you. It’s very charming... words can’t describe it!
Just amazing and no words can express the beauty of the mosque
Lovely place to visit. Most areas under renovation so didnt see much besides prayers area.
Great, peaceful location and amazing scenery to visit.Lot of people from all around the world are here in Istanbul, Turkey. You can visit the Blue mosque 🕌 and Hagia Sophia.
Blue mosque is just spectacular.
Such a beautiful place and buzz. As soon as its prayer time, visitors cant come in but when prayer is over, the place is open to the public. Such amazing scenery, the vibe is full of energy. Love to go back again.
I meanVery nice building
Be mindful of the prayer services and the dressing rules.
The Blue Mosque, one of the most fascinating parts of the Istanbul skyline, is also one of the most important symbols of Istanbul. What makes it so fascinating is not only its imposing appearance. The Blue Mosque, as the first mosque built with 6 minarets, has many features that distinguish it from the others. In this article, we will share with you the history of the Blue Mosque, which is admired by all who visit Istanbul. Here is the important history of the eye of Istanbul!
The first time we visited a Mosque. Really an incredible structure.
The Ottoman-era friday Masjid located next to the Hagia Sophia. Basically, it is Sultan Ahmed Masjid (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii), which is known as the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, Turkey. The premises of the Masjid also contains Sultan Ahmeds tomb, a madrasah and a hospice. Hand-painted blue tiles adorn the interior walls and at night the building is bathed in blue lights.
Very beautiful for out and inside. Could spend half a day just relaxing here during good weather. Must go tourist spot and enjoy a Turkish coffee outdoors. There is a dress code to go inside and you have to take off your shoes. A lot of reconstruction work going on too. They also provide free WiFi access.
Such a massive piece of art!
Right now the place is being renovated and you really cannot see anything inside (ceiling is covered with scaffoldings). There should be a clear information regarding this, as you can loose some time in queues..I will definitely give it 5 start once they finish renovating. For now it is a waste of your time.
I was in the Blue Mosque in September 21, and they have mayor restaurations, currently. They arebopen for tourists but all you can see is sheet metal and steel fences. I guess it is only relevant if you plan to go for a prayer but if you are interested in the art or architecture then dont stand in line, look it up online.
The interior is currently under restoration, the dome is completely covered and we weren’t able to see any part of it. The garden outside is nice, but nothing to see inside at the moment.Official visiting hours are posted outside the mosque, information on the website or on Google map is not up to date.
Historical architecture, beautiful surrounding. Free to access the building no entry fee. There is a dress code in place, no revealing clothes allowed if youre planning to enter the mosque, However, there is a booth inside the compound that gives out costumes to cover yourself which is also free. Its always full of tourists taking pictures and picnicking on the mosque grounds, very beautiful at nights too.I should say its very safe always police at presence, we never came across any problems while we were there. Its one of those must see places.
Incredibly peaceful place. Has a nice atmosphere and people around these parts are really kind. The history behind the mosques are fascinating. Its a must visit place regardless of religion and belief.
Beautiful, breathtaking and and feeling to behold!
It was beautiful place,hospitable people
