Tomi was a very decent find. We were on holiday in Christchurch and decided to try this place and it did not disappoint.Plenty of parking out back which is always pleasant, the ambiance inside is actually very Japan like, feels authentic.The food itself is damn amazing, everything we got tasted excellent, salmon Nigiri was special, I’ve never seen it prepared like this with such a long tail.And topping it off, service is excellent, always with a smile and the staff were very helpful. Can’t go wrong if you want some tasty Japanese food.

I’ve become a bit of a regular to Tomi’s. It’s really great Japanese and consistently good every visit.It’s tucked away in Edgeware Village and rather unassuming but it really is a hidden gem and quite a bustling little suburban eatery. There’s daily blackboard specials and a very good menu. Can definitely recommend Tomi. Lunch and dinners both great but pays to book online as it’s become very popular.

Absolutely delicious duck and salmon, outstanding sushi and karaaage chicken. The pottery they use is so beautiful and the service is great.

Booked reservations for 7pm. Arrived a little early and the staff were very friendly, they seated us straight away.Ordered our food and drinks and within 5mins our drinks arrived, along with the entree. Didn’t have to wait to long for the mains. Food was filling and the light dessert of ice cream and creme brûlée was a nice way to end the meal.I would recommend the place if you are wanting good food, a place that isn’t too busy, and a good atmosphere.

Tonight was my best ever experience at Tomi. Went with my sister (cause we love the place) and we both agreed it was the best food weve ever had there. The sashimi was out of this world, had mackerel & trumpeter which was a first. Also the carpaccio blew my mind.I tried testing google translate when we paid to say a compliment including some expletives but turned out it was quite sexual. Be warned! And as always: service was fast, friendly and the food is excellent.

Lunch was good. We ordered the lunch set came with rice, miso soup, salad and pickles. Really enjoyed the food except the pickles.

Good restaurant, good Japanese food, Japanese owned. We really enjoyed it. They let us order ahead and they have high chair for our baby. There are some carpark outside the restaurant. Everything is fine. Only thing though, that waiting staff who serves our table with piercing and ponytail with undercut can do better with proper restaurant training.

This place is so good if you want a stunning meal great service cant go past Tomi

Sashimi dish here was super fresh. The fish reminded me of a nz summer like no other. The authentic chefs were a great to watch also !

I read a Stuff review suggesting that Tomi was one of the best Japanese restaurants in Christchurch. My expectations were set a high bar. Sadly, Tomi did not meet the bar that was set with delivering competent fare which was uninspiring in flavour. Gyosa were deep fried rather than steamed and pan fried. The agedashi tofu was smaller lumps of tofu than typically done and was not as flavourful as it could be. Our other dishes were good, but not great, which summed up our overall experience.

Great authentic Japanese restaurant, very delicious tempura. They do also bento during the lunch time. I always miss Japan after a great meal at this place. Highly recommended

Delicious Japanese bento/rice meal sets at reasonable price. About $13 for teriyaki chicken don / oyako don, $16 for a meal set (with miso soup and salad), and $25 for a more deluxe bento (e.g. Sashimi bento / grilled steak bento). Staff is very friendly. Would recommended others to try.

I went today at lunch time , we were not sure if they will serve us food cause was 13.55 and they close at 14.00. The waiter by the door told us that yes, we can had lunch so we ordered .... grouper Tempura, Tuna Sashimi, Miso soup and Takoyaki. The service was excellent and the food was just Amazing !!! It’s a very cozy restaurant with modern Japanese decorations and the staff is really friendly.If you like Japanese food either to eat in the restaurant or Takeaway ...... Tomi is the place.Thanks so much for the service and go the extra mile so we could had lunch.

“Fresh sushi and great kushikatsu”Great, tasty, plentiful and very enjoyable is how I describe Tomi Japanese Restaurant, the sushi is so fresh and the kushikatsu took me back to Osaka, I love eating Japanese and thoroughly recommend this restaurant. Everything is done extremely well, very typical of Japanese.

Excellent menu. I judge a Japanese restaurant on its miso soup this was excellent. Gyoza were nice. Mains were delicious. Reasonable prices.

The food was wonderful and yummy, but the service was really slack and slow. Waited a long time just to get a menu and the place wasnt even full at lunchtime. The staff just ignore you until theyre ready to serve you. There was no welcome like you usually get in a Japanese restaurant.Finally, the waiter cleaned the table, spraying a liquid cleaner on it while we were already seated. Would have preferred that he just spray the cloth away from us and wipe down the table.The fried chicken was crunchy but rather dry. Had to request some sauce to make it go down easier. The salmon and sushi were terrific, though.

This is my new regular Japanese restaurant. Food was excellent quality, we has sashimi platter and beef tataki. Sake was excellent. The waiters were lovely and we were never having to call them over. Will be returning here!

Delicious food which was nicely presented. Excellent service too. For me it didnt get a 5 because it offered no Vegan options which meant my son didnt attend the family milestone dinner.

Had a pretty high expectation for this place as the quality looked really good. unfortunately i was quite disappointed. perhaps it was good enough for the western standard but definitely far away from a real Japanese cuisine standard.

Super average food. Customer service is bad too. Feel like they are robots with really insincere smiles and conversation. The timing for delivering courses was way off too.

Nice sashimi plate.Prawn tempura was thumbs up.Beef dish (I cant recall its name) was good.Only i didnt like was the cooked rice..Ah..also they didnt have udong noodles.Other than that the best Japanese restaurant for me so far.

All lockdown, the only place I dreamed of going to was tomi with my girlfriend, tonight was the first time I have been out and it reached our expectations and more, we dont even have to read the menu to know what we want, it is consistently good and was great to see it busy , already looking forward to next time

Very very good. Love the octopus balls and matcha ice cream. And the Kakuni. And the sirloin. And the salmon sashimi. Basically everything. 👍

Yeah nah worst japanese restaurant Ive experienced, karage chicken entree was as dry as an old boot and only had some mayonnaise to accompany it, the pork belly almost unbelievably was a meat and three veg (steamed broccoli, carrots and cabbage) serving hardly very japanese, more like mas home cooking only not as tasty

Its ver Japanese and good spacing between table so you feel there is room for you to have meal quietly alone. The music play during lunch time was low and not disturbing you while eating. Its an awesome experience for me.

Authentic Japanese, sushi was delicious. Tempura could have been more crispy though :-)

Worst meal Ive had in Christchurch since returning 3 years ago. Miniscule-sized meal in a small container that you had to cook yourself for 8 minutes. Laughable really - 3 carrot slices, 1 broccoli floret and a teensie piece of meat. Poor quality, poor service, bland, overpriced meals in relation to sizing, $8 corkage charge, cramped seating and very noisy. One of our guests couldnt eat the food she was given. After a long and embarrassing complaint with refusals twice, she stood her ground and the meal cost was finally taken off the bill. The 6 of us will never return. We left Tomis and went to Strawberry Fare for lovely desserts and cheeseboard. I think Tomis is dining out (no pun intended) on the fact that John Keys and the Japanese Consular have eaten there!!!!!

Booked this restaurant for my partner birthday celebration. The shasimi were really fresh, sadly the beef for sukiyaki was overcooked, everything else was good. Will come back again

We just finished our dinner at Tomi tonight. I will rate 5 stars for the food, but the guy who served our table tonight really made us unhappy. I don’t know his name. He wears an earring and has yellow hair tied. He obviously has discrimination on Chinese customers. When he served our table, he seemed so inpatient and unhappy. However, when he severed other tables, he always had a big smile on his face and he was patient to other customers. It’s so disappointing that a good restaurant has such good food has such an incompetent employee.

We had the sashimi Platte, seaweed salad and one of the menu. Everything was delicious! Reasonable price and friendly stuff.

Excelent quality. Not many variety but very tasty. Any complaints about the service. Great. We be back for sure. Spent $45 for 2 people. We are 2 dishes is sashimi, one of them with rice. And dumpling and 1 coke. Not so expensive. The fish was fresh!
