I wanted to try this place for a while and I finally did recently. Well... What to say... You must come over here that you already had dinner... The dishes are pretty tiny and there is no way they can make you full. The service is very nice, we liked it, but if you consider the fact we went we had already eaten and ended up spending $60 each and being still hungry, maybe the place is a bit overpriced $$$. The food is pretty good, especially considering they have a lot of fish and this is New Zealand, but with the amount of food they serve you per dish and the price, I cannot really give over 3 star.
This is the most delicious and cost-effective one Ive been to. The restaurant has a wide choice of dishes. The restaurant is almost full, so it is recommended to book a table in advance.
Delicious food, attentive service. We will be back
Had a fabulous dinner at kinji - the diamond clams in sake broth were amazing - delicate, perfectly seasoned, nourishing. All other dishes were of a very high quality and perfectly presented - the plum pickle - an awesome upgrade on the pink pickled ginger - fabulous service and beautiful food. thank you and will be back.
Not great for vegetarians! I ordered a few things from the Tapas menu as the main menu was pretty limited for me. Wasnt a huge fan. However friends I was with who werent veggie all thought their meals were great!
Having traveled around the South Island so many times and tried so many Japanese food around here, Kinji is definitely a restaurant that will resonate with the Japs.We ordered the Lotus Roots Chips, Sesame Seaweed Salad, Assorted Nigiri Sushi, K.F.C, Deep Fried Crumbed Pork, and the Beef Sukiyaki Hot Pot.Lotus Roots Chips and Salad were alright, nothing really to shout home about. I kinda expected the Lotus Roots Chips to have more flavouring but it was just literal fried lotus roots with salt. The salad was pretty decent.K.F.C and the fried pork were extremely good though! If I had to choose one Id take K.F.C over the pork any day.The sushi were good, although the tamago wasnt very fresh. Unagi and salmon were okay.Beef sukiyaki was the best, but we all wished the beef slices were a little thicker. The staff here were the star of the show. They were all extremely polite and accommodating. We didnt know this place would be needing a booking, but they tried to accommodate us and we were very thankful for that! Good going guys!If you ever want to visit, call to book ahead!
Friendly and hospitable with authentic Japanese flavours and a good range of sakes which you can experience in flights of three if you choose. Orion lager on tap which a refreshing and crisp foil to the excellent food.
Really enjoyed the food and service here, must go again - there are so many things to try!
Best Japanese we’ve had in a long time. Great sake, sushi, sashimi and more. Randomly stopped by and could not be happier.
Authentic Japanese restaurant. Fantastic bento boxes and sushi. Love this place.
Place nice and cozyCleanFood tastes from another world so goodServiceVery friendly stuff.Prices very good.Definitely come back
Highly recommend! We had a larger booking, but the service was still fast and our servers were beyond lovely! The fish was some of the freshest we have ever had and presented so beautifully. Thank you to the team at Kinji for the great experience!
Ridiculous deliciousnessSushi sashimi combo is a winnerFriendly staff
Nice and tidy restaurant. Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurant in Christchurch. Love the wagyu beef. Highly recommended
Amazing food and service. Classic dishes and regional delicacies, very fresh sashimi.
Amazing authentic Japanese restaurant, super friendly staff who greets you in Japanese when you enter the door, that was really cool. We had rice cake, lamb, wagyu beef and blue cod with shitake tempura. All the dishes were perfect! I would skip the lotus chips. Great choice of sake, try the plum wine for desert - yum! Festival of flavors and Japanese experience. The place is packed, so better make an online reservation, the manager Miyu is very responsive and extremely nice.
I love this restaurant so much. I go there whenever Im down in Christchurch and would rate it as one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country.

Amazing food, fantastic service, the restaurant is a little noisy ( bad acoustics) but you must try it, definitely book recommendations octopus balls, tempura chicken and coffee jelly with icecream beautiful people who go out of their way to ensure you have a great experience.
Best Japanese food i ever had....absolutely amazing.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and staff
The food was amazing, the service was impeccable and they even gave my mother a complimentary dessert for her birthday! These guys are awesome!!!
Most authentic Japanese cuisine.I have lost count how many times I have visited Kinji, but everytime the service is incredible and the staff are very friendly. Most importantly however, the food is fresh and cooked to perfection.

Without a doubt the best sit down Japanese restaurant in Christchurch.
Hands down the best japanese restaurant in town!
Yum! Fresh food friendly staff :)
Loved our first visit to Kinji.Menu is extensive and has many great dishes that are authentic Japanese style.Service is outstanding with waiting staff always on the lookout to help. Will definitely be back.Food was brilliant.Highly recommended.
Delicious bento dinner box! The staff are very nice.
Teppan squid was delicious, large serving with generous helping of bean sprouts. King prawns were excellent too. Matcha tiramisu one of the best I’ve had. 5 🌟 We are supposed to be on our third family holiday in Japan at the moment, so a night out at Kinji’s is as close as it gets for authentic Japanese dining in NZ.
Absolutely love this place. The food was all outstanding. Lovely staff, great service.
This is just tasty! And better than Japanese restaurants in the centre of Christchurch, with a more reasonable price.
The best japanese food i had in christrhuch ! though a bit pricey..
Great food, busy little restaurant with such friendly staff. Highly recommend!
Great atmos...Great food. Great service ...10/10 would recommend!
Just stunning food, awesome sake
Taste is good and the place is fantastic. Great place for friends to go together. It would be better if their menu could provide photo of each dish. That will help a lot.
Everything was so fresh.
Best nigiri sushi you can find in New Zealand , environment ok
Delicious food and excellent service. We ordered a number of mains as well as some starters and would recommend doing it this way. The dishes came out one by one, allowing us all to try them, and the staff were very accommodating, allowing us to add another few dishes to our order with minimal delays. The food was outstanding, served hot and quickly. We will be back again for sure.
A great experience! Fresh and delicious Japanese food! Recommended the Wasabi Octopus, the Spider rolls and the Green Tea Tiramisu!
The food here was fabulous. My partner and I were very surprised at the quality of food at this restaurant. Service was great and you can tell that the chefs put a lot of care and love into their food. The beef carpaccio was amazing and would definitely recommend. Overall it was a delightful experience and would come here again.
My dream place to eat. I love every single thing about this place. Ive been to Japan many times and this is a Japanese run restaurant in Christchurch that truly offers you a Japanese experience. Stunning variety and some thing for everyone. Also byo but excellent wine and sake list.
Kinji is the best restaurant in Christchurch, Japanese or otherwise, in my opinion.Consistently impeccable in terms of food and service.Ive dined there at least a dozen times now and Ive never once failed to be incredibly impressed. As the plates arrive its immediately apparent that a great deal of love and care has gone into the presentation and flavor of each and every dish. The wait staff are effusive in their care of you, but not overly so.The prices are very reasonable given the extremely high quality of the experience.Youll never be disappointed choosing Kinji.
I have been here two times. Here is Japanese restaurant. You can eat many kind of Japanese food and everything delicious. However here is little bit expensive. But all the shop assistants are very polite and can receive a service worthy of this price.
The absolute best restaurant in Christchurch. The food is just amazing. Is in my top five restaurants in the world.
If you want authentic Japanese food, just like a real izakaya, this is the place to go in Christchurch! Best to BOOK! The food is so fresh and really tasty and the price is incredible value for money. You know its a great place when the locals LOVE it.
First class
Excellent sushi and good value.
Wow! The sashimi and the nigri combo was excellent and fresh. The staff was extra friendly and helpful. The owner chef even came out to chat with us at the end. Highly recommended and we will definitely return if we visit Christchurch again. Definitely a gem in Christchurch.
Kinji Restaurant was the best dinning experience we had in the whole of New Zealand the staff were polite, friendly and very helpful the sea food was delicious and well prepared we also had fresh bluff oysters two days into the new seasonIf you are in Christchurch dont miss this dinning experience
Ive been to Kinji a number of times and it is one of those places thay never really changes, however, it doesnt need to as it is consistently a great place to go. All the staff greet you when you enter (bookings are essential here!) so you feel very welcome. It is quite small so you are never waiting for service as someone is always on hand. The food and sake selection is amazing and it is definitely the kind of place where you want to order a few different things so that you can try it all. I highly recommend this place!
Most authentic Japanese food we have tasted.
Ive been to Kinji twice now and its wonderful. The servers are delightful and very polite and knowledgeable. The food is beautiful and such good value for money. The restaurant itself feels very authentic and really does feel like youve been transported to Japan. Check out Kinji sometime, I am sure you will not be disappointed!
Went to Kinji last night for my grandsons birthday and the food was beautiful, excellent service, reasonable prices. They overheard us refer to Grandsons birthday and organised a little candle and birthday greeting to accompany his dessert. Thanks for a lovely evening.
We went there on our last day in Christchurch. We werent expecting much of a small Japanese restaurant near our Airbnb but it blew us away. The staff were lovely, the food was delicious with interesting flavours and the sashimi was fresh. I would recommend the seafood and porcini soup but I imagine everything on this menu is a delight.
Extremely delicious food, very filling! It was our first time experiencing teppanyaki staff was very friendly and attentive their very skilled chef displayed his skills in this fine art. Definitely recommend there’s something for everyone here.
