Dodda Basavana Gudi (the Nandhi Temple) is situated in Bull Temple Road, Basavanagudi, area of South Bengaluru, part of the largest city of the Indian state of Karnataka. The Hindu temple is inside a park called Bugle Rock. The bull referred to is a sacred Hindu demi-god, known as Nandi; Nandi is a close devotee and attendant of Shiva. Dodda Basavana Gudi is said to be the biggest temple to Nandi in the world. The stone monolith idol of Nandi is continually covered with new layers of butter, benne in the local language of Kannada. There is an idol of the elephant-headed Hindu deity Ganesha close by.Every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Hindu month of Karthika Maasa a groundnut fair is held in the temple premises and groundnut is offered to the deity. This fair is known as Kadalekaayi Parishe in local tongue. Groundnut sellers and devotees throng the place during Kadalekaayi Parishe.Basavana Gudi is a regular place of visit for tourists and is covered by most of the tour operators including the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.Nandi Temple is exclusively for the worship of the sacred bull (Basava in Kannada) in Hinduism, known as Nandi, Lord Shivas vahana. The word nandi means joyful in Sanskrit. The temple was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda under the Vijayanagara empire in the Vijayanagara architectural style, he also founded the city of Bengaluru.[1][2] The temple is named after the large granite Nandi monolith placed on a plinth in the temple shrine (garbhagriha) which has become blackened from years of being rubbed with charcoal and oil.[3] The temple is a small one, consisting only of the shrine fronted by a porch in the Vijayanagara style. The current tower (vimana) over the shrine was constructed in the early 20th century and is adorned with Saivite figures and motifs.[4]It is said to house one of the largest Nandi murthis in the world. The height of the murthi is approximately 15 ft (4.6 m) and it is approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) long.[5]The Bugle Rock garden is behind the Dodda Ganesha temple and adjacent to the Bull temple. The garden gets its name from a bugle call made on top of a very large rock formation to alert the nearby dwellers. It is densely covered with trees and one can usually see and hear a number of bats perched on the trees. There is a water tank with motifs of famous people from Karnataka.Nandi, meaning ‘joy’ in Sanskrit, is the sacred bull according to Hindu beliefs. Though the Nandi statue appears to be black in color, it was not really the case when it was built. The idol was originally grey in color. But as devotees continuously applied charcoal and oil to the statue, it blackened over the years.According to a myth, the iron plate on the bull’s head has been placed there by Lord Shiva to stop the idol from growing. An inscription at the temple states that the Vrishabhavathi River flowing through Western part of Bengaluru has its origins from a spring located beneath the Nandi statue. The temple is estimated to have been built in the year 1537 by a ruler named Kempe Gowda, who is famous as the founder of Karnataka’s capital city, Bengaluru. Though much of the temple has been unchanged throughout the centuries, the present ‘Vimana’ that towers over the shrine was built during the early 20th century. The architecture of the temple is heavily influenced by the Vijayanagara style, prevalent during the 1500’s. The idol of Nandi is carved from a single stone of granite, and features a Shivalingam behind it. Meanwhile, the Vimana is adorned by Shaiva motifs.

Nandi temple, popularly known as “Dodda Basavana Gudi” by the locals is one of the heritage temples of Bangalore. Located inside a park known as Bugle Rock, this temple was built to appease a wild bull who used to destroy the peanuts cultivated in this region. The entire structure of the bull has been carved out with single granite rock, and the statue is 6.5 meters long and 4.5 meters high. The statue was originally grey, but over time it has turned to black due to the regular application of butter and coconut oil by the devotees. The temple also houses God Surya and Chandra’s idols on their chariots.

One of the oldest, traditional places in Bangalore. A beautiful, serene place. All around the temple the roads are full of traffic with heavy noises. But here, inside its so peaceful and quiet. A lot of hugely grown old trees could be seen. Nandeeshwara is very grand sitting on the top of hillock overseeing everything around. Because of His presence the locality is called Basavana Gudi, and the road is Bull Temple road.A must visit place not just once, but frequently.

Kadlekai Parishe is one of the biggest festivals in Bangalore, a groundnut fair which brings together several hundreds of farmers from across South India. The entire street around Bull Temple in Basavanagudi wears a festive look, with vendors selling everything from balloons, toys and clothes to food, crockery and vegetables. There are tonnes of groundnuts on offer too, of course, of different types. There is a sea of people on the road for the fair, and stringent police checks. The Parishe begins, officially, on the last Monday of the Hindu month of Karthika, which happens to fall today. It lasts for the next 3 days. However, people already begin visiting and shopping the weekend before the fair officially opens.Swipe to see some pictures from the Kadlekai Parishe. This had led to the originally grey statue to turn black. On the premises of the Bull Temple, there is also a beautiful temple of Ganesh, the beloved son of Lord Shiva. An interesting fact about this temple is that the statue of Lord Ganesh is made entirely of butter! It takes about 110 kilos of butter to make this artistic statue, and a new statue is made every four years. What is really astonishing and noteworthy is that in the four-year tenure of each butter sculpture, the butter doesnt melt or change shape even once. The butter that makes the statue of the deity is then distributed to the devotees as prasad.
