Beautiful grounds and building. Checking in and out was straightforward. The staff were helpful and welcoming on arrival. Breakfast was very good, a sort of two course menu system. We used the spa facilities which had opened the week we stayed, as restrictions lifted, which we thought we were fortunate to have been able to use! The spa staff were equally helpful and welcoming. Our room was comfortable and furnished well. The highlight was the air conditioning, during the very hot weather we were lucky to have that week too, which meant we were very comfortable and slept well. The parking was free to guests and we could leave the car on the last day if we still wanted to explore Bath. The hotel is a short walk away from the centre but it is on a hill so a taxi on the way back may be more suited to some.

This is not a 5 star luxury hotel my room had a lovely comfy bed but the bathroom was not nice it was old with things broken the room was a mix of new and shabby furniture I payed nearly £500 for one night and it wasn’t worth it the breakfast was ok but my sausages came out half cooked I sent them back and asked for well done and was annoyed as they came back the same which was rude I then went to used the spa at 9am and was asked to leave the outside pool as they wanted to clean it this should be done before it opens or closes and 2 of the saunas weren’t working this hotel is more like a 4 star I would not recommend this hotel if your looking for an expensive luxurious hotel do not book here as you will be disappointed. Most of the staff are very nice and helpful but when I checked out the women on reception was talking on the phone while she checked me out of the hotel which I found rude overall an unpleasant stay at this hotel

Overall really enjoyed the stay, staff were welcoming and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.Our evening meal was amazing my steak was perfect and peppercorn sauce was something else, was so nice I had it every night of our stay.Breakfast was also lovely plenty of choice and the full cooked English breakfast was really tasty and a good portion size.Hotel grounds an building are beautiful, rooms are a little dated but on par with hotels of this age and style. We stayed in a garden view room with fantastic views of the grounds and BathThe spa was great and relaxing, only issue was the outdoor pool could do with a bit of updating and maintenance. We will definitely return

Great location, impressive landscaping and period features. Spacious public rooms and bedrooms. A pretty place.I had one big problem which I did not expect for a 5* hotel ; my room had not been cleaned completely (blood stained towel in the bath, broken glass in the bathroom and bed linen not changed from previous guest). The hotel manager changed rooms of course but it was an unwanted hassle at the end of a long day and I ended up in a noisier room nearer the roadside.Food and service was good.

Where do I start... arrived after 3.5 hour journey, rooms was still not ready for us and we was just left sat around in reception.Room tired, mouldy grout and damp stains throughout. Bed sheets ripped, 5* with a poor b&b standard. Dinner started with old stake bread which we returned, steak that was cold not (rested) dry chips disaster. Told restaurant was full but whole evening no more than 6 tables of the 30 dressed were used. Kept awake all evening by kids and barking dogs. Then breakfast topped it off valie savers produce cooked badly the whole stay was a joke from start to finish and I had to apologise to my wife for our anniversary. Yes the building is lovely but as far as quality if staff and food and drink wow. The women I spoke too at reception was very sympathetic and helpful. Was also the same person that noticed wed been sat waiting on arrival and helped get us in our rooms. Or wed be still sat there.

I cannot deny the beauty of the building and the stunning grounds it sits within which are very well maintained. Reception area is nicely decorated and has a good ambiance. The ladies on reception were lovely and check in was very easy too! We struggled to understand the 5* status due to being in a very tired room, having a blocked shower cubicle and the condition of the spa facilities (particularly the outdoor pool) and costing over £900 for the two of us to stop here for two nites. We were rather disappointed with the hot stone massage which set us back £150.00 as the lady had quite a scratchy ring and also kept knocking the stones on our back. It wasn’t quite the luxurious or relaxing anniversary we had planned considering the expense.

Relaxed, efficient, friendly service from staff in the spa and the restaurant. We were there on the first day of opening and very much enjoyed our spa day. The treatments were excellent. We had afternoon tea overlooking the fountain and wisteria, with a very good choice of teas, sandwiches, cakes and scones. It would have been good if they had checked our choices of sandwiches as one of us is vegetarian, but nonetheless there was plenty of delicious food. We finished our day in the sauna and outdoor pool. The pool was delightfully warm but some of the tiling was a bit tired; we thought it would have been nice if that had been renovated during lockdown. All in all, an excellent day.

We stayed here after our wedding at the beginning of august. The grounds are stunning and the staff are very helpful but we got in after a very long wedding day to a blocked sink that was full of water and the main room light not working. The receptionist was very helpful and unlocked the sink for us, but it wasnt as romantic a start to married life as wed pictured. One of the plug sockets in the room was also faulty, so our phones didnt charge. The hotel was VERY busy on the Monday morning for breakfast. The food was incredible but it did take over half an hour to get any coffee! It really is a beautiful place and the staff are excellent, but there were just a few set backs that were unfortunate.

Always you see 3 people to sit in their chairs, not stand up to greet the guests , they only make with bad attitude remarks about pools and about their policy which its simple the worst policy ever I see and heard in my traveling history. If at the end you dont want kids, turn the Hotels to Adults Only. . . But parents to have the child(s) with that you have NO right to forbidden to go to Gym or the hours of pool to use 8 am its simply reason not to go. Weekends usually guests are relaxing they want first to take the breakfast and then to enjoy the pools and spa facilities. Also to book for weekend and not have for your weekend guests availability for massage then why you call the Hotel Bath Spa????The worst experience ever and then you start to notice that the Hotel is old, rooms with problems, elevator with problem and many many others little things that coming to notice from the ugly and mean behavior from Spa dpt.Which at then ends for that you pay it is extremely much for what you get back. So the Value for Money is zero....Sorry guys but adap you need action plan for Spa and that ridiculous policy.Aaaa and Dunday the Hotel was full and the Spa team has not predicted to have towels and they gave to us and rest of guests two and three body and face towels....Really??? for £400 per night???? Too bad there isn’t a 0-star option. I bought an afternoon tea voucher just before the start of the first COVID lockdown and could not find the right time to redeem it. I called and emailed so many times, and finally, when I received the solution, it was only a 6-month extension. The voucher was originally available for 6 months, and another 6-month extension meant that I only had a year. This hotel was shut during the COVID lockdown, so how could you expect me to redeem my voucher before the expiry date? My voucher date was when COVID was at its peak time in the UK, and I did not feel safe eating outside at that time. I tried calling the hotel reception and administration so many times that no one was there to answer the call, and all my emails have sunk to the bottom of the sea also. What poor customer communication! I was very excited about this afternoon tea when I bought this voucher as it looked really appealing on the website. However, the experience I had didn’t meet my expectation for a 5-star hotel. I also bought a dinner voucher from another 5-star hotel around the same time before COVID. And as soon as COVID lockdown started, I received an email from the hotel offering me a one-year voucher extension. Which one am I going to re-visit in the future? I think the answer is obvious. I am beginning to questioning the prestige of this so-called ‘5-star’ title.

We visited the hotel for our anniversairy and had a wonderful time. The staff were friendly, professional, courteous and helpful. One slight disappointment, there were moments during food service where the wait was a little long. On one evening, we waited 25 minutes for a drink in the colonnade bar.Another slight let down was the staff at reception not knowing information about the city sightseeing bus. We were wrongly told that they run very frequently (around every 15-20mins) and we were directed down the road to a normal bus stop, when actually we needed to go up the road to the sightseeing bus stop and the buses only ran every hour from there. The hotel was maintained at a very high standard, and the room cleaning was excellent. The hotel gardens were magical, and a joy to walk around. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the hotel leisure facilities and enjoyed our additional spa treatments. The outdoor hydrotherapy pool was our favourite. On one of the days we indulged in the hotels afternoon tea, which was lovely.A suggestion that we have, would be a change in the background music playing in the resturant/bar. We feel that this music was not appropriate for the ambience of the dining area. We would suggest something along the lines of piano jazz music, as we feel the music disrupted the sophisticated vibe of the resturant.Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel, and should we visit Bath again, we shall definitely be returning.

Arrived for check in early so went to the lounge for a drink and maybe lunch, saw no member of staff and eventually after about twenty minutes took a taxi into town for nice lunch in Browns restaurant.Disappointing hotel restaurant experience, started with warm bottle of sparkling water and had to ask twice for ice, starter came without the whole grain mustard and again had to ask, but was given strong English mustard. We then waited and waited for our mains( over an hour) and noticed that people who came long after us had finished their mains. After asking we were given some kind of explanation that didnt really make any sense about room service orders causing a rush on the kitchen. Our Lobster was very small (I have had larger tiger prawns) way overpriced at £45 plus they had run out of Frites, so it was served with some way overcooked double fried chunky chips, our hake dish was tasty but at best could hardly be described as even lukewarm. Restaurant staff and the manager were very friendly and did not charge for the hake or one desert so we did appreciate that gesture.Room dated but OK, nice big comfy bed, rubbish small TV that had very dark picture but no control to make it any brighter, this was probably down to the remote not working properly, half the functions didnt work and it would not turn on and off with the remote so I had to get out of bed to finally turn it off!!Bathroom tired with noisy slow plumbing also rust on shower pole and shower/toilet hand rails ( I think this is considered a disabled room as the sink was very low to the ground) also bizarrely the bath hot water came from the cold tap and the cold from the hot!!! Could really do with a refurbishment.Overall a disappointing stay and certainly not 5 star, saved by the pleasant staff, but for me I would not stay again...

Poor unfriendly welcome on checkin after a 200 mile drive. Staying for 2 nights in one of the 3 Suites they have for my surprise birthday and my partner who works for NHS, first time off in 8 months. checked room, missing ironing board took 45mins to come. Main TV didnt work, didnt get fixed until following day. Saturday morning my partner discovered 2 open condom wrappers under the bed, disgusting! Either room not checked or one team had done this after cleaning and before we checked in. Partner rang downstairs very upset, as we had slept there Friday night. Nobody ran up, or met us at the stairs. We went down for breakfast at 8am spoke to Theo at reception. Spent hour eating a very poor breakfast, unloved and awful presented food. Having spent an hour at breakfast we go to our room, devastated to see it hadnt been cleaned or the condom wrapper removed. No sense of urgency at all. I gave Theo feedback on his checkin and our expectation on what should have been done, we wanted to speak to someone higher, as we were very unhappy with his management and the hygiene standards and service so far, especially in a hotel that was quiet and probably very low occupancy levels. Came back 11am spoke to Ben (OPS MANAGER), told him we felt like full refund and that our time has been spoilt with negativity and wanted to go elsewhere and book a room. He Refunded Friday service. Went back to the room, outside in the hallway looked like a laundry room, still towels everywhere for approximately 8hours, not what you expect to see front facing and in 5 star hotel. Went to spa area, they seemed friendly and ample team (suggest they move some of these FOH to support with service), pool was very warm but unloved and maintenance issues with chipped corners which is H&S concern, could easily get cut on the sides. Missing tiles which wouldnt cost more that £100 to replace (a fraction of a room rate in the hotel), not sure what they had been doing on the time closed. The toilet urinals were in poor condition and filthy with limescale, considering so many team, would expect this to be on point. Oscar served us drinks who was amazing, pleasure talking with him, very efficient and friendly by far the best person in the hotel (the star is for you). Breakfast Way below par, had better breakfast in premier inns, hence we skipped this Sunday and left hotel 9am and went M&S for decent breakfast. Suggest strong review of the quality and presentation of the food, is quite frankly embarrassing which Ben agreed with.In summary a beautiful hotel but poor attention to detail and lack of service, with inexperienced management who cant be doing thought walkabouts or checks on standards regularly. Wasted our time travelling to be disrespected with the service. Although ben tried to compensate financially, the time ruined the whole experience for us. Should have been a great experience because the Suite was lovely. We certainly will not be returning to this hotel, and unlikely going to Bath again anytime soon due to the experience.

Best described as chaotic and shambolic. I accept and understand that staff numbers are limited and I feel sorry for those staff who were trying very hard, but the place appears to lack any management whatsoever. We booked an expensive suite and was told the room was ready for us. All the rooms in our wing had covid hygiene seals on the doors confirming they had been cleaned/prepped for covid, ours wasnt sealed. It wasnt clean, there were various bits on the carpet and was generally grubby. The room was missing coffee pods, milk and bottled water, all of which should have been there if it was properly prepped and ready. I went to reception and they confirmed they would clean and hoover when we went to dinner. They didnt. We had two rooms on our booking and asked reception when we checked in to put our guest room on our pre paid bill, which they confirmed. They didnt, they charged our guests credit card. Our meal in the restaurant was chaotic. My wifes starter didnt arrive, we couldnt attract attention for a while and finally the maitre d came over, he went off to find the starter to discover it hadnt been put through, took my soup away and came back ten minutes later with my soup with a lovely skin on it from the heat lamp . The bread had been toasted and my wifes starter was lacking the bread it was supposed to come with. Couldnt even put a fresh bowl of soup out! Main course (lamb) was tiny and raw and freezing cold. Seats in the restaurant were grubby. Decor faded and well past its best, chaotic service. We went to the bar and waited 30 minutes without service. A very limited drinks and wine menu for a 5 star hotel yet drinks we requsted were out of stock. The two bar staff were trying very hard but they were also preparing all the drinks for the restaurant. I went to reception and they said they didnt expect to be that busy and they would sort a gesture for us. They didnt. They confirmed the credit card charge would be refunded. It wasnt and still hasnt been. If they were so busy and understaffed why take non residents in the restaurants?! We paid £1860 for two rooms for two night (plus £750 for drinks and meal supplements) and got the same poor service as walk ins. Not acceptable. Couldnt use the pool without booking in advance. Only one time slot available for spa treatments. Second night meal was average quality and luke warm. Service was better however. Breakfast was beyond a joke. Total and utter chaos, I felt for the staff. We asked for coffees for our table, they took 20 minutes and were stone cold, I dont mean luke warm, I mean stone cold. it took 4 more pots of cold coffee until we got a hot one, we were at the breakfast table for nearly an hour and a half.....The same bits were on our floor when we checked out despite asking twice for it to be hoovered. The stairs to our room were dirty and not cleaned the time we were there. Piles of dirty laundry left in corridors, store room doors left open, the check in and tills for dinner service had clearly been moved to accommodate a covid friendly breakfast bar, but what a mess. I guess our first impression on arrival of a tatty soggy carpet on the main reception stairs, held in place by 4 poorly fitting strips of Christmas lights of which two werent working kind of summed it up. I must praise the very pleasant staff in the main, who must be very frustrated, but the management of Macdonald Hotels need to visit very soon. Living on past glories and nowhere near a 5 star hote., A spa doesnt make you 5 stars. Its a 2 star plus a Spa. Very disappointing.

Staff were so friendly and facilities are great. Had a wonderful day at the spa. My only negative comments are around the communication. Im fully aware we are in a covid restricted time, but this is not a new thing, their adverts and emails should be updated to reflect the current offer not that of pre-covid. I ordered the spa day which included lunch. When I got to the spa they informed me they arent doing lunch only afternoon tea due to covid. I also received an email stating herbal water and fruit would be available throughout my visit and this was not the case. If we were told this I would have brought snacks and water myself. We were told we should take our afternoon tea as a take away as they would box it up, however when we went to the restaurant they offered us the outdoor seating which was a much nicer experience and the waiter was lovely and attentive. The email also stated all spa facilities were open, but obviously sauna and steam rooms remain shut. So you only have access to the swimming pool and treatment area.I would recommend, but I think they need to be honest about what is available.

Very upmarket hotel but there are a few things that let it down. Our arrival was relatively painless, I wasnt completely happy about the parking charge but did know about it up front. The room was comfortable, though later we found uncomfortably hot in the night, which was difficult to adjust. We went straight down to the pool, steam rooms had been opened so we made the most of those. Id recommend the outside pool over the indoor if your a couple looking for a quiet retreat. Wed booked dinner in the restaurant so headed there next. Unfortunately it was a new chef in the kitchen. When my wifes salmon arrived it was undercooked. The meal was taken away and another prepared. Id finished mine by this time. The next salmon was also raw inside, we gave up. The restaurant did remove the meal and a drink from the bill. We retired to the drawing room for a drink, which was lovely. Breakfast was good, though on the second morning we got forgotten for 30mins before someone came to take our order for the second time. Again the hotel made it right and took that off the bill. We wondered from the hotel into town a lovely 15 minute walk through a park. Bath is a beautiful city! We came back for some afternoon tea in the drawing room, which was really good. All in all a good visit but as I said it was let down by a couple of simple things.

Staff friendly and pleasant but for the price I expected a bit more attention to detail but again this is probably as a result of Covid measures 😢

It is very welcoming and nice hotel. The only downside is that staff forgot to clean our room! And when we arrived to the room in the evening I tried to contact reception, concierge, housekeeping and there was no answer. It is a very expensive hotel, just for them to have missed this important matter and not have addressed it.

Once there, the place was very pleasant as long as your able to see around the rough rooms with carpets pulling up and sockets half loose, however the booking process was painful! After booking the room to then be told the spa wasn’t available, although we booked it with the spa was quite frustrating. Once resolved, we then arrived to find out our allocated times were not booked in. Also £15 for parking, on top of an overpriced room feels like a kick in the teeth! Fix up!

A lovely hotel and very friendly staff.Book a garden room and get a great view as well.We didnt use the restaurant apart from breakfast. We had a treatment booked and the queue for breakfast was so long at 10 am that we had to skip it.We came back after the spa treatment at 11 and asked them if there was anything they could do.Wow - they cooked us eggs and made us fresh sausage. We were amazed.A lovely place to stay.

A beautiful peaceful and grand hotel in Bath which takes you back to the past and disconnects you from modern day stresses. So many cosy areas for you to discover and relax. The staff were very friendly there and the place was clean and comfortable. We had a suite room which was very nice and quiet. We slept well and enjoyed every moment here. The gardens and the views of Bath make it all the worthwhile.

We feel very lucky that we had a voucher for this otherwise very expensive hotel - best words are ‘dated’ and ‘tired’ as while the grounds and building are lovely, everything needs a bit more care. The bed was huge but was the best thing. The carpet in our room made me glad there were free slippers; tea and coffee had not been replenished; breakfast not included; you have to pay £15 to park your car in their car park (!); spa details only given over the phone; check-in time of 4.00pm means Bath is closing as you’re checking in; no fridge even in our ‘deluxe’ room; phone to reception/room service not answered after 8.30pm. To sum up - this hotel would do well to realise that it’s now 2020 and things our grandparents would find familiar are no longer charming.

I and my partner stayed here a while ago as a weekend trip away from London. We throughly enjoyed our trip, the food was great, it’s in a beautiful location about 20 minutes walk from the inner city and the rooms are super clean and tidy.Visited : February 2020

Great hotel, but some points that needed improvement.Breakfast- not much variety with the hot buffet, only one variety of eggs (scrambled).Bar - in the evening only had one bar man, and had to wait at least 20 minutes before we got served.Good points- Great spa, and clean.Would definitely go back.

Very nice rooms and overall a pleasant state. However I had concerns over COVID compliance. Hand gel at key touch points were empty and not refilled during our two day stay despite mentioning to staff. Disappointed and concerning that this did not appear a priority.

In the circumstances (i.e the current nastiness) - we couldnt fault the place. It is a beautiful building and immaculate inside. Just very surreal rattling round in it with hardly anyone else there... We had the entire (beautiful) restaurant to ourselves. The food was exquisite. Try the Goats Cheese & Tomato starter. Plus a fine, fine burger. Even had breakfast in a box!?! Different - but again tasty. Look forward to going back when it comes to life with more people. Good luck everyone and thank you x (ps Thank you David - you made our meal special)

This place is exceptional, service and staff couldn’t have been any better! Everything went very smooth, we even got an upgrade to a room on the second floor. The place itself is beautiful with very impressive architecture and decoration. The gardens on the outside were wonderful and very very picturesque. Valet service is also available.

We arrived for a nights stay around 15:30 and were welcomed in fairly quickly and efficiently. The room was nice and comfortable with a king size bed and facilities included selection of teas or coffee, with a mini fridge iron/ironing board. We headed out into the the centre of Bath for an evening meal and a couple of drinks before returning to the hotel for a night cap. We arrived at the bar to find a trainee member of staff who could not serve alcohol legally. 30 minutes later the bar tender arrived with no apology for the delay, I complained and he offered a free drink, so he redeemed himself there. The night was fairly relaxing comfortable bed with no complaints from us. In the morning we heading for Breakfast around 8am with a fairly good selection of cereals, buffet style English breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms tomatoes and toast. No complaints. We checked out an hour later to be greeted with a £15 parking bill? Even though we’re paying guests and no communication about this had been given at check in - even after discussing we had to write down our vehicle registration otherwise we would get an unpleasant letter haha. Not impressed with that - what are we paying £15 for? A car wash? A service of some kind maybe? No, just to park it in the guest car park - oh what a privilege! In summary - hotel lovely, service and communication - appalling improvement much needed there!

Had some reservations after reading reviews on a certain review site which I can honestly say were totally unfounded in our experience. Easy check in, all staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Pristine gardens, very clean inside and very grand. All areas of the hotel were comfortably warm.We only ate breakfast at the hotel due to the vast array of quality restaurants in Bath. Breakfast was tasty and sufficient, no long wait for drinks and again, the staff were friendly and helpful. My only small criticism would be the lack of a bin/cigarette bin outside of the Hotel, it seems a shame to make a mess when it is evident how hard the gardening team work to keep the grounds so neat and tidy.Though to be honest, Bath in general seems to lack rubbish bins, which we found strange when wanting to dispose of some wrappers. All in all, a great hotel, excellent location for walking into town, taxis reasonably priced for the less mobile.Recommended, we will be staying again in the future.

A very elegant and up market hotel. We booked in quite late but they still accommodated us with no trouble. They offer a really relaxing spa which includes steam room, sauna, pool and massage room. Full changing facilities were provided and clean soft towels. The room service was nice and quick. The bars although expensive were nice. One of them more cosy than the other. Overall a hotel you wont be disappointed at

Booked to stay over the August Bank Holiday weekend through Lastminute.com. They cancelled our reservation at short notice as they say they overbooked the hotel. They are refusing to refund us our money and instead have issued a voucher. We are now over £700 out of pocket and are forced to waste time trying to raise the matter with our credit card company.

Upon retuning home I realised I had left my new electric shaver in the bathroom. Having done this a few times before in other less expensive hotels, I called to explain what I had done and to ask if they would post it on to me.Several phone calls later from both myself and my other half, we struggled to get a reply back or answer, let alone where my property might be. I have been told its no where to be found. I can only assume that someone has stolen it.Very Very disappointing in an establishment like this. Myself and my other half had visited there on numerous occasions and from now on will.be staying elsewhere. To put it into perspective I have been on the phone to them the whole time in writing this and still no one has picked up.
