Very peaceful. The surrounding near the temple and the new complex area is clean. Very crowded at times. Must cover the head when you visit this temple. A holy place for Sikh and Punjabi to carry out their pilgrimage. There is a lake surrounding the golden temple. It is 3 storey high and the devotees are normally reciting the holy bible.

Sri Harmandir Sahib (The abode of God), also known as Darbar Sahib, (Punjabi pronunciation: [dəɾbɑɾ sɑhɪb]),[2] [3] informally referred to as the Golden Temple,[2] is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is one of the most revered spiritual sites of Sikhism.Amritsar (literally, the tank of nectar of immortality) was founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das.[4] The fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, designed Harmandir Sahib to be built in the center of this tank, and upon its construction, installed the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism, inside Harmandir Sahib.[2] The Harmandir Sahib complex is also home to the Akal Takht (the throne of the timeless one, constituted by the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind). While the Harmandir Sahib is regarded as the abode of Gods spiritual attribute, the Akal Takht is the seat of Gods temporal authority.[5]The construction of Harmandir Sahib was intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religions to worship God equally.[2][6] The four entrances (representing the four directions) to get into the Harmandir Sahib also symbolise the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions.[7] Over 100,000 people visit the shrine daily for worship, and also partake jointly in the free community kitchen and meal (Langar) regardless of any distinctions, a tradition that is a hallmark of all Sikh Gurdwaras.[8]The present-day gurdwara was renovated in 1764 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with the help of other Sikh Misls. In the early nineteenth century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab region from outside attack and covered the upper floors of the gurdwara with 750 kilograms (1,650 lb) of gold, which gives it its distinctive appearance and its English nameNomenclatureThe Harmandir Sahib is also spelled as Harimandar, Harimandir or Harmandar Sahib.[2] It is also called the Darbar Sahib (Punjabi pronunciation: [dəɾbɑɾ sɑhɪb]) which means sacred audience, as well as the Golden Temple for its gold foil covered sanctum center.[11] The word Harmandir is composed of two words, Har, meaning God,[2] and mandir which means temple or house.[12] The Sikh tradition has several Gurdwaras named Harmandir Sahib such as those in Kiratpur and Patna. Of these, the one in Amritsar is most reveredAccording to the Sikh historical records, the land that became Amritsar and houses the Harimandar Sahib was chosen by Guru Amar Das – the third Guru of the Sikh tradition. It was then called Guru Da Chakk, after he had asked his disciple Ram Das to find land to start a new town with a man made pool as its central point.[15][16][17] After Ram Das succeeded Guru Amar Das in 1574, and given the hostile opposition he faced from the sons of Guru Amar Das,[18] Guru Ram Das founded the town that came to be known as Ramdaspur. He started by completing the pool with the help of Baba Buddha (not to be confused with the Buddha of Buddhism). Guru Ram Das built his new official centre and home next to it. He invited merchants and artisans from other parts of India to settle into the new town with him

The Golden Temple is the most sacred and important religious place of Sikhism. It is also known as Sri Harimandir Sahib and Darbar Sahib. Some people also know it by the name of At Sat Tirath. Harminder Sahib (golden temple) is the most important of the five pilgrimage sites of the Sikhs. Let us tell you that this is the place where the holy Dharam Granth of the Sikhs, Adi Granth was also established. It is actually a Gurudwara but it is called Golden Temple because the upper part of this Gurudwara is made of gold. The Golden Temple is located in the city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab. Punjab today is famous not only in India but in the whole world by the name of Golden Temple. Thousands of Sangat (people who come to the Gurudwara are called as Sangat) and tourists come here daily. Not only from India but also from abroad a large number of people come here every year to have darshan. The construction work of Darbar Sahib started in 1588. In 1588, the foundation of Darbar Sahib was laid by Ramdas ji, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. Guru Ramdas ji believed that even non-communal people could unite and worship God in the Darbar Sahib, so he laid its foundation with the Sufi saint of Lahore, Mian Mir. While building the Darbar Sahib, the holy Dharam Granth of the Sikhs, Adi Granth was also installed here. After its construction, attempts were made to destroy the Darbar Sahib several times and some people were successful. But that saying is not that “What happens if the issue is bad, it is what is acceptable to God” that the faith of the devotees proved this to be true. Even after thousands of attempts to destroy the Gurudwara, no one could succeed in his plan forever. The number of times it was tried to be demolished, it was rebuilt again and again. In the 19th century, Afghan invaders destroyed a large part of the Darbar Sahib, then it was rebuilt by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He not only completed the construction of the Gurudwara, but also decorated its upper part with a layer of gold, since then it was also called the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple has gates in all four directions. From which it is known that people of any caste or religion can come here to the Gurudwara. In earlier times, due to some disputes and problems, people of other religion or sect were not allowed to visit many more temples. But people of all religions could visit this Gurudwara from the very beginning. No restrictions were imposed here before, nor are they imposed today. The history of the Golden Temple can also be seen on the wall of the Gurudwara here. History is written in Gurmukhi (language of Sikhs) on the walls here.
