Akal Takht serves as one of the five seats of Sikh religious authority. Akal which means the ‘Timeless One’ while Takht means ‘the throne’. Translated, Akal Takht means the ‘Throne of the Immortal’. It is also the central altar for the Sikh political assembly. Shri Guru Hargobind Singh laid the foundation stone of the Akal Takht building in 1605.The building faces the Darshini Deorhi, which leads to the Golden Temple. Originally the Akal Takht was just 3.5 metres higher from the ground. Today, it’s a 5 storey building with gold leafed dome.

The Akal Takht (Throne of the Timeless One) is one of five takhts (seats of power) of the Sikhs. It is located in the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The Akal Takht (Originally called Akal Bunga) was built by Shri Guru Hargobind Ji as a place of justice and consideration of temporal issues; the highest seat of earthly authority of the Khalsa (the collective body of the Sikhs) and the place of the Jathedar, the highest spokesman of the Sikhs.Originally known as Akal Bunga, the building directly opposite to the Harmandir Sahib was founded by sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind, as a symbol of political sovereignty and where spiritual and temporal concerns of the Sikh people could be addressed. Along with Baba Buddha and Bhai Gurdas, the sixth Sikh Guru built a 9-foot-high concrete slab. When Guru Hargobind revealed the platform on 15 June 1606, he put on two swords: one indicated his spiritual authority (piri) and the other, his temporal authority (miri). In the 18th century, Ahmed Shah Abdali and Massa Rangar led a series of attacks on the Akal Takht and Harmandir Sahib. Takht which is on the first floor was rebuilt in brick between 1770–1780, under Sultan-ul-Qaum Jassa Singh Ahluwalia (1718–1783) – the leader of the Sikh Confederacy in Punjab.Hari Singh Nalwa, a general of Ranjit Singh, the maharaja, decorated the Akhal Takht with gold. The modern building is a five-story structure with marble inlay and a gold-leafed dome. Three of the stories were added by Ranjit Singh in the 1700s. Contemporary restoration work found a layer of paint decorated lime plaster that might have been part of the original structure but later than the time of Harmandir Sahib ji.

AKAL TAKHT: The word ‘Akal’ means, time-less (often used for Almighty-God) Takhat means a throne (seat) where the kings, emperors used to sit. Hence Akal Takhat : the seat of Almighty.Due to the excavation of the holy pool of nectar (Amrit-Sarovar), a raised place had appeared in front of Harmandir Sahib. As Guru Granth Sahib was installed in Harmandir Sahib in 1604, it was brought to this room for rest every night. Guru Arjan Dev used to rest under the cot meant for Guru Granth Sahib. This room now a days is, known as Kotha Sahib.AKAL TAKHAT, The highest temporal seat of Sikhism was founded by the Sixth Sikh master Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji in the year 1609, assisted by Baba Budha Ji and Bhai Gurdas. Guru named it Akal Takhat (The throne of Almighty). Guru Hargobind Sahib used to hold his court, listened to the woes of needy. Guru wore two swords of Miri and Piri at this place, the worldly emperor robe with plume on the turban, ordered the Sikhs to bring weapons, horses as offering and be saint and soldier as well. The tradition of singing ballads of war heroes with stringed instrument (Sarangi and Dhad) began at this place.Akal Takhat has its own traditions i.e. the priest will recite the evening prayer (Rehras Sahib) and Ardas, with a naked sword in the hand. Some rare weapons pertaining to the Sikh Gurus and Sikh warriors are displayed during the day in Golden Palanquin and explained to the visitors every evening.

The amazing peacefulness, devotion and true spirit to serve in the of God just touched my heart. No hassles, no haggling, no politics, every person gets a fair chance to spent time ther. Literal meaning of Akal Takht is The throne of almighty or The Temporal Seat of the Timeless one... and it really is. Its the symbol of Power of faith. It was built under 6th Guru of Sikhs.. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib. He built this throne to challenge the supremacy of Mughal empire of that time. He was also called master of Miri and Piri. Which means , for Sikhs, he was both religious and political leader. To depict this he used to carry two swords ⚔️.Location of Akal Takht was planned in such a way that it backed Harmander Sahib, the most sacred place of Sikhs. Harmander Sahib (also known as Golden temple) denotes Bhakti or religious devotion and Akal Takht denotes Shakti or Power. It is a place of justice. Since its inception The Akal Takht is also used as a court to resolve religious issues. Several edicts are issued from here, justice is delivered and even religious punishments are also ordered to the guilty.

The gurdwara is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das in 1577.[5][6] Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed, a Muslim Pir of Lahore, to lay its foundation stone in 1589.[7] In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib.[2][8] The Gurdwara was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Mughal and invading Afghan armies.[2][4][9] Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.[10][11][12]The Golden Temple is spiritually the most significant shrine in Sikhism. It became a center of the Singh Sabha Movement between 1883 and 1920s, and the Punjabi Suba movement between 1947 and 1966. In the early 1980s, the Gurdwara became a center of conflict between the Indian government led by Indira Gandhi, some Sikh groups and a movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. In 1984, Indira Gandhi sent in the Indian Army as part of Operation Blue Star, leading to deaths of over 1,000 Sikh soldiers and civilians, as well as causing much damage to the Gurdwara and the destruction of Akal Takht. The Gurdwara complex was rebuilt again after the 1984 damage.[4][13]The Golden Temple is an open house of worship for all people, from all walks of life and faith.[2] It has a square plan with four entrances, has a circumambulation path around the pool. The complex is a collection of buildings around the sanctum and the pool.[2] One of these is Akal Takht, the chief center of religious authority of Sikhism.[4] Additional buildings include a clock tower, the offices of Gurdwara Committee, a Museum and a langar – a free Sikh community run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination.[4] Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship.[14] The Gurdwara complex has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its application is pending on the tentative list of UNESCO.[15]

The Amritsar campus is a very sacred ground. Sri Harmandir Sahib is one such shrine which was declared by Baba Arjan Dev as Ath Sath Tirtha.  Baba Arjan Dev ji had given a special advice to Baba Hargobind ji in his last time. With arm sit on your Seat completely and build an army. Thus Sri Akal Takht Sahib was established. This is one of the most sacred throne among the five known Panj Takhat.Original Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Ji was built by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Bhai Gurdas Ji and by Baba Buddha Ji without any support of devotees or labour, about 12 feet high platform was erected in 1606 AD to serve the Sikh cult and humanity for ever. Guru Ji used to sit daily on this Royal Throne he issued justice to the community. As it was Infront of the Kotha Sahib and little off side not facing to the Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji, so it was known as Akal Bunga.  A Sikh Empire was founded in the form of Akal Takhat Sahib Ji.This place was the site where the Guru used to entertain assemblies with his sermon and delivered justice and issued ordinance Hukmnama. He used to dispose off all types of issues confronting the community  Guru Ji used to wore two swords one for Miri and other for Piri, one signifying Secular other signifying the spiritul aspect. Edicts were issued by the guru from here to his followers that instead of traditional offerings they should presents effective weapons, horses and young man in the service of Guru. Such acts were a sort of open declaration of war against the illiberal Mughal forces. He trained the sikh as he himself was a mater of Sikh Martial arts. Songs of war and bravery used to be sung amidst beating of Nagara, armed soldiers in battle gear were dispatched from this spot to eliminate torture and canny of the Mughal Empire. Later on this place the regular converging point of Sikh masses at Diwali and Baisakhi to resolve and decide the Sikh matters. Controversial issues if any used be settled here.Sri Akal Takhat Sahib is thus a most tangible evidence of autonomous character of Sikh Society. Even today edicts are issued from the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, if required to resolve the problems concerning principles. The edicts are treated and accepted as an order of the Guru by every Sikh. The two saffron coloured highmast flags opposite to the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib are the symbol of Miri and Piri. It also signifies that these two forces stand subjugation under none.At this place historical arms and armours belonging to the Gurus and their sons, martyrs and Sikh warriors are formally taken out and shown to the congregation every evening after the sikh vespers. The Kotha Sahib a Room situated on the ground floor of the main building originally was the place where Guru Arjan Dev Ji used to retreat for the night After the completion of the compilation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib bed became the Seat for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji started sleeping upon the floor just below the bed even now in the memory of Gurus practice, a White Sheet is laid on the floor under the bed every day. This bed is the place of night halt for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jl, when after the last ceremony at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are formally brought aloft the Golden Planquin Sahib by a group of Pious Sikhs. A well is also there. Its architecture is unique and five storey building is little lower in height than Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji. Its three storeys were built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh even he was punished by the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Ji. Its Architecture is splendid and the religious activities are touching the soul. Many times it had faced the attacks even a severe attack in 1984 by the Government of India. Still bullet marks can be noticed on the wall of gate. Its chastity was restored and Jathedar remain a Chief Priest and edicts are released from here can be noticed anywhere in the world as displayed on notice boards.I love to visit again and love to participate in all the sacred activities. Its a major attraction among pilgrimage devotees history buffs wanderers soulseekers herita

The Akal Takht is part of the complex of religious buildings centred on the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple, the principal Sikh house of worship. It is situated just beyond a large gateway at the entrance to the causeway across the tank (pool) that leads to the Golden Temple. The building was badly damaged during the assault on the Golden Temple by the Indian army in June 1984. It was subsequently rebuilt.

Akal Takhat Sahib means Eternal Throne. It is also part of the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. Its foundation was laid by Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru. The Akal Takhat is situated opposite to Harmandir Sahib and is connected by a passage. The building of the Akal Takht opposite the Golden Temple has a special meaning. While the Golden Temple stands for spiritual guidance the Akal Takhat symbolizes the dispensing of justice and temporal activity. In earlier days all Sikh warriors sought blessings here before going to battle fields. During the 18th century while Sikhs were fighting a guerrilla war in the forests they used to gather at the Akal Takht on special occasions such as Vaisakhi. Here the community used to have general meetings and approve resolutions. The Akal Takht is the oldest of the Five Takhats.

The temple and the surroundings are very serene and blissful. One can witness the amount of devotion . Langar is something unimaginable, serving the food to devotees all 24 hrs. They should improve the roads leading to the temple from car parking area. They are narrow, with pot holes and dirty . The road to such a holy place should be very good. Some one should come forward and see to this aspect of the city/temple.

The Akal Takht meaning throne of the timeless one, is one of five takhts (seats of power) of the Sikhs. It is located in the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar, Punjab. The Akal Takht was built by Shri Guru Hargobind as a place of justice and consideration of temporal issues; the highest seat of earthly authority of the Khalsa (the collective body of the Sikhs) and the place of the Jathedar, the highest spokesman of the Sikhs. The current Jathedar of Akal Takht appointed by the SGPC is Giani Harpreet Singh, while the Sarbat Khalsa calls for the reinstitution of Jagtar Singh Hawara

Beautiful building in the premises of Harmandar Sahib.Akal means The Timeless One - another term for God. Takhat means throne in Persian. The Akal Takhat is an impressive building that sits directly in front of the causeway leading to the Golden Temple. It stood as a symbol of political bulwark against the Mughal Emperors in the 17th and 18th century.

Some places in India are beyond these Google Maps ratings. And this temple is one among them.British people, made fun of Sardars by cracking Sardarji jokes. And we idiots, Indians, still make fun of the Sikhs. The true patriots of this great nation are these Sikhs.Hats off to them. The temple is well constructed and managed. The hospitality can be seen in any of their temples, in their dining hall. The place is always crowded, hence not ideal for meditation. But you will enjoy every second that you spend here.If my review is useful, click on LIKE below.

Adjacent to the Golden Temple, is the marble paved square facing the Darshni Deorhi. On the opposite side of the marble square stands the Akal Takht, which is regarded as the supreme seat of Sikh religious authority. It was constructed by the sixth Guru Sri Hargobind in 1609. It is also called as Akal Bunga, the house of the Lord. The place is repository of the various weapons used by Sikh Gurus and heroes. These weapons are ceremoniously displayed every. evening to the congregation of devotees. The Akal Takht being the holiest of holy seats of the Sikhs, was used for a special purpose which considerably changed the Sikh character andorganization. The sixth Guru himself sat here and held a court of justice. Many Sikhs gathered here for the redressal of their grievances. Offerings were made to the Guru.At the place where Akal Takht is situated was a playground, and the Guru used to play here during his childhood. Here he was ceremoniously installed as the Guru in 1606 after the death of his father Guru Arjun Dev. The sixth Guru Hargobind watched the Sikhs performing exercises in the art of warfare. He was imparting them training for the coming struggle against the Mughal authoritarianism.
