I didnt know how big this was until i visited it. I thought maybe what you see from outside, thats all the caves they have. This is like a smaller version of kanheri caves. It has a bit of garden around it. It is a well maintained place. The caves are well maintained too. Entry fee is 25 rps. You can do a photoshoot here and they have extra charges too. Its better to contact them directly to know the prices

You will definitely get surprised to see this serene area located in middle of busy metro city. Belongs to great historian past, this structure is beautiful to visit once if you are interested in such kind of places. No entry fee , no food stalls inside , fairly clean surrounding but needed more to take care of this structure. Though located in average n bit slum area; Evening sight seeing one may find interesting here especially view from top. It can be good place for foreign tourist too as its location & complete sight seeing may not take longer than 1 hour or so PROVIDED increased in security and cleanliness . Food & other beverages can be found along Link road or around mahakali road junction area.

I was expected a mahakali temple there. It will be a beautiful place if the tourist officials and authorities give a little more care. There are many caves under ground as well as in ground levels which is designed like different rooms. Now that place is not good for a solo visit. I couldnt see a temple over there. The road to the place is not in a good condition. But bus transportation and autoriksha are available there. Now it is a place where couples can use to spend for their private moments. And I really didnt want to spend my time there more than a half hour. No entry pass. No security and not safety at all. But the place is beautiful

Being a follower of Buddhism I am enthusiastic to visit each ancient rock-cut Budhhist monastery. This a set of East facing rock-cut architecture on a monolithic mountain at Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road at Mumbai. Like all other rock-cut cave in Maharastra this cave consists of Vihara and Chaitya hall. Though based on the carvings and ornamentations of chronological order this Chaitya hall comes first in all other 9 caves.

Monument consists of two groups of rock-cut caves - 4 caves more to the north-west and 15 caves more to the south-east. Most caves are viharas and cells for monks, but Cave 9 of south-eastern group is chaitya. Caves in north-west have been created mainly in 4th - 5th century, while south-eastern group is older. Monument contains also rock-cut cisterns and remnants of other structures.Caves are carved out of a solid black basalt rock,(volcanic trap breccias, prone to weathering). The largest cave at Kondivite (Cave 9) has seven depictions of the Buddha and figures from Buddhist mythology but all are mutilated. It is located near the junction between the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and SEEPZ. Lying at an elevation of 230 feets above sea level in Andheri East,Mahakali caves is Buddhist monastery. Formerly known as Kondivita Caves, this site has great religious significance. It is a set of 19 rock-cut caves that was built between 1st century and 6th century. Carved out of a solid basalt rock, this religious edifice has caves, rock out cisterns and remnants of the other structures.Four of the 19 caves lie in the northwest, while the remaining 15 are on the south eastern side. Most of the caves here are viharas and cells for Buddhist monks . A visit to this truly fascinating attraction is an absolute must . The quaint beauty, religious prominence and mesmeric rock cut architecture of mahakali caves have attracted and continue to attract countless people from all corners of the country. This Buddhist monastery provides a stunning backdrop for pictures.

The smaller version of Kanheri caves; Mahakali [or Kondivita caves as originally known] is less frequented by tourists [thankfully!!] .The caves [apx 19 rock cut caves] are in marginally better condition than they were about 10-15 years ago; but still a long way to go. There is no ASI office or guide to walk you thru the caves. You need to exercise your own imagination to interpret the caves or browse thru sketchy information on google. The approach road to caves from Andheri east station is quite narrow . Bus no 333 drops right outside the cave complex. The most ideal approach is via JVLR road and take a turn at Kamlistan Studio signal. The caves are barely 5 min drive from the signal. Its rather sad that heritage places like Mahakali caves are quite neglected and nobody seems to care. The entire surrounding area has been taken over by migrants & slums who have turned once densely green area in to hell hole. Its worth a visit ; if you are interested in history. Dont come with too many expectations!! #suhaskatti
