IMPASTO/Porchetta, Hot Cherry Peppers, Smoked Caciocavallo, Salsa Verde.Ive know about Stefano Faita and Michele Forgione since out of culinary school and for some time before. They are one of the empires of the food scene in Montreal and Little Italy. They have 3 well known spots called Impasto, Chez Tousignant and the one we will be chatting about here which is Pizzeria Gema..I am I big fan of the two locations Gema and Tousignant, Ive still yet to go to Impasto but Im hoping real soon! What I love at these spots is everything is trying to be sourced locally in the community and made in house. From the doughs, the pastas, the sauces (which they sell in IGAs across MTL) even the hot dogs and buns they make in house. There isnt much they dont make or try to make these guys! Its pretty impressive..Now getting down to the pizza. I wanna start by saying the pizzas at Gema are in my top 3 of best in MTL and Id almost give it the title but its so close with 2 others I still havent decided hahah 😅..The Impasto was the first pizza that I got their and I have to say it delivered 🙏. The dough was perfect, wasnt soggy and had a nice texture and crust to it giving a crunch threw out. The Porchetta was amazing and tender, not to salty. The smokeyness of the Caciocavallo really gave threw but wasnt at all overwhelming. Salsa Verde lent some freshness and acidic nots to the pizza which complimented it really well and the pickled peppers gave a nice kick..A perfect spot, perfect duo, perfect pizza 🙏🍕
Great service! Octopus salad appetizer was phenomenal….. pizza was good but not as good as it once was. The sauce was acidic and tasted more like a pasta sauce than a Neapolitan pizza sauce. Still really good.
Great staff that helped accommodate my food intolerances and answered any questions I had- food/wine was S O G O O D 💖 10/10 recommend the Vetri (pizza with the buffalo milk cheese, mortadella and pistachios)Edit: went again (make sure to make a reservation before you come!) and was seated outside, got the same thing and food was so good the bees were buzzing around me
This is my new go-to pizzeria in Montreal. Ive been going to Italy every year for the last 3 years because I love their food! Im a big fan of Bufala and this is as close to authentic Italian pizza you can get: thin & fresh dough, light but not too salty sauce, and perfect topic combination. Id highly recommend the Jenn (pictured right). 1889 and Crudo (pictured left) are also great! Thanks Gema for giving us delicious and affordable pizza 🧡
Some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. The crust was a bit too thin though, and I found that the pepperoni was falling off right when I picked up the pizza to eat it. Taste was perfect though, highly recommend this place if you want good pizza 🍕.
Recently got a few takeout options from Gema Pizzeria and they were enjoyable! The standout for me was the crust, its thin and crisp across the entire pizza, and the charring on the bottom is delicious. My brother was less impressed with several of the toppings on a pepperoni and artichoke pizza, but I will give Gema Pizzeria the benefit of the doubt and consider that a matter of choice. The sauce for me was also a standout and I enjoyed the presence of fresh basil leaves on the Jenn option. I wasnt as crazy about the Quebec mozzarella, nor the sprinkling of oregano, but Gema Pizzeria is certainly another very good spot in Montreal for pizza.
Busy for a Saturday night but the atmosphere still felt inviting. Waiter was rude. Asked a simple question about the food where he took offence and told me if I didn’t like it I could cancel the order and “ciao” some French dude from France. Excuse me? He brought me the bill had the audacity to touch the Interac machine as I had it in my hands and told me to tip 0$. So in fact I did. Never ever going back, making sure that those I know never go either. You can get food and better service elsewhere. Don’t waste your money!
Great pizza place! I ordered the Jenn with added mushrooms and it was delicious. When I finished, I wanted there to be more! The Pizza is cooked at a slightly higher temperature, so youll get pockets of burnt but crispy crust. I liked it, but my friends didnt. The sauce was perfect and just the way I liked it. I had their home brew beer as well and I loved it (Gema blonde). The service was very polite, accommodating and knowledgeable. Our waitress knew the menu well and made great recommendations. Thanks for a great evening!
Walking around little Italy I thought to myself, its pizza day! I sat down at Gema and looked at the menu. There it was. A Hawaiian pizza. I knew it was fate. This fiery dish, with a glass of red wine just hit the spot. Its ok to love Hawaiian pizza.
The food was good. Limited offerings. Very loud inside. Took a very long time to get order. Overal decent. Home made mortadella was good.
FOOD WISE = The Best of the Best !!! Trust me 🤩👍👍. I’ve only been there 3 times due to my scheduling, and because it is pretty hard to get parking in that area . I suggest BMW . Bus, Metro, walk 😅
Their passport app wasn’t working properly and even when we showed the vaccination passport they guy at the entrance made us feel we were liars, we told them that the code had worked before plenty of time and then they tried again and worked! At that moment I left cause one thing is they need the passport but treating your clients as liars is just not ok. The code had even the date we got the 2nd vaccine the names
I love it, 10 years after we left Italy, finally we got an opportunity to taste true pizza...will go back again
Casual spot in little italy. Limited menu outside of pizzas, but those are tasty. Doesnt take itself too seriously, which is good.
The restaurant is nice, finally accepting customers both outside and inside and the staff is friendly and helpful!I usually eat the 1889 pizza, which is for me a good quality/price option at $17, but this time I wanted to try something different and went for the pizza of the month (bacon, smoked provola, crushed pistachios and arugula sprouts). The pizza was too much burned. Dont get me wrong, I like very well cooked pizza, but this one was too much. I was expecting more than a few pieces of bacon here and there and I couldnt even detect the smoked provola. Last thing, too much oil all over it - really not needed.
Great appetizers and pizza!Ingredients are always fresh and staff makes sure that the pizza of the month is something interesting every time and makes you want to come back!Dough is tender and airy yet strong enough to hold all the toppings. And once you had your calamari and your pizza, and your full, make some space to finish it off with one of their amazing custards 😉
A small place that pack great ambiance and pizzas with incredible flavors. Put this restaurant in your to do list when you are in the little Italy !
Good pizza and amazing staff, best service I got in Montreal
The food is amazing! Service is just as great as the food! Highly recommended for a night out, we were able to walk in but a reservation is always best!
I love this place. My favourite pizza is the Jenn. They really pay attention to quality - the dough is light and chewy, and the tomato sauce is super flavourful. The service here is excellent as well - they always go above and beyond to help you out!
Delicious pizza! Might even be the best in town to be honest.
The best pizza I have ever had.
Gema is like that one movie that everybody talks about, but keeps on disappointing you. Well Gema is that 50 Shades Of Grey. The place is lovely, but the pizza and drinks are far from worthy. Christian Grey brought my ex-wife to climax more than both I or this pizza could ever do. The ice cream is ok, but my guests found it a bit too sweet.
Great food and service. The Amelia pizza is very tasty.
The dough is so so good! Highly recommend this place.
Good pizza though music was too loud.
Great food amazing staff Carlos &Raphael
Fantastic pizza! Finally made my way out here to try the pizza and it was worth it forsure! The sauce is fantastic and the dough and crust is just perfectly done! Also if you like a little kick I really recommend the spicy oil which complements the pizza perfectly!
Excellent pizza ! Felt like I really was in Italy 😋😋
Love it!Awesome - authentic - Unpretentious - friendly. Small place to eat indoors so reserve early. Not ideal for large groups.Good selection of private imported wines.3 words:VetriHawaiienYann
We came here with no pre conceived ideas or hopes. We were meeting some friends after a long day running around and were pretty hungry. But the people we were meeting said it was really good, and we would like it.
Montreals best pizza. And the people are super nice. Would be absolutely perfect if there was one or two vegan options.
Best pizza in town
Great place. Quick service and nice staff.Pizza variety is pretty decent, tons of choices for the meat lovers and only some for the vegeterians.Toppins were super fresh and put generousely. Great house draft beer and spicy sauce to accompany the pizza.Crust is burnt, yet not too much. Bottom could have been more burnt, but held the entire structure well enough.
Best pizza in Little Italy and probably in Montreal. No900: not enough toppings. Stella: too much topping. Napoletana: the crust cannot hold the toppings, too thin. Il Focoialo: Croat/topping ratio is off. Adamo: great for a slice but you want the whole thing. Elena: looks good haven’t tried. Melrose: limited options.P.s. Gema is even good for take out. 5/5.
One of the best in Montréal
Terrible neighbor. I constantly experience customers parking in the adjacent bike lane and prohibited area to get their orders, even eating them in the car! You should bother looking out the window and refuse to serve until they find a real parking spot.
Ordered via skipthedishes. Was pretty good!
Best pizza in town.
Since pizza is life for me. I decided to try this soit-disant gem out. Especially with all the hype around it being the best pizza in Montreal. Sadly, it wasn’t. It was normal. Blah. Sans plus. 😢
Really pleasantly surprised, great service and that pizza is amazing - especially if you are picky about crust, it was perfect.
I went to Gema on the night of Saturday, January 19 after a friend recommended it. I made reservations weeks prior through the website. It was very easy and appreciated having that tool. We got there and the place was packed, but our seats were ready and waiting for us. The food was great. We were 2 people and each got a different pizza, no drinks other than water. The service was great as well. Ordering dessert was inevitable, especially after reading the description and seeing what it looked like on other peoples tables. The price was reasonable and will definitely be going back! Thanks for the great experience.
This pizza is seriously awesome. Like 10/10 but watch out for that chilli oil! As an advocate for spicy food I can say that that stuff was crazy. I love spicy Indian food, spicy ramen, spicy Korean chicken. The guy warned me it was spicy but I decided to lather all of it on one slice of pizza anyway. As my life flashed before my eyes I had realized I made a huge mistake. I tried to ask my girlfriend to bring me to the hospital but all that came out was my tears. I spent the next few minutes crying over the sink, wondering how I lost control of my life.Great pizza though!
Not sure what the hype is about. A few other places do the same thing (Magpie is subjectivity better). I only ordered the 1889, essentially a Margherita, so maybe I need to give a couple others a try, but this is the bench mark for Napoli-style pizza. Kind of underwhelmed. They have ice cream from a take-out window during the summer, and I find it a little sweet.
Best service
Really friendly staff! The pizza was really unique and delicious; I particularly loved the Vetri, which was a pistachio pesto with mortadella on a super thin but bouncy crust. The frozen custard is also i n c r e d i b l e. Its the creamiest mouth feel with the texture of soft serve. Its ruined almost all other ice cream/gelato for me.
Best pizza in Montreal in my opinion. Great wine cards with unique products!
This place is amazing. Definitely one of the best pizzas in town.
Good pizza
Amazing place, loved the food and the service was amazing! The whole staff was very welcoming and the water who served us, Carlos, was very professional. Can’t wait to come back here!
During COVID-19, their delivery pizza is extremely disappointing, there is nothing on it. On a whole pizza, I had 3 pieces of sausages and 5 penny size pepperoni . I went there when the restaurant was open and had an amazing night with friends. Tried to give it a shot in take-out. Never again.
Amazing pizza. Very good dough, well cooked and tasty ingredients
The pizza was very good. Loved the crust as it had a perfect texture and the proportion of sauce and cheese was perfect. The salad, although I finished I wasnt a big fan of. I felt the tastes of the strawberries mixed with the pickled asparagus was too much.
I was surprised with a gourmet adventure, I tried a Hawaiian pizza.... It was beyond expectations. What a fantastic surprise!. We had a great family time, pizza and bubble. Try it!. Best pizzas!
Great pizza, did something all my Italian friends would kill me for and ordered a pineapple carpaccio pizza that was simply delicious. You must have in-house ice cream. All pizzas were very good with unique flavours .
I visit this excellent restaurant many times since I enjoy the special air that is part of this restaurant. The crew is awfuly loving and skilfull. The service is extraordinarily efficient. Also, the food you eat is good. I came often and I was always pleased. The expense is modest. I highly recommend this place to all my friends.
Been there more than enough. They are always consistent with the taste of their food. The food always feels good. The staff are professional. The service is always good.
I love this place. You know its gourmet when the crust has air pockets with gold crispy spots. Lovely atmosphere to bring a date to.
Gema is a cozy spot. I had high expectations. The food could have been perfect if only they could substitute ingredients for vegan options. I asked to substitute the ham and cheese on my selection of pizza with a few additional mushrooms. The waitress said it would cost an additional 3$..now how does that make any sense??. Most places will happily add a few more veggies. Then it took an 1 1/2 to get our pizzas. While others around us were served.. I prefer fugazzi pizza.
Wonderful pizza and very decadent ice cream. I had a glass of orange wine that was also fantastic. Deducting one star because the waiter failed to tell us about how hot the spicy oil was (another waitress confirmed that the oil usually comes with a warning, which was good to know because it made me feel like less of a wuss), and it absolutely blew my face off. Id have never used it if I had known it was so hot, made for a bit of a frantic experience each time I took an oil-affected bite.
One of the best pizzas in Montreal. Amazing dough, great ingredients and an amazing ambiance. Great for a date night of catching up with friends!
Not my favorite type of crust, a little more cooked then a what I like. Still a decent pizza.
Just the best pizza in town. It’s a busy place, so get a reservation or walk in at 5pm sharp and get a table for 1 hour. (Enough time to share a pizza with the kids). During summer, order your pizza to go and eat outside on their picnic tables.Their pizza are delicious. It’s a must go.
My wife and I made reservations and got a couple of pizzas. While the pizzas are good Im not sure it warrants a reservation. Maybe the rest of their menu is what accounts for the popularity, but Id have to go back and try something else. I will go back, just not sure when.
It was the first time I there, and I was there with my bf. We didnt know that it was a good thing to have a reservation (because it was so full), but we still managed to get a table after quite a long wait. Actually, I think they kind of forgot us outside, but they excused themself by not charging us for our drinks, so props to them! The pizzas were amazing. The tomato sauce was so tasty!
Great see
Always fresh and delicious, one of the best pizzas in Montreal
Hard to find a better pizza in Montréal. The freshness of the ingredients, the creativity in the pairings and the talent of the cooks is outstanding. Our go to place, every time we have a chance.
A very nice surprise. This restaurant not only serves EXCELLENT pizza, but also tasty and well balanced starters. We had one of the pizzas of the day made with all fresh products and a superb pizza bread, a great salad and trout gravlax for starters. And we finished with a great home made cheese cake with cherries. Nice modern decor, very friendly service. What else for a sunny Sunday ?
