Last Sunday, I went to the Chennai central station to see off my friend. He was going to Calcutta by the Howrah Mail. The waiting hall was crowded with all sorts of passengers. There was a long queue in front of the booking window. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry. A passenger’s pocket was picked. But the pickpocket was caught red-handed and handed over to the police. I bought the ticket and came off. We soon reached the platform. The scene there was very interesting. Passengers were waiting eagerly for the arrival of the train. Some were sitting on benches and smoking or reading newspaper. A few were pacing up and down the platform. The vendors were having a busy time. There was rush at tea-stall. The coolies in red uniforms were sitting in a line. The train stamped in. There was noise and commotions everywhere. There was a great rush at the doors of compartments. Many passengers got down and many more got in. Coolies were seen carrying heavy bundles of luggage on their heads. Children clung to their parents in the great rush. The whole platform was full of noise.Luckily, my friend got a comfortable seat near a window. Soon all were settled. It was time for the train to depart. The guard flew the whistle and waved the green flag. The engine whistled and the train began to move. There was waging of hands and hand kerchiefs. The train gains speed and kept the stations. The platform looked a deserted place once again.

The place is easily accessible by the means of buses and cabs. The station is surrounded by markets. There are almost all sorts of commodities available nearby. The station has two separate blocks for trains of different routes. This is the second largest Railway Station of India after Howrah junction in terms of number of platforms. A lot of local trains run from here as well connecting to the nearby stations and junctions of West Bengal. There also are some booking counters outside the station for the ease of the passengers but they are not opened by the railways. One can get the tickets from there also for their convenience.

After completion, Kolkata Metro Line 2 will pass through Sealdah.Sealdah Railway station was started in 1869. Before 1978, there was a tram terminus at Sealdah station. Trams departed from here towards Rajabazar, Howrah Station, High Court, Dalhousie Square, Park Circus and Dharmatala. The first horse tram service of Kolkata was also started from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat, following the currently route 13, 14 & 16 between Lebutala & Dalhousie Square. The Sealdah-Lebutala & Dalhousie Square-Armenian Ghat (later extended to High Court) stretch is now closed. That terminus was demolished in 1978 also with the Sealdah-Lebutala tram track stretched through Boubazar Street for construction of the Sealdah flyover. Now tram services between Rajabazar-Esplanade, Parkcircus-Burrabazar and other services pass through Sealdah. Currently, a car parking exists in place of the old tram terminus.

One of the busiest and large railway station in the world. Mainly for Kolkata megacity. Currently metro railway construction is going on here. Not enough ticket counters are opened for public services. This is the main problem. Otherwise its ok.

As usual railway station . It is the world busiest railway station. Railway need more focus on sealdah rail station. There is a staff who clean the station. There is a restaurant in the platform. Some times staff can not mantain the proper timing of the train. Railway should focus on timing on the train. They should not harrus the passenger with any cause. Every one need proper cooperation to make smooth run of the railway station from staff to passenger to shopkeeper to police.

One of the busiest railway station in the state of West Bengal. Lakhs of people commute daily on trains departing or arriving here. Such huge footfalls are unique to only few railway stations in the country. Kolkata being the hub of business and commerce and by virtue of being a megacity people from the suburbs and far away places come here and leave for other areas of the state. It has three major sections. The north section, from where trains leave for the northern fringes of the city. Hasnabad and Bongaon (both bordering Bangladesh) are the chief destinations. The main section usually caters to the passengers traveling to the north of Bengal and other far away places of the country. The south section deals with traffic to and from the southern part of the state. Canning, Namkhana (both gateways to the Sunderbans) and Diamond harbour are the important destinations. The sprawling station has enough waiting places, wash rooms, free WiFi, dormitory, catering, provision for physically disabled persons, a large parking space and enquiry services. The surrounding areas are always bubbling with activities. Markets, eateries, hospitals and hotels are in plenty just a stones throw distance.

One of those stations which carries Heritage.... Need improvement of the security system, ticketing system and processes and foremost... There is lack of cleanliness which makes the station looking horrible! And that also affect the passengers... Need maintenance, expansion of platforms... Sometimes the railway tracks becomes water-logged during the rainy seasons....

The sealdah railway station has its Divisional headquarters at Sealdah itself, popularly known as the Sealdah DRM building. The DRM building is quite old and was built during the British Rule. Sealdah railway station is the busiest railway station in Kolkata. One Rajdhani express departs everyday to New Delhi. Other than that, one Duronto is also available for journey to the capital from Sealdah. Transportation from Sealdah to any of the destination is very convenient. There are trains available for mainline (Lalgola,Krishnanagar, Santipur,Naihati,Bandel), Bongaon , Barasat, South section includes Budge Budge , Diamond Harbour. Cabs are available outside the Platform. Buses are also available either from the front of NRS Hospital or from Jagat Talkies Cinema hall. The railway authorities should be appreciated for managing one of the busiest stations of the country exceptionally well.
