Toong on Temple is the most popular Chinese Church in Kolkata because on the ground floor of this temple was once housed a famous Chinese restaurant named “Nanking”, established in 1924 and this restaurant was the First Chinese Restaurant of Kolkata as well as in India. Unfortunately, it was closed down in early 80’s due to some property dispute. The Nanking Restaurant was favorite of many popular Bollywood stars like Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Dilip Kumar and also famous Bengali author Sunil Ganguly was a frequent goer. The God is installed here is Kuandee, God of Warrior, holding a big knife. A big sized lord Buddha is installed in the ground floor. One Chinese news paper still publish from Kolkata that I saw for the first time here.

Located at Tiretta Bazar. The beautiful two storied building once housed the Toong On Church in its first floor, while the ground floor was occupied by the famous Nanking Restaurant (now closed). Nanking Restaurant established in 1924, is considered as the oldest Chinese Restaurant in Calcutta (Kolkata). Toong On Church was featured in the recent Bollywood film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy which recreated Nanking Restaurant on its ground floor. Unfortunately, the surrounding area is not clean as there exists a KMC open garbage dump nearby!

Quite an old cultural relic of chinese settlement in Kolkata dates back to 1924. Chinese God of War, Kwan Ti, resides in this temple. Not maintained well for many years, the furnitures sold off by the owning family, currently there is an old caretaker representing the temple trust managing daily operations. Still a place to visit for those who takes interest in the cultures of foreign settlers in Kolkata.
