Well, history talks, It does, always. This place talks, it communicates, if you listen to the history. An amazing place to see not only the Art and culture of India but also many things ( mummies, skeletons, food grains of India, ecosystems, fossils, etc). The good place for an adult to enreach him/her with great knowledge, and for a kid its an ocean of questions, and new beginnings. I must worn you if you going with one, I, myself went with my little cousin and she demanded a live interaction with a dinosaur in an alive form. Hence be prepared. Also, its easy to reach from Esplanade or Park Street (nearer) metro station, tickets are of Rs.50 for an adult and Rs.20 for a kid (from 5-12 years of age), Rs.500 for foreigners(including masses of Bangladesh). No food inside, for pictures you have to get another ticket. It takes time to explore, hence, suggested to not to go hungry or hurrying.Hope it helps.

Just a word of caution. Get your expectations low about the ambianceIt is located in a heritage building with a large lawn. Such grandeur is restricted only to the building. The maintenance is very poor as most places are not even dusted. However, the quality of display is the best in the world. It has fossils of prehistoric times , metals of all varieties, all kind of animal world. It’s like an one stop encyclopaedia. If you have a child please do take them. Importantly as an adult you will learn a lotThe entry feee is Rs 50/- per adult and for photography its Rs 50/- even if you shoot with your mobile phone.I just hope there is a private entity which gets involved so that at least the museum can be managed liked the best in the world

Indian Museum has always been that one destination we bave craved to visit since our childhood days, everytime school closed for the holidays. But then life caught up and I ended up staying out of Kolkata for a decade. Having had last visited the museum sometime between 2005-2010, decided to revisit after about 15 years. So to start with we were a bit concerned whether the museum was operational or not in this corona time. We checked the timings online, and there was a telephone line which we called and confirmed. However with the cases again rising now, it is best you call on the number provided before you plan to drop in.Since we visited the museum on our way back from an errand, we had quite a few stuff with us. The neatly organised baggage storage section right on front was a big relief. Those who want to click photos with their mobile camera have to bear a slight extra charge. And then of course started the journey which lasted us close to 2 hours. Some of the rooms which get the most visits (for e.g. the Egypt Room) was well maintained. Most of the other rooms, while they have still managed to maintain history they have hosted here since the start of the museum, wear a shabby, school laboratory type of a look. However we were happy to see a revised version of the zoology section where attempts have been made to make the learning fun with the use of bright colours and lights. We hope the concept in that particular room is extended to all the other sections. In short, a must visit if you want to drive the corona blues away. But you must go with 3 hours in hand to truely enjoy and take in all that is stored there. Of course if you want to take a quick stroll, even that will take you an hour, so plan ahead!

If one asks me, Id likely reply that all Museums are great places to visit. Even if you are not interested in History/Archeology/Geology, you can just go there to study the building architecture. When you are inside the building youll have a feeling that you have time traveled into the British Era where the building was first built. The first floor is dedicated completely to Human Evolution and Indian History from the Pre-Mauryan era to the Post-Mughal Period. The first floor also has a collection of Rocks and Minerals that one MUST see.On the second floor well see the collection from Egypt and the famous mummy and reserved fossils of Invertebrates and Reptiles. In the zoological section, mostly present are models of birds, reptiles and marine animals with a few exception of species preserved with formalin. The second floor also has a collection of Indian Paintings stretching through centuries and millenniums.

I had visited this museum nearly 20 years ago in my childhood when we didnt have the convince of snapping pictures of the artefacts on mobiles and had to be sketched on a notepad hurriedly. There are two floors full of archeological specimens of sculptures, animal as well as plant fossils, rock samples, wooden carvings of mandapam, a mummy, mesmerizing inscriptions and engraving on ivory, handloom, painting styles, coins and even collections of rare skeletons. If only the museum would appoint a guide for the audience to understand the inscribed story panel on the Buddhist stupas of barhut or at least put up audio guides describing them, then people would be more interested. The descriptions of the coin room is also very confusing as in the descriptions are difficult to read and the proper samples in crowds. Also cant they properly label the skull specimen for the visitors with shorter height to read without a neck and foot ache and cant they do their cleaning work after hours and at least put up pictures of the artefacts removed for foreign display?

Old heritage that reflects Indian history, culture & tradition. The museum building itself a heritage site. Things are displayed in separate categories in separate hall room. Somewhere “Photography Not Allowed” sign is visible and somewhere not. But if seen they will scold you even if you take a picture in the corridor or open field.Ticket price is 50 INR for adult and 500 INR for foreigners.Place for study tour, research or time passing

Popular tourist spot in kolkata. Museum of British era with vast collection of artefacts. It will take 2 to 3 hours to properly go through the various monuments and artefacts. Good for bringing children. Tickets price is 50 for adults and 20 for children above 5 years. The good thing about this place is that it has a mother child care room for feeding mothers convenience. Parking is a issue, but the place is well connected by metro. Park street metro station is the nearest. Cloak room are there as personal bags are not allowed inside. Must visit place if visiting kolkata.

This is a place where history comes alive. The grandeur of the museum building alone is enough to invoke a feeling of awe.The collection of fossils is highly impressive. However, I feel that they should have guides here, since most of the fossils look like simple rocks, and for laypeople like me its nearly impossible to tell them apart. For example, a sign at the invertebrate gallery says that there is a fossil flower inside a particular showcase, but I couldnt find it there. Besides, it looked like nobody has even dusted the showcases in quite a long time.Putting the minor nitpicks aside, this museum is truly amazing. I couldnt recommend visiting here strongly enough.

Vistited the Indian Museum after a long time, post Lockdown & amazed again. It is open from 10.30 AM to 5.00 PM.This one of the most iconic places in Kolkata. Founded in 1814, this place carries the Legacy of British history and architecture along with uncountable amount of historical elements.A perfect place of short time spending along with family specially with children. Recommended to all visiting here!!

A great place to visit if you are in kolkata. Perfect for family and kids and for thise who are interested in art, history, geology and ancient culture. You need one complete day to visit this Museum. The gates open at 11:00A.M and after visiting this you can also go to the new market fir shopping, its very close to the museum. You can also do some street shopping but I do not recommend that because the rates are comparatively higher if you want to shop for very cheap rates and want to buy decent quality stuff I will recommend you to go to khidirpore fancy market. It is very close to Alipore zoo.

The Indian museum is a great place to visit with family. It is the largest museum in Asia and likewise has lots of interesting historical and scientific treasuries. However the main attraction - Zoological department of Mammals was closed. It consists of skeletons of dinosaurs and mammals which pretty clearly is the primary attention seeker. I dont know why it was closed but it should be opened as people really look forward to it. All other things were amazing, theres even 2 water filters inside the property. However, some visitors unhygienically spit in the water cooler and try to wash their sweaty faces there which is puke worthy.
