This temple is situated in the old city area which can be accessed from gangavesh or mahadwar road by walk. The inner sanctum of temple is located approx 25-30 feet down the earth where only one person can go at a time using steps. When theres a flood in panchganga river, which is approx 1.5 km away, water appears around the shivalinga as well and the linga is covered by water completely when flood level touches the fish mark carved on shivaji bridge (called as macchindri. This is the mystery of this place

It is deep in underground so called as kholkhandoba

Khol Khandoba temple is located at north-west side on kolhapur city, near the shaniwar peth. From the outside one sees a big dome . One has to go down about 20 to 25 feet, into the temple to reach the deity. The deity in the temple is a Linga. The main door in the temple was at the East side and upper part is in round shape. It is said that this temple was built in theperiod Mughals emperors nearabout 13th to 14th century. There is a Shivlinga deep in the ground. The internal space was about a hundred square feet.
