Holy place
Kotitirtha templeThere is a large lake near Shahumil, east of Kolhapur city, in which there is an old temple called Kotitirtha.Kotitirtha is known as one of the most scenic places in Kolhapur. There is a small temple of Lord Shiva in this lake and it is connected to the earthen embankment near the city of the lake by a narrow earthen filling. The temple is simple and does not have any special carvings. An idol of Lord Ganesha is carved at the entrance of the temple. On the front side is a recently built mandapa and in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple is Shivpindi. On the south side of the temple is Ambrai, where the Samadhi is located in a small room below the main living room of a building built by Narayandas Maharaj in 1894. There is a small ghat in front of the building and its steps lead to the water of the pond. There are many stories as to why this area got the name Kotitirtha. According to a story, when the demons conquered the gods, Mahalakshmi ran to the aid of the gods and killed one crore demons here, hence the name Kotitirtha. It was Mahalakshmi who established the Kotishwar Linga here. According to another story, Pushkareshwar built this shrine in Karvirat. It was called Kotitirtha or Pushkartirtha as Bhanuraja spent the sins of his Kotijanmi hereSome people take the first darshan of Kotitirtha when they come to Kolhapur, thinking that this shrine is Papanashini and they are superior to all other shrines. There used to be a temple of Mahalakshmi here but it is also believed that it was destroyed in the earthquake. The Swami Samarth temple near Kotitirtha is quiet and picturesque.
