The citys premier tennis stadium which had been around for more than 2 decades, used to house the popular Chennai Open ATP tennis tournament. The premises is well maintained and clean. The courts are available to the public upon booking. Coaching is also offered by private and SDAT coaches during mornings and evenings. The stadium complex also has a well laid tarmac pathway which many use for morning and evening walks. A fee of around Rs. 118 per month is levied for people using the premises as a walking path. Parking is available for both 2 and 4 wheelers, however it can get crowded during peak hours. A pleasant and quiet experience during non tournament days.

Amazing stadium! Wonderful facilities! Chennai open attracts very good crowd and is a great ATP tournament. I have seen 2 Chennai open final matches here. Wonderful parking facility, great location since it is in Nungambakkam. Doubles up as a wonderful morning walk facility too. I personally used to have regular walks during 2013-2015 time period. There is also a volleyball training center for Tamil Nadu state junior team in the campus.

This is a green and serene place for morning walkers and joggers with a track around the court which is roughly 400m...tennis coaching happens here in the practice courts outside...you can walk/ jog in well shaded paths and watching tennis practice going on in one side. Ample car and scooter parking available

Kudos to all those who are involved in maintaining it. It is well maintained and also easily accessible to public if one wants to learn tennis. Maintaining at its current level of cleanliness and quality (of the courts, lighting) under Government bureaucracy and corruptions is by no means a simple task.

Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu Tennis Stadium, commonly known as SDAT Stadium, sometimes also called Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, is located in Nungambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, and played host for the Chennai Open ATP Tennis championships held in the first week of January from 1996 to 2017. The stadium was built in 1995 by the Government of Tamil Nadu on the occasion of South Asian Federation Games held in Chennai that year. The stadium has been the venue for Indian Open tennis tournament annually since 1997. The stadium witnessed some dramatic scenes in 1998 when legends like Boris Becker and Patrick Rafter took part in the then named Goldflake Open. Rafter went on to win the tournament.

I am currently learning tennis from here , the govt officials are very weird and occupy most of the court space . The classes never start on time and the coaches are usually never there . The stadium walk way is well maintained , how ever the hardcourts are poorly designed , during rainy season the courts retains rain water . The wall practice court is damaged and they havent bothered repairing it for the past 5 years !

Chennai Fans missed a Celebration like event in the City.Very important thing is its the first ATP tournament of the New Year and many including Stansilas Wawrinka shared their experience by quoting Starting Chennai Open on a Successful Note will end up with Grand Slam Victory and I love Chennai Crowd - Thank You Chennai.

Worst guy Ramana (calls himself a coach). He is there only to suck money from the people who are joining with interest in tennis. He refused take someone in because the candidate did not buy racket from him. He is only money minded and is not interested in teaching tennis. Theres no way Chennai will have more stars from Tennis thro government. Shame on SDAT to have such cheap, money sucking ***hole as coach.

With the growing popularity and appeal of Tennis, associations were being messaged all over the world for the orderly development of the game. In the year 1920, at Lahore, the All India Tennis Association came into being. Six years later, in 1926, the Madras Provincial Lawn Tennis Association was inaugurated, with Hon. Justice E.E. Mack as its first President. The Madras Cricket Club, Madras United Club, and the South Indian Athletic Association were the first amongst the clubs to get affiliated to the Association. The other prominent clubs that played a key role in the development of tennis were Madras Gymkhana Club, Mylapore Club, Cosmopolitan Club, and Clubs in Ooty, Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore. These Clubs, apart from providing tennis facilities to their members, regularly conducted tournaments that attracted large enthusiastic crowds. In the 1940’s, The Madras Corporation made available public courts in the celebrated Egmore Stadium, where all-important tournaments were conducted and regular coaching was also imparted to young players. Madras played a key role in tennis nationally by staging important Davis Cup matches, national level tournaments such as National Hard Court Championships and National Junior Championships, and ITF Satellite and Challenger events. Several international players participated in these tournaments, amongst who were many Wimbledon Champions such as Frank Sedgeman, Jaroslav Drobny, John Newcombe, Neale Fraser, Roy Emerson, Alex Olmedo, and Tony Trabert. In the 1930s, all-time greats like Bill Tilden and Henri Cochet played exhibition matches in Chennai.
