A museum visit which will live long in my memory. Displays from Ancient Babylon and Assyria, deconstructed and moved to Berlin brick by brick, simply amazing viewing them knowing the history behind them and relating them to the stories from the Old Testament. This is certainly a must visit to a museum which was hidden for so long behind the Berlin Wall.

The Pergamon Altar (Altar/Temple) is the most magnificent of the ancient artifacts brought from Anatolia. It is so magnificent that it did not fit in any museum structure, so it led to the construction of a private museum with the same name in Berlin in 1930. The main works exhibited in the museum are The entrance to the Pergamon Athena Temple, the Athena statue and the Aleppo room. The remains of this magnificent building were taken to Prussia of that time by the German engineer Carl Humann in the 1870s. Today, it is exhibited in the Pergamon (Bergama) Museum in Berlin and is visited by thousands of people every year.

The museum is impresive, but till 2024 the Pergamon part is in rebuild, so i suggest visiting Panorama too (the museum with incredible 360 display of pergamon) located next to museuminsel. The Pergamonmuseum itself has big thingslike Milet and the gate of Ishtar, that are breathtaking (both on photos). Go Visit

You must reserve a time slot, even with the Berlin Museum Pass. I would not recommend reserving the last time slot (from 17.15) as the museum closes at 18.00 and it is not physically possible to see the whole museum during that time. I was quite disappointed that I could not see half of the exposition due to this issue. The time slots get booked very quickly so reserve your time a few days before.

No museum is a bad place to be, but some museums are just More than others. The Pergamum Museum is a must-visit place for travelers and residents of Berlin alike. The archaeological finds in there are astonishing with the Ishtars gate as the cornerstone of them. The Islamic art section is also magnificent and holding a vast range of not only items, but also parts of houses and calligraphy works. The only one thing that took a little from the experience was that the items were not matched to their descriptions numerically, which made it a bit hard to read

The Pergamonmuseum is nothing short of a wonder in itself. Its rooms are overflowing with some of the world’s most impressive, long buried, treasures. The museum encompasses the vast history of the Ancient East, with collections that can not be experienced elsewhere. The museum is named after the Pergamon Altar, a Hellenistic masterpiece of white stone architecture. The imposing structure invites you to walk the steps of 2000 years of history and behold its intricacies close-up. But don’t get lost in this wonder for too long, as there are many more under the museum’s roof. Artefacts have been gathered from Iran, Asia Minor, Egypt and the Caucasus, and these worlds have been recreated for you to explore within the Pergamonmuseum.

One of my favorite museums in Berlin. I was not expecting museums like this in Berlin. The museum is mostly about Islamic Art, showcasing artifacts from royals to peasants. The Ishtar Gate from the Babylon period is something you have to go and see. By the time the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum on Museum Island (today the Bodemuseum) had opened in 1904, it was clear that the edifice was not large enough to host all of the art and archaeological treasures being excavated under German supervision. Excavations were underway in the areas of ancient Babylon, Uruk, Assur, Miletus, Priene and ancient Egypt, and objects from these sites could not be properly displayed within the existing German museum system. Wilhelm von Bode, director of the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, initiated plans to build a new museum nearby to accommodate ancient architecture, German post-antiquity art, and Middle Eastern and Islamic art.

The Pergamon Museum (German: Pergamonmuseum) is situated on the Museum Island in Berlin. The building was designed by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann and was constructed over a period of twenty years, from 1910 to 1930. The Pergamon Museum houses monumental buildings such as the Pergamon Altar, the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, the Market Gate of Miletus reconstructed from the ruins found in Anatolia, as well as the Mshatta Facade. The museum is subdivided into the antiquity collection, the Middle East museum, and the museum of Islamic art. It is visited by approximately 1,135,000 people every year[citation needed], making it the most visited art museum in Germany (2007), and is one of the largest in the country. The comprehensive plan for Museum Island includes an expansion of the Pergamon Museum, with connections to the Neues Museum, Bodemuseum, Alte Nationalgalerie and a new visitor centre, the James Simon Gallery. An architectural competition in 2000 was won by Oswald Mathias Ungers from Cologne. The Pergamon Museum will be redeveloped according to his plan, which controversially proposes large alterations to buildings unchanged since 1930. The current entrance building in the Court of Honor will be replaced with a fourth wing, and an underground walk (Archäologische Promenade, archeologic walk) will connect four of the five museums.
