Beautiful restaurant located upstairs and downstairs. We sat downstairs and had lots of room. We were seated and our drinks and food (3 courses) were complete in just over an hour. There was a lot of pate but I like it so not an issue but if you want a starter to share, this is a good option. The linguini was delicious for me and my other half said the duck was amazing. A nice lemon cheesecake to finish off too which was very lemony- as it should be! Staff were attentive and very polite and friendly
Went last minute on a recommendation and we were impressed. Monday night being a little quiet as there were only a few tables dining and the ambience was great, we were seated quickly and with a smile. Our service was interactive and professional, but we were left to enjoy our meal once food was served only returning between courses to serve us more wine. The food was incredible, rustic as a description and the wine list excellent. Its as expensive as you want it to be with the quality to match. Nice authentic decor with a modern twist, clean and well managed. Toilets were of high quality. Theres both up and downstairs, my preference would be upstairs next time for variety. Book if you plan to go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday youll be eating elsewhere otherwise. Couldnt recommend enough. Great for special occasions. A little french jewel in York.
This intimate French restaurant made for a lovely first experience in York. We were seated and served promptly, and taken good care of all the while. My husband and I ordered the two-course set lunch special. Our first courses both involved cheese, done in delicious forms: mine with soft fresh goat cheese on crustini with salad, while my husband had fritot de brie. My main was pork shank on mash, in a sea of a cider-based gravy. The meat looked daunting but the bone was sizable, and the amount of meat ended up perfect. It flaked right off the bone. With that gravy, it was incredible. My husband had the steak and fries, all well cooked and tasty.
Rustique in Castlegate York has become a firm family favourite but this was our first visit to Rustique Lendal. We rate the Castlegate because of the quality of the French cuisine, excellent service and comfortable location. So how did Lendal compare? The décor and ambience are just as good. The interior is warm and welcoming: very atmospheric, comfortable and relaxing. The service was superb too. We had booked in at Castlegate but Lendal was nearer, so we popped in and asked if we could cancel the Castlegate reservation and place one instead at Lendal. The staff were only too willing to sort it all out on the phone. The service at dinner was friendly and very efficient. We wanted a bottle of sauvignon blanc and the waitress suggested the house wine and alternatives. On her advice we went for the New Zealand bottle at £22.95 which was crisp and refreshing. A good choice. The set menu is always extremely attractive at £16.95 for three courses. There is plenty of choice, the portion sizes are perfect, and the food is always great. It was so again. I like the pate for starters and always make a beeline for the delicious sea bass. My daughter raves at the French onion soup which has melted cheese and croutons in it and the steak and frites for main course. She recommends caramel pancake for dessert but I much prefer the massive dish of crème brule. The bill came in at a very fair £89.55 for the three of us.
Went on a sat night, table booked for 19:00 went a bit early, and table was all ready. When we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome. Sat at our table and started looking through the menu. The waitress took our drinks order. (No draught lager/beer, just bottles). We looked through the menu, and decided to get the £17.95 three course deal. (Bad choice for the wife, as she was stuffed at the end). Food was amazing, service was fantastic. Staff all on hand and very attentive. Food was bursting with flavors. Also the portion size with the deal was very reasonable. If you have a big appetite, just order a few extras for the table. (Chips, green beans, or my favorite. Dauphinoinse potatoes. We will be back, my first 5 stars.
Reliably nice food. Reasonably good service. Just under £35 for 2 courses for 2. I found a hair on my lemon slice but it was promptly whisked away by the waitress. For the starter, my paté was lovely. Could have done with some vegetables (other than your neighbourhood potato) in the main courses though - you will have to order these separately. My confit de canard was done well with a delicious sauce and the dauphinoise potatoes creamy and moreish.Food and service couldve been slightly tweaked to make it a 5 for me but I was sufficiently happy with it all and the price point is good so overall a 4.
Excellent food wine and service as always. Prices very reasonable for such a high standard of food. We book here everything we go to york
Lovely friendly restaurant. Very well managed & felt very safe.Food was great as usual apart from my steak was not as tender as it usually is. In all the years weve been going this is the first time my steak hasnt been great. My husbands & my friends were perfect. When they asked me if there was a problem with the food & I explained my steak was tough they handled it brilliantly & I couldnt have asked for more.Well done well definitely be back!
Came here to celebrate our would-be wedding day. Amazing food, great prices and nice cozy atmosphere. My personal favourite of York.
Have been going to Rustique for years. The set menu offers outstanding value for money and the quality is excellent. Wines are reasonable in price. Authentically French. Often busy so booking is advised.
The food was to die for, I had the duck and my girlfriend had the steak, I have never tasted duck like it before in my life, it fell straight off the bone, we both had the baked brie for starters which again was unbelievable, and a very fair price at £17 for a starter and a main. Will definitely visit again next time were in york.
I had visited Rustique Lendal for my graduation meal in July and would highly recommend for the food and general service from wait staff, however the supervising/management could do with a little more politeness and improvement. The food was absolutely divine and completely affordable, with the set menu expansive and proving hard to make a decision due to the amount of choice (everything sounded so good!) Myself and my family had an amazing time, though it wouldve been perfect if we didnt feel rushed due to panicked staff and a very pushy supervisor/manager. He was quite rude when we turned up a little late (5-10 minutes and we called in advance to say we were going to be a little late due to the business of the graduation) and kept coming to the table to remind us that we needed to be off the table in X amount of minutes. It felt like a countdown and made us feel like we could not sit and enjoy our meal that was celebrating a big milestone in my life. By the time it came for us to leave there were plenty of tables free and unreserved and they were able to sit the party that were booked for our table after us anyway, so it felt like that rushing and pushing of our party had been completely unnecessary! Apart from this uncomfortable treatment we were able to fully enjoy the delicious food and give high commendations to both kitchen and front of house wait staff for making this a very special meal. I especially recommend the Brie starter, the mushroom starter and the goats cheese starter, as well as the confit duck leg, pork shank and mash or steak main courses. These are just a few that my family selected and fully enjoyed.I also returned when visiting York to visit coursemates and had another great experience, with food still delicious and service visibly relaxed and less stressed due to a lower level of customers. Pictured is the Baked Brie starter with fruit jam and balsamic drizzle.
Absolutely fab service and amazing food. Had rump lamb with dauphinoise potaoes was amazing and hubby had beef bourguignon. Lovely lovely. Will be back. X 💗
Had the set menu for dinner (mussels + steak), and was quite disappointed. The bread was not fresh (shameful for a French restaurant), the fries tasted straight out of McDonald’s and the steak was also quite underwhelming (tender, but lacking in seasoning). The set menu is good value for the size if the portions (hence 3 stars), but not for quality/flavour of the food.
Delicious food served by friendly staff. French onion soup to die for and such generous portions. Would recommend to any visitor to York!
Excellent food. Atmosphere is nice and the personnel is extremely friendly. Highly recommended!
Good wholesome food at a decent price. One of the best places in York centre for a good plate of food.
Weve had a number of meals at this restaurant and never been disappointed and again a great meal.
Used to come here often. But not anymore. After telling the waiter about my steak tasting a bit off, he was rude and told me that there was no problem. Wonder how he can be so sure of himself without tasting it. Also, a little bit of politeness could have been helpful. Thought I was a tourist?
The food was fantastic! Service wonderful with food arriving quickly; plus very reasonably priced from the set menu. Beautiful setting, and well set up alongside gov guidelines. A must visit when in York.
One of my favourite restaurants in York, definitely try the onion soup and pretty much anything on the set menu!
Food was lovely and the staff were great. Although some tables were set up where people were sat closer than a metre. Felt a little unsafe at times re covid regs
Great restaurant with a good French atmosphere, the toilets were really clean and the dining area was great, food was excellent with a great choice, they did get our order slightly wrong, however this was not a bad thing as I needed to avoid fries anyway
Brilliant food and service from a dedicated team doing their very best in very wierd times. Can not fault them at all. Thank you guys and gals for a very lovely evening
Great value for the set lunch. Classic French dishes. Cosy atmosphere
Nice food. Good service. Not much in the way of vegan/vegetarian. I suppose that is traditionally French?!
Very nice food in a pleasant setting. Worth a visit
Beautiful French food in a lovely atmosphere. Pleasant service, plenty of choice. Good quality and value. Teabags dish delicious and pal loved the lamb koftas. Onion soup highly recommended and a good wine list. Booking is advisable.

Good atmosphere and great food and great time with girls ,😀🍷🍻🍹
Brilliant fantastic food great staff
Excellent food set menu brilliant. Only thing that spoilt our meal was my girlfriends rose wine was rank.
Had a excellent meal there been before and will be back
Rustique is my go-to place for a high quality dinner at excellent prices. I have been bringing friends and family for over 15 years to this little bistro. The fixed menu is brilliant value. Under £20 for 3 courses and reasonable portions. The service is always brilliant and the staff efficient. They take great pride in delivering good service. Was a little disappointed as a solo diner was relegated to a table on a narrow corridor which led to an office. I think the restaurant industry should up its game on how they treat Solo diners. They may be missing a trick.
Visited after reading the reviews and was not disappointed . We had the 2 course set menu I had the garlic mushrooms then the steak and fries both were spot on and the portion size was good expected them to be smaller but they were perfect was full on the 2 course meal . We had booked our table for Saturday which I would recommend doing as got busy
Great food and the set menu represents great value
Lovely easy going restaurant, tasty food , friendly staff, enjoyed it.
Love this restaurant. The food is delicious, and the service is always great. We always have a great time here.
Very good set price menu. Lots of good choices. Prices were great and food was cooked well. We had the duck and the pork shank. Both were moist and fell off the bone. The decor was very French and overall experience was wonderful. Good food, good value, good service. Highly recommend.
Always a good meal great service.
Consistently good experience at either Rustique locations. Ive only ever been upstairs for lunch but it is such amazing value for the portion and quality of food. Staff are very helpful and friendly. With so many chains in York this is always a go to f9r a good meal.
Really lovely food. Priced very reasonable. Would use again
Brilliant - went for Christmas Day one of the best meals I have ever had!!! Loved it all the food was perfect and the staff very attentive. Menu was of a good choice and brilliant value for money. Everyone loved it even the more picky eaters of us. Thank you!!!!
Very nice restaurant. Food choices to carer for a large party. The set menu was a great price and didnt skimp on the quality. Beefburger with blue cheese was amazing.
It was my first time trying French cuisine and it was very good. Food felt very harty and served quickly. Set menu is definitely a good value
Food excellent, service excellent, ambiance excellent! Govt £10 off per person scheme prevented bank manager from having a hernia.
Great food . Friendly staff and helpful. Value for money love the French onion soup and lovely steak and mushroom sauce.
Nice food and friendly helpful staff. Met an old friend and just wanted to talk. They left us to it and looked after us well. Would certainly go back ahead.
Cosy venue, nicely lit. Prompt friendly service. I was with my son, brother and mother. We all really enjoyed all the dishes including the desserts. Delicious meals all round!

Excellent food and generally excellent service. The food was delicious and the staff knew about gluten free requirements and advised what I could eat as I dont eat meat. Very reasonably priced
We had our work Christmas meal here - and we all could not have been happier with the food. Its really really well priced and the portions are of a good size (you will be full after the meal). The food is really tasty - and the service was brilliant =) Highly recommended if you are visiting York =)
Rustique Bistro is a French Restraunt serving high quality tasty food in a very pleasant bistro style environment. We visit regularly and are never disappointed. The food is always very good and well presented and served by friendly and enthusiastic staff. The quality and choice is excellent and the wine choices are also very good. and the prices are very competitive with set menus or Ala carte being available. The place is always busy so booking is recommended.
Food fantastic, after spending a few hours shopping in York, worth trying but book
Delicious lunch, freshly baked bread with garlic mushrooms and delicious calves liver with mash and delicious sauce. Excellent service, great menu recommendations from the waiters good wines, good atmosphere. Thank you
Incredible atmosphere, fine wine selection, delicious, rustic, wholesome food. impeccable service; sent a french onion soup back to the kitchen because it was too salty for my taste, waitress came back with a new one made in 2 minutes that was perfect. overall great quality, perfect for a dinner date, family gathering, or just about any occasion. reasonably priced and central location too.
Excellent again loved it!
Good menu choices and very reasonable wine list. Service was well timed so you werent waiting but werent rushed either. Would happily go again
Brilliant service and the food was brilliant worth every penny! Visited many times and they can keep their excellent standard.
Fantastic place, really good food at a good price. Very friendly staff and good ambience. Well be eating here every time were in York and want something to eat.
Best French food in York.
Really enjoyed a family pre-theatre meal here.Very loud downstairs once it gets busy - but that was our only criticism other than the slight difficulty in getting the waiters attention for drinks - but no doubt connected.Steaks were excellent, and whole table was great value on the fixed price menu.
Fabulous evening celebration for a friends retirement brilliant food as always.
A lovely place for a meal with great food and service
Loved it! Every course absolutely delicious and fabulous value for money! Made for a memorable birthday treat!
A real gem. Recommended by taxi driverThis french restaurant has a set menu which was great value for money and authentic. The French waitress was brilliant warm and helpful. Do not miss out!
Very good food good service. Food was good especially the steak. No view of the river
The waiter ran after us and returned my bag. Also the food and wine were delicious. Cant recommend it highly enough.
Delicious! My husband and I chose this restaurant for our anniversary dinner while in York, and it did not disappoint! We very much enjoyed our food, the atmosphere, and we were pleased with the attentiveness of our waiters.
Unashamedly French bistro cooking in a friendly setting. Varied menu of lovely dishes. Great for lunch and dinner, and good for both parties and more intimate meals.
Excellent food, friendly staff, nice venue and the prices and portion sizes are very good.
Small upstairs but lots of space downstairs. In a great location, can get busy so would advise booking. Fantastic food, never been disappointed. Do a great set menu with lots of choice and options which is good value.
From arrival through dessert the service and good were exemplary. I started with a goat cheese and greens tartlette for which the pastry was perfectly baked. I had lamb and it was perfectly cooked. The potatoes tasted like so much more than buying old potatoes. The final bill for two people with 5 drinks and dessert was under 70 pounds, but three experience best many restaurants at over 100 pounds.
Amazing food & service at a very reasonable price. Booking is essential though.
Highly Recommend, infact so much so that I would say it was one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. The food was amazing.
Very tasty food. Went with group of 20+ and all liked their selection from menu. Good range of drinks too
