Stunning temple built with pandiyan king along the banks of Noyyal river. Must visit place in Tirupur. Situated in a area surrounded by agricultural fields.
Very Pleasant and peacefully blessed The Lord 🙏

Sugreeswarar temple – TirupurThis temple is about 8 kilometers from Tirupur in a small village called Sarcar Periyapalayam (S.Periapalayam). This is an ASI maintained temple. The temple has a lot of open space The vimanas (sudhai) seems to be have been recently restored. Very few people visit the temple. It is maintained very well. The main entrance is facing south. The main deity is Siva called Sugreeswarar (Sukreeswarar). Ambal is called Avudainayaki ( Aavudainayaki). As per thalapuranam Sugreeva worshipped here and hence the name Sugreeswarar.Sugreeswarar - EntranceThe compound wall is tall and recently rebuilt. There is a big Arasamaram (fig tree) before the entrance providing a good ambiance. As we enter Vinkayar sannidhi is the first one. Next is Amman and Siva. The main deity Sugreeswarar in the form of a linga is facing east. There are two entrances to this shrine facing south and east. Surprisingly only southern side has stone steps. The eastern side doesn’t have any original structure. It has only a recently built iron grilled steps. Since the shrine is about 4 feet above ground we can conclude that eastern entrance was not used by devotees in earlier time (sorry for the poor photography). The garbhagraha is wide and well-lit so that we can have nice darshan. On the beams we can see images of Sugreeva and Airavatham doing pooja to the lord. The Lord has two Nandis in front of him. As per thalapurana Nandi used become a live bull in the night and graze crops near the temple. An angry farmer cut off the ear during one night so that he can identify the bull later in the morning. None of the bulls in the village had cut off ears. But the villagers found the right ear of the nandi broken and blood oozing. The villager repented and removed the broken one and replaced with newer one. The older one was kept aside. However, to the surprise of the villagers, the next day original nandi was back in its position. The villagers decided to leave it in its place. The Nandi nearer the lord is older and has damaged ear. Whatever may be purana, to me it appears they tried to replace the damaged one, but for some reason they could not remove older one and left it as it is.On the outer walls of this shrine there a few beautifully carved images.. The designs on walls are simple and beautiful, especially the window with canopy . The interior of the canopy is carved like the interiors of a hut/tiled house. The Ambal – Avudainayaki is very beautiful. Surprisingly the sannidhi is on the right side of the lord, which I am told is rare. Another surprise is Nandi in front of Amman also. This sannidhi seems to be later additionThere several old sculptures probably retrieved in and around the temple kept inside this sannidhi most likely by ASI. Clearly they should be very old. Most of them are damaged. However even in such condition they are beautiful especially Vishnu. The thalavirutcham seems to be Vilva (There was no board, just my guess). The tree seems to be really very old.Sthalavritcham? - Bilva/VilvaOn the whole it is a fantastic temple, plain, simple, least crowded and well maintained. Unfortunately or fortunately many people in Tirupur seems to be unaware of it. I have to thank Prof.V.P.Parthasarathy, HOD IT and Shri.Rajaraman Sysadmin of Angel College of Engg and Technology, Tiruppur for helping and accompanying me to have the darshan of the lord.
Must visit placeIts older than Thanjai Periya Koil

Sugreeswarar temple: This temple is situated close to Uthukuli in a village called Sarkar Periyapalayam. It is around 8 Kms from Tirupur. The old name of this place is Kurakkuthali. The main deities are Shri Sugreeswarar and Shri Aavudayanayaki. The Lord is called Sugreeswarar as the King of Kishkinta, Sugreevan is believed to have worshipped here. The name Kurakkuthali is perhaps indicating the worship by a Kurangu ( monkey ). Indra’s elephant Iravatham also had worshipped here. Sundarar had visited this place and sang thevaram on this Lord. This temple is over 800 years old. Unfortunately, it is not known even to many in Tirupur and hence the number of devotees visiting this place, is few. Only on important days like Sivarathri, Pradosham etc, crowd is seen. Despite this, the maintenance is taken care and is under the control of the Archealogical Department. The stone used for construction appeared to differ from the normal granite and it glows golden yellow during sun set. The temple is constructed in the Pandyan style with later additions which are perhaps from the Chozha dynasty.Lord is facing east. There are two entrances to the shrine- south and east. Only the South is having originally constructed steps. Only recently, there are grilled steps put on the eastern side. The Garba Gruha is well lit and one can have a nice darshan. On the beams of the shrine, we can see the sculpture of an elephant ( iravatham ) and monkey ( Sugreevan ) praying to the Lord. Similarly we see another sculpture where a peacock is doing Pooja. There are five lingams in this temple- one inside the main shrine, three outside the temple and one is invisible ( Sukshma Roopa). There are two Nandis in front of the Lord. There is a story behind this. Earlier, there was a live Nandi ( bull ) in front of the Lord. During the nights, it used to eat away the crops in the nearby field. The affected farmer caught hold of the bull and cut off its right ear so that the next day he could identify the owner of the bull. Surprisingly, when he checked all the bulls in the village, none of them had damaged ear. When the villagers went to the temple, they found that the Nandi in front of the Lord had damaged ear with blood oozing. They realized that it was the Lord’s greatest devotee who came in the form of a bull. Since the Nandi was damaged, they had replaced it with another Nandi. The day after the installation they found that the old Nandi came back to its original place! They decided to leave it as such.Generally Ambal sannadhis are on the left of the Lord. Here Aavudayanayaki sannadhi is on the right. There is a Nandi in front of Ambal also! Another unique thing is the absence of Deepasthamba ( Pole for lighting lamps ) which is normally found in Kongunadu temples. Those having warts on their bodies, pray here and offer Pepper to the Lord and a part of it is taken home and eaten along with the food for eight days. This gives relief to the affected person. Another unique thing about this temple is that the rays of the Sun fall on the Lord during the conjunction of Uttarayanam and Dakshinayanam ( around Jan 14th and July 15th ). ( Note: Photos and some of the inputs were sourced from various web sites ).
Temple is open now... Visiting hours all days 7am to 12pm and 4:30pm to 7:30pm.
