On the right side of the palace there is garden with variety of trees with lakes near to it.. Wonderful place to spend time.. Better to wear shoes here as this is large property..

A hidden gem. Not to be missed if you are in ThrissurThis place is worth a visit if you are in Thrissur. Decently preserved palace and some interesting artifacts. I would not consider it great in terms of the contents in the museum, but still very good. The main palace house artifacts, mainly from the royal family. There is a separate building that house stone age tools etc.Apart from the museum, there is also a heritage garden that is an oasis of greenery in the city. One boundary of the garden is ‘chira’, the pond.As of writing this (May 2019), the entry fee is Rs 20/- for adults and Rs 5/- for children. For using mobile camera, you must pay Rs 10/-. Photography is not permitted inside the museum though. However, there is plenty to photograph outside the museum. I guess tickets are not issued after 4.30 PM.A special mention of the staff there. When I visited, they were very helpful and courteous. One person suggested that my parents take a different staircase since that would be less taxing for them. There was a lady who explained the stone artifacts very enthusiastically. There is decent parking available outside.Definitely worth a visit if you are in Thrissur.

The interiors of the palace, because of its unique construction offer comfortable and pleasant staying conditions irrespective of the prevailing weather conditions.Sakthan Thampuran Palace once belonged to the Perumpadappu Swaroopam, the ruling dynasty of Kochi. This was the centre of power of King Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, who ruled Kochi between AD 1790 and 1805. His rule was regarded as the Golden Era of the Cochin dynasty. The palace is close to the Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur. Saktan Thampuran is credited with the introduction of the Thrissur Pooram festival, an annual festival in May with teams representing the Parmekavu Bhagavathy temple and Tiruvambadi Krishna temple competing for primacy in front of the Vadakkumnathan temple with elephants, percussion, drums, fireworks, etc. The palace was once known as Vadakkechira Kovilakam and it was the king who renovated it into the present form. The palace keeps with it the historical remnants of some important events like the visit of Tipu Sultan with his army. The last member of the royal family to reside here was Rama Varma Bharathan Thampuran, a grand nephew of Chowwarayil Theepetta Veliyathampuran. The landmark it that, you will find it at the entrance; 3 graves of 3 different Kings; 2 Naga statues and the main palace. In the entrance near the main gate, you will find 2 gun barrels. Once you enter, you will see the chariot ridden by the royal family. You will find Chola coins and Roman coins. The trade between them is way too old and the records of those got lost. The house has an open terrace in the middle, the way old Indian homes are designed. The staff too are helpful. You cannot take photos inside the palace. There is a big treasure box in the center of the house and it should have been used to store tons of gold and ornaments. You will end up in the beautiful pond behind and dont forget to click pics there. Its total green inside and lovely weather.Excellently maintained. Heard that the royal family gave it to the archaeological survey of India and they are maintaining it.Worthy for 30r rupees entrance ticket.
