National Martyrs’ Memorial situated at Savar, about 35 km north-west of Dhaka, symbolises the valour and sacrifice of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh.A national competition was held for the design of the project in June 1978. Among the fifty-seven competitors Architect Syed Moinul Hossains design proposal was selected. The main monument is composed of seven isosceles triangular planes each varying in size in its height and base. The highest one has the smallest base while the broadest base has the lowest height. The planes are folded at the middle and placed one after another. The highest point of the structure reaches 150 feet. This unique arrangement of the planes has created a structure that seems to change its configuration when viewed from different angles. The architect has used concrete for the monument while all the other structures and pavements of the complex are made of red bricks. Use of different materials has added to the gravity of the monument.Side view of National Martyrs’ Memorial The whole complex is spread over an area of 34 hectares (84 acres) which is again wrapped around by a green belt of 10 hectares (24.7 acre). Several mass-graves and a reflection water body are placed in front of the monument. Once one enters the complex through the main gate he or she can see the monument axially but to reach it one has to walk through different ups and downs of pavements and cross an artificial lake by a bridge-all these represent the struggle for independence. The project was constructed in three phases. The first one, began in 1972, involved in acquiring land and constructing road for the project at a cost of Tk 26 lacs. During the second phase, 1974-1982, Tk 3.77 crores were spent in order to build the mass-graves, helipad, parking space, pavements etc. In the third phase, began in August 1982, the main structure was built apart from the artificial lake, green belt, cafeteria, housing etc. The third phase required Tk 848.65 lacs. The Public Works Department of the Government of Bangladesh
The architecture is composed of seven pairs of triangular-shaped walls or prisms; the outermost pair being the shortest in height but widest in span, the inner pairs gradually change their aspect ratio and the innermost pair thus forms the peak point of the architecture. Each of these seven pairs of walls represents a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh, namely the Language Movement in 1952, the 1954 provincial election victory of the United Front in 1954, the Constitution Movement in 1956, the movement against the Education Commission in 1962, the Six point movement in 1966, the Mass Uprising in 1969, and finally the climactic event of the Independence War in 1971, through which Bangladesh became a separate independent sovereign state.

Absolutely beautiful place of Savar, Dhaka.
I love this Place i Was Bron hear
Good place, environment good.
National Memorial in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for todays Bangladesh. I am proud that I was born in a country like Bangladesh. I would like to say in the language of the poet: - Selfish Janam Maam I was born in this country, Selfish Janam Maam loves you and I was born in this country as if I die in this country
We must have heard the name of the Savar Memorial. It is one hundred and fifty feet high and sixty feet wide. It is a symbol of respect for the nation. One of its heights is the honor of a martyr. It is an achievement that can be measured but what stands for achievement is immeasurable. It is made of cement but blends with blood.
One of the most beautiful human made location of Bangladesh. Geographical place is also awesome. The pride of Bangladesh. Area is so big. If you want to take natural breathe you must have to come here. The security system is good. Its a very good place for family trip. If you have any feelings for the great martyrs of liberation war then in front of monument your eyes will teary for sure. Normally its a calm, solitary and safe place. But in occasion like Independent day, Victory day, Pahela Boishakh, Eid day and other occasional season it turns a bit crowded. People come here with their family and friends. I often go there. I love this place very much. Hope youll love too.

The National Memorial is located at Savar, 35 km northwest of Dhaka. The monument stands as a memorial to the great sacrifices and bravery of the great martyrs of the Bangladesh War of Independence. In 1986, a national design competition was organized for the purpose of building monuments. Architect Moinul Hossains design was selected from 57 contestants. The main building consists of seven triangular walls of unequal height and distinct foundations. The highest pillar is based on the lowest length, and the longest foundation is the lowest. The walls are angled by a fold in the middle and lined up one after the other. The highest point of the structure is 45.62 m high. The structure is arranged in such a way that it is viewed in different infrastructures from different angles.Side portrait, National MemorialThe architect used cement-stone concrete to build the main pillar, but he also used red brick to build other adjoining structures and pavements. The use of different elements has increased the seriousness of the main pillar. The entire complex is spread over 34 hectares (64 acres) of land. It is surrounded by another 10 hectares (24.6 acres) of green land. In front of the pillar are several mass graves and a reflecting pond. When entering through the main entrance, the pillar is visible along the axis of the entrance. But to reach the main altar, one has to cross several high and low areas, pavements and bridges built over an artificial lake, all of which mark the long struggle for independence. The project has been completed in three phases. The first phase started in 1982. Land acquisition and project roads were constructed at this stage at a cost of Tk. 26 lakhs. Between 1984-1982, in the second phase, construction of mass graves, helipads, parking lots, pavements, etc. cost Tk. In the third phase, which was completed in August 1982, the main pillar was constructed in addition to the artificial lake, adjacent green courtyard, cafeteria, housing, etc. The third phase cost 847.75 lakh rupees. The construction was supervised by the Public Works Department of the Government of Bangladesh. [M Shahidul Amin & M Zakiul Islam]
