The museum is located on Chatham road, an outskirt of the capital city of Port Blair.. The museum in the compound of the Chatham Saw Mill complex and great collection of wood based work and carvings that take our breath away with the intricate designing which is done on it.. A good museum to visit and see the excellent wooden furniture, carvings, statues, utensils and kitchen items and many more.. Museum shows all details about , why and how it was constructed, construction of bridge to connect the mill, damage done to mill during world war and various types of woods and its artifacts.. The pictorial history and the scenery of whole Andaman has well been presented here.. The overall information on Andaman and its different tribes has been depicted here well.. The museum is very small in space but collection is very good and interesting.. There is also a shop from where one can buy wooden articles.. Worth a visit..
Closed due to the Covid-19 situation but still can see from the outside.

Forest museum is located inside the premises of chatham saw mill, Chatham island, Port Blair. The museum showcases the history of the island and the saw mill. Toilets are also available.Relatively small but interesting nonetheless for history buffs.
I have visited there many times. This gallery contains handicraft products, idols, photographs of early days of Chatham Saw Mill and shows how the mill woks in those days. It was a nice experience.
Pre independence wood working machinery still in operation. Engineers will appreciate the indigenous technology..
Staff is not ok
Asias largest saw mill. You cant believe how much big this. Different units here....like bomb pit 1 and bonb pit 2 also a saw mill museum available here.
One of the major tourist attractions inside the compound of the Chatham saw Mill is a Museum showcasing the various timber resources of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Museum provides a vivid description of different kinds of forest activities since the British era with the help of scale models. It also displays many decorative pieces carved from wood.
This is a typical example of opportunistic tendencies. How can a saw mill be a tourist attraction? So you create museum? But then you are not making wood carvings, right? So buy few and put there. What else? So just put framed photographs and any objects you can lay hands on! Hurray, we have a museum! Now we can charge entry fee!Not worth the visit. Skip it.
Museum is so good so many old thing is there
Forest museum is situated in the Chatam Saw mill. It mostly has pictures of Andaman and the mill before the Tsunami, lots of wooden furniture and handcrafted pieces. Some illustrative models to help understand the working of the mill. Also has some barks of cancerous trees etc. If you have the time see it.

PORT BLAIRPort Blair is the largest town and a municipal council in Andaman district in the Andaman Islands and the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India. It lies on the east coast of South Andaman Island and is the main entry point to the islands. It is also the headquarters for the Indian district of Andaman, and the local administrative sub-division (tehsil), which is also called Port Blair. My girl friend is in andaman but i couldnt find her (xalxo)It is home to several museums and a major base for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard. It is also the headquarters of the Tri Services Command.n 1789 the government of Bengal established a penal colony on Chatham Island in the southeast bay of Great Andaman, named Port Blair to honour Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company. After two years, the colony moved to the northeast part of Great Andaman and was named Port Cornwallis after Admiral William Cornwallis. However, there was much disease and death in the penal colony, and the government ceased operating it in May 1796.In 1824 Port Cornwallis was the rendezvous of the fleet carrying the army to the First Anglo-Burmese War. In the 1830s and 1840s, shipwrecked crews who landed on the Andamans were often attacked and killed by the natives, alarming the British government. In 1855, the government proposed another settlement on the islands, including a convict establishment, but the Indian Rebellion of 1857 forced a delay in its construction. However, since the rebellion provided the British with a lot of new prisoners, it made the new Andaman settlement and prison an urgent necessity. Construction began in November 1857 at the renovated Port Blair, avoiding the vicinity of a salt swamp which seemed to have been the source of many of the old colonys problems. The penal colony was originally on Viper Island, named after Lieutenant Blairs vessel, The Viper. The convicts, mostly political prisoners, suffered life imprisonment at hard labor under cruel and degrading conditions. Many were hanged, while others died of disease and starvation. Between 1864 and 1867 a penal establishment was also built with convict labor on the northern side of Ross Island. These structures are now in ruins. As the Indian freedom movement continued to grow in the late 19th Century, an enormous Cellular Jail was constructed between 1896 and 1906 to house Indian convicts, mostly political prisoners, in solitary confinement. The Cellular Jail is also known as Kala Pani (translated as Black Waters), a name given to it due to the torture and general ill-treatment towards its Indian convicts. For a time during 1943 and 1944, Port Blair was the headquarters of the Azad Hind government under Subhash Chandra Bose.Although damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Port Blair survived sufficiently to act as a base for relief efforts in the islands.
