He was a born saint and had the honour of being the first Spiritual Successor of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer. Forty days before the demise of his great Pir-o-Murshid, Khwaja Qutubuddin was appointed by him as his recognised Khalifa (spiritual successor) at a formal ceremony at Ajmer, and was deputed to carry on the mission of the Chishti Order of Sufis in India with his headquarters at Delhi. His dargah in Mehrauli, the oldest dargah in Delhi, is the venue of his annual Urs.

The Oldest Dargah of Delhi, this is one of the most important pilgrimage place for Sufis. Kings, leaders, masses visit it.The Dargah of Qutubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki, a disciple of Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti of Ajmer and one of the most prominent Sufi Saint in India, has been revered by rulers, Kings, emperors and general masses. This is in Mehrauli area. Qutub Minar is named after him. Important rulers since 12th century have visited this Dargah and added important portions to it. Next to it is Moti Masjid, built by Farrukhsiyar. Gandhak ki baoli was added by Sher Shah, grand Gateway by Bahadur Shah Zafar and many more. There is an annual Urs at this Dargah. In modern times Mahatma Gandhi visited this Dargah and so did Indira Gandhi. Inside it is a bail which has gone into disuse. Being there is a spiritual and fulfilling experience.

Born in Osh, Kyrgystan in 1173 CE Syed Mohammad Bakhtiyar Al-Hussaini later became Hazrat Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki after establishing his own spiritual centre in Delhi. His was the disciple of the great Sufi saint Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer and was instrumental in establishing Sufism in Delhi. His disciple was Fariduddin Ganjshaker who in turn had a disciple, Nizamuddin Auliya.Located not too far within the Mehrauli village, one has to walk through many doors to reach the shrine. The Muslim shopkeepers are very helpful and teach the first time visitors what to do and what not to do. Shoes can be kept outside the Dargah for ₹10.Both men and women have to cover their heads, caps on rent are available though women should bring a scarf of a dupattaa along and wear body covering clothes which goes for men too. After a certain point women are not allowed to enter and only men and boys have access to pray at the shrine (grave) of the Sufi saint. The area is spic and span clean and though no one asks you to pay money there are certain men sitting in and around the shrine area asking for alms which can be used for distributing food to the poor. No receipt is provided but one can hope sitting in the same area as the shrine, I dont think they would be lying.Due to its more spacious setting or less crowds I did feel at peace here which Ive never felt at Nizamuddin. Was lucky to hear a Sufi Qawali being sung in praise of the Khwaja on a Sunday afternoon.Parking is very difficult in this area and one has to walk a bit and climb up a few steep steps, not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

The tomb of Qutb-ud-din Bakhtiyar Kaki in Mehrauli, is the oldest dargah in Delhi. He was the disciple of another famous sufi saint (perhaps even the most famous one in India) Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti whose dargah in Ajmer attracts a huge following of believers. Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti is known to have laid the foundation of Sufism. There are few places in a city like Delhi where various faiths merge so seamlessly. The ‘dargah’ is more than just a saint’s mausoleum. It is a religious sanctum alive with an ever-present throng of devotees to pray that their desires may come true.

Dargah Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA), MehrauliThe Dargah of the renowned saint, Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA), was completed in its present form only by 1944. Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) lived during the reign of Sultan Iltutmish (1210-36) and died in Delhi in 1235. He was a scholar and a disciple of Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti (RA), later becoming his successor in the order.Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki’s original name was Bakhtiyar and later on he was given the title Qutbuddin. Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki’s most noted follower and spiritual successor was Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj-e-Shakar (RA) whose disciple and successor in turn was Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya (RA). Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya’s successor, Hazrat Nasiruddin Chiragh-e-Dehli (RA), is generally considered the last of the great Chishtiya Sufis.Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) was born in 1173 in the small town of Aush in Central Asia. He established the Chishti Silsila (order) in Delhi as per the desire of his spiritual master, Hazrat Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti (RA). On his death, his grave became the site of a popular shrine and over a period of time the Dargah complex grew and was embellished by numerous rulers. The Dargah Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) is the oldest dargah in Delhi. It lies in a rectangular enclosure, beautifully embellished and surmounted by a dome. The western wall of the dargah is decorated with coloured floral tiles added by Aurangzeb. The northern gate of the Dargah was built in 1542 by Sheikh Khalil, a descendant of Hazrat Fariduddin Ganj-e-Shakar (RA) and the successor of Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA). Close to the Dargah’s Ajmeri Gate, to its left, is the Moti Masjid built in 1709 by Aurangzeb’s son, Bahadur Shah I.The Dargah complex extends along the palace complex of Zafar Mahal, with several entry points. Along the Hathi Gate to its east, lies a 19th century mosque and a Mughal tomb. Further ahead of the tomb to the west, lies the grave of Murad Bakht who was the wife of Shah Alam II. Beyond this open courtyard, the Dargah is entered through a gateway built in 1707. This gateway was earlier the main entrance of the Dargah. Further ahead of the gateway lie two graves built in 19th and 16th century, respectively. These graves belong to Khwaja Hasan Khaiyat and Saika Baba who were believed to be connected to the shrine in some way. To the north from the western gateway lies two grave enclosures of Nawabs of Jhajjar (19th century) and Mu’atmad Khan (17th century). Mu’atmad Khan was a famous eunuch in the court of Aurangzeb. The grave enclosure of Mu’atmad Khan also contains the graves of the family of Elahi Buksh and the last Mughals. Ahead and towards the east of this grave enclosure is a mosque of pre-Mughal period across which is the northern gateway of the Dargah leading to the northern courtyard. This was built by Maulana Fakhruddin in the 18th century. Many members of the Mughal family wished to be buried near the holy shrine of Hazrat Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA). Among those buried here are Mughal emperors Bahadur Shah I (r. 1707-12), Shah Alam II (r. 1759-1806), and Akbar II (r. 1806-37). Graves of Sheikh Nizamuddin Abulmoiyad and his mother (13th century), Maulana Fakhruddin (1807), and the grave of Abdul Aziz Bastami (late-19th to 20th century) also lie within the Dargah complex.

Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti is regarded as foremost preacher of Sufism among Sufis of India. Akbar, the Mughal emperor believed that it was his blessings which lead him a son and the heir for the Mughal throne. This belief of Akbar started a trend among the people. They also started visiting to the mazarof Chisti thinking that the mazar will fulfill their ambitions by offering prayers. Since, then this have become as a tradition. Many people sings about the glory and miracles associated with the Chisti. But very few are aware of the reality. Among Hindus hardly anyone knows about the real relation between PrithviRaj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of our country and Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti

Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki was the first sufi saint of Delhi. He is credited to establish and popularise Chishti Order in Delhi. He was a descendent of the Prophet Muhammad, descending through Hussain ibn Ali. Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki took oath of allegiance at the hands of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti, and received the khilafat and khirqa { Sufi Cloak } from him. He was the disciple and the spiritual successor of Moinuddin Chishti as head of the Chishti order, and the person to whom the Qutb Minar, Delhi is dedicated. Before him the Chishti order in India was confined to Ajmer and Nagaur. He played a major role in establishing the order securely in Delhi. His dargah located adjacent to Zafar Mahal in Mehrauli, and the oldest dargah in Delhi, is also the venue of his annual Urs festivities. He was called Kaki due to a keramat { miracle }attributed to him in Delhi. It is said that he asked his wife not to take credit from the local baker despite their extreme poverty. Instead he told her to pick up Kak { a kind of bread } from a corner of their house whenever needed. After this, his wife found that Kak miraculously appeared in that corner whenever she required it. The baker, in the meantime, had become worried whether the Khwaja had stopped taking credit due to being perchance angry with him. Accordingly, when the baker’s wife asked the reason from the Khwaja’s wife, she told her about the miracle of Kak. Although the Kak stopped appearing after this, from that day the people started referring to him as Kaki.
