Unfortunately corruption has found its way into the divine premises of Ramakishna Math Cossipore. The shop located at the entrance gate amplifies this through its unholy treatment of devotees. Devotees donating in higher denominations are given special boxes as a token of blessing unlike others who may not be financially capable - A stark contrast to what Ma Sarada preached her entire life.I dont think that the transformation in societal reforms as envisioned by Swami Vivekananda or even Lord Ramakrishna should be belittled by these unjust and inhumane practises.

This is an astoundingly serene place, run by the organisation named Ramkrishna Mission. Here, you can learn from A to Z about the life of the revered and acclaimed spiritual leader, Sri Ramkrishna. He used to stay at this place and held meetings with his beloved devotees. Today, this place has turned into a major centre for meditation and spiritual knowledge. You can visit here and garner substantial knowledge about the lives of Swami Vivekananda, Sarada Devi, Ramkrishna and a lot more. There is also a nice little library nestled inside the temple complex. Dont forget to see the flower nurseries. Its simply mesmerizing. The maintenance standards are truly praiseworthy. This pious place of worship, provides you inner peace, stability and calmness. Highly recommended to visit. 👍

The first Kalpataru Day, January 1, 1886, was an event of unusual consequence and meaning in the life of Ramakrishna and his followers.Ramakrishna was suffering from throat cancer at that time, and his health was declining. He and his closest followers had moved to a garden house in the northern Calcutta neighbourhood of Cossipore. January 1 was a relatively good day for him, and he took a walk in the garden. There, he asked one of his followers, Girish, a question he had often asked before, Who do you say that I am?  Girish responded that he believed that Ramakrishna was God incarnate, come to Earth out of mercy for humankind.Ramakrishna replied, What more shall I say? May you be awakened.Ramakrishna then entered an ecstatic state and began touching all of his followers. Those he touched reported experiencing a variety of new states of consciousness, including vivid visions. For one, Vaikuntha, the visions persisted and interfered with daily life, so that he feared that he might be going insane.

Beluṛ Maṭh (pronounced [ˈbeluɽ ˈmɔʈʰ]) is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is located on the west bank of Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal, India and is one of the significant institutions in Kolkata.[2] This temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement. The temple is notable for its architecture that fuses Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Buddhist art motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions. In 2003 Belur Math railway station was also inaugurated which is dedicated to Belur Math Temple. In January 1897, Swami Vivekananda arrived in Baranagar, Calcutta with his small group of Western disciples. Two monasteries were founded by him, one at Belur, which became the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission and the other at Mayavati on the Himalayas, in Champawat District, Uttrakhand, called the Advaita Ashrama.[4][5] These monasteries were meant to receive and train young men who would eventually become sannyasis (religious ascetic) of the Ramakrishna Mission, and to give them a training for their work. The same year the philanthropic activity was started and relief of the famine was carried out.[5]Swami Vivekanandas days as a parivrajaka (wandering monk) before his visit to Parliament of Religions, took him through many parts of India and he visited several architectural monuments like the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri palaces, Diwan–I–Khas, palaces of Rajasthan, ancient temples of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other places. During his tour in America and Europe, he came across buildings of architectural importance of Modern, Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is reported that Vivekananda incorporated these ideas in the design of the Belur Math temple.[6]Swami Vijnanananda, a brother-monk of Swami Vivekananda and one of the monastic disciples of Ramakrishna, who was, in his pre-monastic life, a civil engineer, designed the temple according to the ideas of Vivekananda and Swami Shivananda, the then President of Belur Math laid the foundation stone on 16 May 1935. The massive construction was handled by Martin Burn & Co.. The mission proclaims the Belur Math as, A Symphony in Architecture.[

It had an area of 11 bighas 4 kathas 2 chhatakas and 50 square feet. The authorities of the Belur Math purchased its northern portion and southern portion in 1946 and 1949 respectively. Paramhansa Sri Ramakrishna lived on the Ist floor. Sri Ramakrishna came to this garden house on the 11th December, 1885 and stayed till the breathed his last on the 16th August, 1886 at 1.02 am. It was here that Swami Vivekananda had transmitted by touch high Advaitic feelings. It was here that Swamiji attained Nirvikalpa samadhi. It is called a place of Kalpataru Lila site. In this site on Ist January, 1886 Sri Ramakrishna Dev blessed all devotees assembled (Girish Chandra Ghosh and others) saying May you all be blessed with the Spiritual Awakening. Now every first January is celebrated as Kalpataru utsabh. Many devotees are assembled here. Sri Sri Mother Sarada Devi said, It is a place of His Mahasamadhi. It is a place of realization through Dhyana. Wonderful environment. Example of cleanliness. Quiet place for meditation. (Sources: Descriptions from the Great Master)

The East India Company obtained from the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar, in 1717, the right to rent from 38 villages surrounding their settlement. Of these 5 lay across the Hooghly in what is now Howrah district. The remaining 33 villages were on the Calcutta side. After the fall of Siraj-ud-daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, it purchased these villages in 1758 from Mir Jafar, and reorganised them. These villages were known en-bloc as Dihi Panchannagram and Cossipore was one of them. It was considered to be a suburb beyond the limits of the Maratha Ditch.H. E. A. Cotton writes, The Cossipore Reach was one of the finest on the river, and is lined by a number of villa residences. From those days Cossipore had a number of industrial units. – the Government Gun Foundry, the Snider and Rifle Shell factories (originally constructed by Colonel Hutchinson), sugar mills and jute screw houses.Entally, Manicktala, Beliaghata, Ultadanga, Chitpur, Cossipore, parts of Beniapukur, Ballygunge, Watganj and Ekbalpur, and parts of Garden Reach and Tollygunj were added to Kolkata Municipal Corporation in 1888.
