It is a vintage Theatre Group of West Bengal. The main leading person and also the group is run by Rudra Prasad Sengupta. This group holds 4 National Awardees viz. Rudra Prasad Sengupta, Swatilekha Sengupta, Sohini Sengupta and Debshankar Halder. The group was founded by Ajitesh Bandopadhyay in the year 1960. The logo of Nandikar was designed by Satyajit Ray. For diversity, quality and scale of its sustained activities, Nandikar has earned a niche in the national cutural calendar

This is a theatre group owned by Sengupta family, which stages good production. Nandikar in its old days staged only translation of foreign plays like Louigi Pirandellos Six Characters (নআট্যকারের সন্ধানে ছটি চরিত্র) , Anton Chekhovs Cherry Orchard (মঞ্জরী আমের মঞ্জরি), Bertolt Brechts Caucasian Chalk Circle (খড়ীর গন্ডী), Arnold Weskers The Root (ফুল ফুটুক না ফুটুক) etc. Its old glory is lost when Ajitesh Bandyopadhyay, Ajit Bandyopadhyay (remarkable for his role in Six Characters) and many other stalwarts left the group and it became a family group.
