This is The Reserve Bank of India Museum. Money is an intrinsic component of the cultural heritage of a country mirroring its socio-economic history. India was one of the earliest issuers of coinage in the world and has been home to many-a-monetary experiment recorded in history. The Museum will immerse you in a one-of-a-kind experience that explains the money, its role in the economy and your role in it, in a fun and interactive way.You can also explore how money has evolved over the centuries, how and why gold still holds an important place in our society and also about the genesis of RBI.The RBI Monetary Museum aims at documenting and preserving this heritage. The Museum proposes to put in place permanent, temporary and itinerant exhibits of the representative coinage of India, paper currency, gold bars as well as financial instruments and curiosities down the ages.

Established in 1935, the Reserve Bank of India started operating from this building.Built by Martin & Burn, the same company that built the Victoria Memorial & the Ochterlony Memorial.Entry is free and the museum opens promptly at 10 A.M. They make you store any bags and water bottles once inside.Everything is on the ground level so not an issue for people with reduced mobility. The displays are very informative from the history of currency displayed and described from the ancient world down to today.Theyve a number of interactive options to have fun and learn from. You can weigh yourself on a scale and get your body weight in terms of gold bullion. My favourite was the option of trying to lift a faux gold bar. Gives you an idea how gold being a dense metal is almost thrice as heavy as anything similar made of iron.A must when in Kolkata and even for locals too.

A great museum to enter in. While entering it would seem like a spectacular blend between old and new, modern and ancient, a senile venerable history and a modern architecture and technological marvel. It is located in the first building of the Reserve Bank of India, known as Currency Building which is located at No. 8, Council House Street was constructed by M/s Martin and Burn- the same firm that built the iconic Victoria Memorial. It is a two storied museum. In the ground floor the history of RBI is unfolded in a spectacular pattern through objects and presentation and visuals. In the first floor there are various games depicting enormity of RBI functions. It indeed is a great place to visit and learn and play at the same time. Children can also visit this place for learning. RBI museum guarantees a great learning experience.

Excellent initiative by the RBI to enlighten the people about the role played by the central bank of our country since its very inception in 1935 as the key regulator for the banking system in India besides putting on view the evolution of money from the early days of barter to the complex modern financial systems including currencies, bullions and more, this glittering museum located behind Hongkong House is both unique and informative and also without an entry fee.

For budding economists like me (😛) RBI is like a place of worship. Its where all our answers of Money and Banking chapter lies. And its much more ! You can get your weight in gold, you can see where the demonetized 500 and 1000 Rupees went (I guess this one everyone has wondered). Youll get to see what all can be made from shredded notes and obsolete coins, heck you can bring them home too !! Also there are so many games to play, so much information in one place. A must visit for people like me, and also not like me ! Its a gem ! Must must visit ❤

According to me it is the best museum in our town. Probably it is the second RBI museum of our country and only RBI museum in our Eastern Region. This two storied museum is situated at Old RBI building of Dalhousie area, near Esplanade Kolkata. Most importantly it is totally free to all and for Divyang (Physical Challenged) people here is a totally arrangement of visiting. It is the best place to visit with your family and friends to gather knowledge the money and monetary related history of pre independence and current Indian currency and global currency and its revolution. Here you can play some interesting games to know more about RBI & money related details. Most importantly dont forget to ask for the print out a specimen bond with the help of Indias first bond printing machine. We visit this place at October, at that time a cafeteria was in construction mode & almost ready to serve for visitors.

This museum exhibits the history and evolution of the Reserve Bank of India and Indian monetary system. The Reserve Bank of India was founded in the year 1935 as per recommendation of Hilton - Young Commission, which had drawn the idea of a central bank from the book titled “The Problem of the Rupee – Its origin and its solution” by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. RBI started functioning in the year 1937 from this building in Kolkata which houses the museum today. It also throws light on the history of worlds monetary system, as a whole. It contains replica of coins, exchanges, market places, some equipments used for money printing etc. Students of economics or anyone with an interest in monetary system will find this museum quite fascinating.

Do you know, long before the introduction of money food grains, salt, replicas of tools, cowries and even giant donuts shaped stones served as a medium of exchange? The newly opened Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Museum provides an extensive insight into the history of money and banking.Opened on 11 March 2019 this is the second RBI museum in the country. It came 21 years after the inaugural one opened its gates at the Mumbai headquarters.Located at 8 Council House Street the RBI Museum is just a short distance away from the RBI Kolkata regional office. It was at this very building the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was formed under the governorship of Sir Osborne Smith in 1935. Also the building was the venue of the first annual general meeting of the shareholders held in 1936.But the building predates the RBI and once housed the Alliance Bank of Shimla. and in 1935 RBI took it on lease.Later in 1943 Alliance Bank went in liquidation and RBI acquired the property. Initially the RBI’s central office and banking department was housed in this building while the issue department operated from the nearby Currency Building. In the mid 1950s the new RBI building came up in the place of Old Custom House and served as RBI, Kolkata Regional Office, but several departments continued to function in the old office of 8 Council House Street. The iconic red and white building was constructed by Martin & Co. It was owned by Sir Rajen Mokherjee and Sir Thomas Acquin Martin. The building still houses several departments of RBI. The newly opened RBI Museum is housed at the ground floor of the iconic building. The RBI Museum has been designed jointly by a team of RBI officials and Creative Museum Designers (CMD), a Kolkata-based company under the National Council of Science Museums. The reception area of the museum contains a registration deck along with a small souvenir shop. The souvenir shop sells RBI memorabilia, many of which are made of shredded notes. The walls are decorated with shredded note design and the pillars contains a collage of discarded coins. A compilation of drawing shows the journey of Indian currency notes write from the making of the paper to the process of destruction. The entrance to the museum is through a self opened glass door passing through a one rupee coin. Apart from the ground floor the museum also has a mezzanine floor housing a game area. The visit to the RBI Museum starts with a small documentary. The 20 minutes documentary depicts the history of RBI along with a brief introduction to finance and banking.Apart from exhibits and write ups the RBI Museum houses several audio visual displays and touch screen monitors and has has several interactive sections.According to the authorities the objective of the museum is to use storytelling as a tool to create financial and banking literacy. Its main objective was to provide a brief idea about the history and evolution of RBI.At the centre of the ground floor stands a 12 feet high installation art depicting the evaluation of money. It starts from coins and notes evolving into online transfer of money and finally into cryptocurrency.Although the display boards are in English but Bengali and Hindi translations are provided in cards kept below each display. Among the artifacts displayed the most interesting is a replica of a Yap Stone. The giant stone disc is about 2 meters in diameter with a central hole was once used as a money in the Pacific island of Yap.The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and entry is free even the vintage printed certificate comes absolutely free. While you head back home from the RBI Museum do take home a piece of souvenir from the souvenir shop.
