Beautiful place. Theres arrangement of sitting. No entry fee. Tourist spot. One thing I dont like about this place is, theres no shade. Itll tiring if you visit there in summer. A large field is there. Theres no timing of opening of closing. This place is near a bus stop. Its few minutes away from Esplanade Metro Station. Moreover, transportation in this place is quite advanced.

The Monument was erected to commemorate Major-general David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company’s main force in the Gurkha War of 1816.Rallies.We walked in the park near Shaheed Minar- Beautifully lit park with fountains.

One of the most histrorical and iconic structure of Kolkata in remembrance of the martyrs near Esplanade bus terminus. The Shaheed Minar (English: Martyrs Monument), formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, is a monument in Kolkata that was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company, to commemorate both his successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and the victory of the East India Company’s armed forces over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War also known as the Gurkha War. The monument was constructed inhis memory. It was designed by J. P. Parker and paid for from public funds.Nice place to enjoy with friends & family. But the govt. needs to maintain this place better because there are lot of dirty things around the minar and tourists throw different kinds of food packets and other things in the field, which spoils the beauty of the place.

I walked up to this minar one night to photograph. It looked quite shady at night to be honest due to lack of light and people and vendors sitting around it in the dark. Some probably were just sitting to catch the long distance bus. But I would request the govt to make these kind of place adequately lit at night and the request the people t help keep the city clean.I wish I could get more time to spend here in the morning instead.

In the year 1969, it was rechristened as Shaheed Minar or the “Martyr’s Tower” in memory of brave martyrs of Indian Freedom Movement. It has an impressive blend of Egyptian, Syrian and Turkish style of designing has been used in the architecture. It is 48 meters and if one gets a special permission to get into it, he will need to climb more than 200 steps to reach to the two balconies at the top. There is vast field called Shaheed Minar Maidan which has been known for hosting a number of political rallies. The Government has now taken up the work of refurbishment of the tower for making it accessible to the public.
