Beautiful place. They have many exotic birds and other wild animals. The mighty royal bengal tiger is the main attraction of the garden. However dont go in the afternoon as most of the animals spend the time sleeping in their caves, specially in the reptile house almost all of the snakes were sleeping in the bushes which makes them really hard to spot.

Your such approach to entertain your children is extremely discouraged and it is punishable offence too.

Relationship between Man and Animal dates back to prehistoric era, and this relationship led to what we call today a ZOO. However in the present era zoo have changed from exhibitionisim, entertainment and amusement into research, education and ex-situ conservation specially to complement in-situ conservation. Kolkata Zoological Garden was established in Alipore of Kolkata on 24th September, 1875, when the citizens of Kolkata came forward with generosity. One of the 1st Indian donors were Raja Rajendra Mullick Bahadur. The first Indian superintendent of the zoo was Ram Brahma Sanyal, who made the zoo the pioneer among the existing zoos in 19th & earlier 20th century. The Central Zoo Authority of India developed in 1992, when the garden was modelled with the help of Govt. Of West Bengal. The other patrons without whose generous help the zoo would not have came this far as today were, Nawab Bahadur of Murshidabad, Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandy, Carl Louis Schwendler, Mr. C.T.Buckland, Maharaja Bahadur Surya Kanta Acharya Chowdhury of Mymensing, Mr. Ellias Gubbay, Maharaja Sir Jotindra Mohan Tagore, Mr. David Ezra, Raja Rajendra Nath Mullick. The zoo covers an area of about 18.81 hectares. The visitor facilities available in zoo are Washrooms, Resting Sheds, Decorative Benches, Drinking Water. The garden is closed on Thursdays. The entry fee is Rs.30 for visitors above 5 years age and Rs.10 for visitors below 5 years age. Ticket counter opens at 9am and closes at 4:30pm.

The world is a huge place to see. It consists of so many living organisms that it is impossible to see each and every one of them. Especially for human beings, who are fascinated very much by animals. For the same reasons, zoos were created so that humans can interact better with animals. In other words, a zoo is a facility that has animals, birds, and reptiles of all kinds. They are confined to space where they are given food and medical facilities. The government has given strict guidelines to maintain a zoo. This is done keeping in mind the animal’s safety. In addition, zoos are made breeding grounds for animals to protect their species.Benefits of ZooZoos were made to bring wildlife closer to humans. It gave humans a better and up-close view of them. This allows various researchers and scientists to note the behavioral pattern of the animals. It helps them in their studies and discover new things. In addition, zoos are a great source of entertainment for kids. They love visiting zoos and interacting with animals. This helps them learn practical knowledge about the animal. It also gives them exposure to wildlife and widens their knowledge.Furthermore, zoos give us easy access to rare animals. Had it not been for zoos, we would have never been able to see what some animals looked like. We enjoy their behavior and it also creates awareness about the extinction of the rare species.Similarly, zoos are a safe breeding ground for animals. They ensure the animal breeds so they never go extinct. This helps in creating a good balance. Moreover, the zoos ensure the animals get all the nutrition in their bodies to lead a healthy life. This is beneficial as the animal may not get guaranteed meals in the forests.

There are many animals including elephant, tiger, lion, giraffes, different birds, reptiles, rhinos etc. But it is very saddening and unfortunate to observe that the zoo lacks proper maintenance. Almost all the animals look like old and tired and less fed. Government and the zoo authority should take care of the animals as well as the garden more efficiently. It is also the visitors who should be more responsible for not littering around. Perhaps strict policies, laws and regulations can only handle the situation.

The Zoological Garden, Alipore (also informally called the Alipore Zoo or Calcutta Zoo) is Indias oldest formally stated zoological park (as opposed to royal and British menageries) and a big tourist attraction in Kolkata, West Bengal. It has been open as a zoo since 1876, and covers 18.811 ha (46.48 acres). It is probably best known as the home of the now expired Aldabra giant tortoise Adwaita, who was reputed to have been over 250 years old when he died in 2006. It is also home to one of the few captive breeding projects involving the Manipur brow-antlered deer. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Kolkata, it draws huge crowds during the winter season, especially during December and January. The highest attendance till date was on January 1, 2018 with 110,000 visitors.

One of the most visiting place in KolkataWe received our stay as an anniversary present. It exceeded all expectations. This property is charming and magnificent in its décor. Annette and her husband Andy made us feel so welcome and at home. A tour of the B & B certainly enlightened us to the possibilities of their establishment- hosting, dinners, wine tasting, small meetings, accommodation for out of town guests of those living in the area- so much more intimate than a hotel. The living area is a great place to sit in the evening- we brought our Collingwood area family in to share the experience. Sharing morning coffee, books and the paper enhanced the beginning of the day in this room also. Bacchus House is exceptionally clean and the rooms are well appointed and elaborately dressed. Sparking white towels, soft sheets under a duvet , lovely toiletries, use of a bathrobe, make this a 5 star B & B. Breakfast was a feast. Beautiful china, lavish table linens, soft upbeat background music sets the scene. There are delicious selections of entrees, scrumptious muffins, juices, and fruits. Attentive service is provided by Annette. Parking is available and Bacchus House is walking distance to downtown for most. There is lots to do in Collingwood and area year round- no need to be a skier. We strongly suggest that you book early as this is a sought after location. We really enjoyed the hospitality and overnight experience

Good place for kids as always and a good picnic spot in Kolkata as well. Situated just beside the National Library and opposite to the Taj Bengal its situated at a very prominent location and can be noted from anywhere. Its a must visit place for kids with family.

One of the best places to hang out with family and friends. However, due to the negligence of the people and the authorities, a lot of plastic waste is spreading around here.As a result, we are slowly destroying a beautiful place. There are some other negligence of the authorities for which the animals are being stolen or dying day by day. Therefore, the authorities need to take more drastic steps in this regard and the general public should also be very aware of the issues related to our environmental pollution. We need to be aware of our own well-being.

I think authority may look on the cleaning and maintaining section... My humble request to all and authority if any one read my comment please dont allow any type of food in zoo... The garbage of the food materials and plastics polluted the environment of zoo.. Not allowed any types of snacks soap at zoo.. Only drinking water and washroom may need in zoo... At least zoo may be far from politics.. Because the money which spend here that was public money not any political leader pocket money....

Good place to gain knowledge and also to have a family outing. Only con is that some animals are kept in really small enclosures.Someone needs to think about helping the poor creatures too!

By keeping members of an endangered species in captivity, zoos create a population reservoir and, with the help of breeding programs, wild populations can be augmented with the introduction of animals bred in captivity.
