The Mahalaxmi Temple, known locally as the Ambabai Mandir is the most well known temple of Kolhapur. It is sometimes referred to as the Dakshin Kashi. It is a very ancient temple said to have been built in the 7th Century CE. The idol of Mahalaxmi is carved in black stone and is only 3 feet in height. The temple is open from 5 am to 10.30 pm. Fridays are the most auspicious days at the temple and consequently are the most crowded days. You may have a very long wait on Fridays to get the darshan of the deity. Being in a congested market area parking lots are at a bit of a distance and then you have to walk for about 5 minutes to reach the entrance.

The Shri Mahalakshmi (AmbaBai) Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, is one of the 18 Shakti Peethas listed in various puranas of Hinduism. Great sacred place !From parking to temple clinic, everything is managed.Only thing that lacks here is the security. People are taking photos in the main garbh where Mahalakshmi stays ! Like seriously ! If you do this in Tirupati or Tirumala, they will break your mobile.Kindly maintain secrecy.

Since the temple is ancient, the construction and carving work is very beautiful, there are stone pillars, and it is very pleasing to see the goddess.

Belongs architecturally to the Chalukya empire and was first built in the 7th century.The temple is referred to in multiple Puranas. There is evidence to show that the Konkan king Kamadeo, Chalukyas, Shilahara, Yadavas of devagiri dynasties visited this city. Adi Shankaracharya also visited. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj & Sambhaji reigned.In 109 A.D, Karnadeo cut off the jungle and brought the temple to light. The existence goes back to the 8th century, according to Dr. Bhandarkar & Mr. Khare.In the 8th century, the temple sank down due to earthquake. In the 9th century, Gandavadix (King) extended the temple by building Mahakali Mandir. During 1178–1209, in the reign of Raja Jaysing & Sindhava, South gate & Atibaleshwar Temple were built. In 1218, Yadav king Tolum built Mahadwar, and offered jewels to Devi.

Ambabai Mandir or more often referred to as Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur is located at a distance of @5-6 kms from the bus stand. It has 4 main gates- East-West-North and South. Typically the entrance at east and exit at west are open.Do not carry lot of luggage during the temple visit.For security reasons the luggage may be deposited in the near by cloak rooms.On an average 30 minutes tume is required for darshana.

It will take almost an hour or two from taking the darshan to visiting the entire vicinity except on some feastivals. The is also Mahaprasad (lunch) from 12-3pm approx. which the give coupons after taking the darshan.

Jai MahalakshmiGoddess Mahalakshmi also known as Kolhapur Ambabai. According to puranas Goddess Lakshmi is godess of Wealth, shecame & situated in Kolhapur. As goddess Lakshmi killed Kolhasura rakshasa, City got name Kolhapur.

This is a very old Temple and had the original infrastructure and construction almost till 2013-14 when they decided to reconstructed the outer part. Although the Inner part is still same. The people not only in Radhanagari but also over the near by talukaa are very attached to it. Big crowd can be seen here on each Friday.

Located in Kolhapur, Shri Mahalaxmi is well known in Maharashtra. The mention of this Ambabai in the ancient Karvir city is also found in the Puranas. The temple here is said to be very ancient. The idol was in a small temple at the time of King Karnadev Kolhapur from Konkan. The captain opened the surrounding forest. This became the deity of Maharashtra after the seventeenth century, when many great persons came to the temple and visited Mahalaxmi. There are about 35 small temples and 20 shops in the vicinity of the temple. According to architectural construction, the temple may have been constructed during the Chalukyas rule. The temple is built in hemadpanthi style and there are five summits on the temple. Just next to the main temple is the eagle tent.The idol of Sri Mahalaxmi is made of gemstone and it is said to have been around five to six thousand years ago. The statue weighs about forty kilos. The goddess has four arms. Crowns and sheaths on headIs. Most of the temples are facing east or north, but the goddess here is westward. There is a small window on the west wall of the temple. At sunset on the 21st of March and September of the year, the suns rays fall on the idols face. This yoga is considered rare and beneficial.Aarti is one of the major rituals in the daily rituals of the temple. Aarti was performed five times daily. Around 4 am, Kakad Aarti is performed. This time there was a religious song of Bhupa Rag. After Mangararati, the high priestess is performed around 8 in the morning. Every night, it was around ten. At this time, sweet milk is offered. Aarti is performed in the abdomen and during this time special worship is performed to give the goddess sleep. Mahakali, Shri Yantra, Mahaganapati and Maharswati are also shown Aarti and Naidya. All 87 temples in the temple area are covered with aarti.

The Mahalakshmi Temple (Temple of Ambabai) in Kolhapur is one of the 108 Peethas mentioned in the Puranas and one of the three and a half Peethas of the Goddess in Maharashtra. From the layout of the temple, it dates back to the Chalukya period. It is likely to have been built between 600 and 700. The first construction of the temple may have been done by the Rashtrakuta or earlier Shilahar kings around the eighth century.The antiquity of the Ambabai temple is proved by the Puranas, many Jain texts, copperplates and many documents found and Ambabai of Kolhapur is literally the Kulaswamini of all Maharashtra.It is said that when the Mughals destroyed the temple, the idol of the goddess was hidden by the priest for many years. Later in the reign of Sambhaji Maharaj. The temple was revived between 1715 and 1722. The difference in craftsmanship is probably due to the fine carved walls and the simple top of the peak.According to many, the goddess is a form of Jagdamba due to the lion near the idol and the matulinga on the vein The idol of the goddess is made of stone and weighs 40 kg. Behind the idol is a stone lion. There is a crown on the head and there is a serpent coin on it. The Sanskrit Aarti of the Goddess also describes the serpent on her head. In the seventh verse of the 13th chapter of the book Karveer Mahatmya, it is said that the Pannagankita Mastakam means that the serpent saw his fana on the head of the Goddess. In the Hemadri Veerachit Chaturvargachintamani, composed by Hemadri, the pioneer of the Hemadpanthi temple system, it is mentioned that the idol on the head is described as a snake.
