For those not so familiar with the hierarchy of delivering governance to the common citizen, India has the Village office at the local Village level and above it comes the Taluk Office. The Village office and Taluk office are the offices you go to for various services such as birth and death registration, domicile certificate, legal heir-ship certificate, payment of your land taxes etc.The Kanayannur Taluk office covers a number of villages (In todays context they no more look like traditional villages with all the urbanization happening) and is located next to the the Maharajas College Ernakulam. The Taluk office is housed in buildings that reflects the Architecture of the late 1800s with its arched entrances, laterite walls, high ceilings, wooded staircases, tiled roofs and tall windows. All of this helps in keeping the offices airy and cool without air-conditioners.In the courtyard you have the snack bars run by husband and wife teams, vending hot tea, coffee and local savories. All served under the shade of ancient trees, while you wait for your turn at the counters or for your paperwork to get done. The government staff are polite and professional, a reflection of the changing social set up where the staff see themselves as serving the people, rather than to rule the people as was in the era when these building were built and first used by the British or Kings of that era. It also helps that Kerala is the most educated state and the citizens are aware of their rights & obligations (!).Just 200 meters to the west is the water front overlooking the mouth of the Cochin harbor.

The Taluk Surveyor is performing a very good and important job by conducting survey of lands to solve the problems and disputes that arises between adjacent land owners so as to protect the legitimate rights of the genuine owner of the property. If such disputes are not thus settled the concerned individuals may have to move the appropriate civil court for remedies.
