One of the important Gowda Saraswat Brahmin Temple dedicated to Lord Tirumala. It is a mini world of Konkan within Kochi. The present temple complex was rebuilt after the Portuguese rulers destroyed it during the invasion. The Dutch later defeated them and restored the temple to GSB. It has many facinating stories. One I can recollect involves the temples main bell. It is rumoured that the bell was bound for some foreign destination. Due to cyclone the ship was grounded at Kochi and the captain of the ship offered the bell to the temple. Another is that it seems rice payasam (kheer) consumed by devotees contained poison. All the devotees were asked to stay inside the temple and Abhishek was performed to the deity. The lord had rescued the devotees and to prove the point the right toe of the lord is turned in blue colour. One of the uniqueness of community lunch could be seen in this temple. Lunch is served to more than 1,000 people at a time. Till everybody is served no body start consuming except maybe toddlers. After serving everybody cracker is burst called kodhono to signal eating. Likewise at the end of the meal the kodhono is burst again to signal that the devotees can get up to clean. This is followed even now. Gents are allowed to sit only when they remove their shirts and baniyan and gents have to wear only dhoti. Ladies are allowed to wear saree and chudidar. School children are allowed with uniform for the samaradhan. During evenings Vedas were taught to the children.
