The rajas also made more improvements to it. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas and notable for some of the best mythological murals in India, which are in the best traditions of Hindu temple art. The palace was built to appease the king after they plundered a temple nearby. The landing of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer at Kappad in 1498 was welcomed by the Kochi rulers. They were given exclusive right to construct factories. The Portuguese repulsed the repeated attacks of the Zamorians and the Cochin Rajas practically became vassals of the Portuguese. The influence of the Portuguese were supplanted by the Dutch and they took over Mattancherry in 1663. Subsequently, the area was taken over by Hyder Ali and still later by the British East India Company

A simple and minimalist palace built by the Portuguese in 1557 and presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi. Its also called the Dutch Palace. The palace is quite unassuming and not quite what you would be expecting of a palace, there are a series of rooms which depicts the lineage of the royal family, it also houses a number of artifacts such as swords, Spears, knives, etc from the era. Paintings of the kings and their family members adorn the walls. The double-storied palace has a lovely collection of murals. These depict some of the great Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata along with revered Gods of the Hindu faith like Lord Krishna of Guruvayur temple. One gets an idea of the lives of the royal family with some of the other exhibits. There is a nominal charge for entry, photography is prohibited in most of the rooms, there are no good places to eat nearby, carry water bottles, a few of the guides did not seem to have a clear understanding of the artifacts, so be careful while chosing a one.

The Mattancherry Palace is a prominent tourist attraction of Kochi. It was built by the Portuguese around 1555 as a present to the Raja of Cochin. There is a lot of history attached to the palace. In 1663 the Dutch took over Mattancherry and the palace is sometimes referred to as Dutch Palace. Subsequently the area was captured by Hyder Ali, and still later by the British East India Company. The palace is built in traditional Kerala style, with a sloping tiled roof and a courtyard in the middle. There is a small temple in the courtyard dedicated to protective goddess of the Kochi Royal family. There are two more temples in the temple compound, one dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other to Lord Krishna. But the main attractions of the palace are the paintings and murals inside. Most of the murals depict the story of the Ramayana, and there are some from the Krishna Lila. Paintings of the Rajas of Cochin are displayed in the coronation hall, along with some more exhibits like the a palanquin, a howdah, ceremonial dresses and ancient stamps and coins. The palace is always overflowing with busloads of tourists, including local school children and foreigners. Visiting hours are from 10 am to 5 pm, with a lunch break from 1 pm to 2 pm. It is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. Photography is prohibited inside the palace.

Mattancherry in Kochi is famous across the country for its Jewish community who have been a part of the society since the 12th century. Many had immigrated to this part of the world as part of their trade. It is interesting to note that even to this day, the Jews of Mattancherry carry on a flourishing trade. Even though they consider themselves as Keralites, they also uphold their ancient traditions. Many small and colorful shops are set up along the streets of Mattancherry, showcasing many antique artifacts and curios from a bygone era.Mattancherry, the western part of Kochi, was once a bustling centre of trade. Invasions from across the sea were frequent and the invaders left unforgettable marks on the landscape, culture, art and social history of the place. Mattancherry has welcomed every migrant community that came to her shore with warmth and provided them with abundant opportunities to thrive. Thanks to the generosity of the erstwhile kings of Cochin, numerous communities like that of the Jews, Konkani, Gujarati, Jains and Marathi made the place their home. To this day, Mattancherry has people of different tongues and ethnic identities. Churches, Agraharams, Mosques and a Synagogue co-exist in the area, along with the buildings of the colonial era, pointing to a vibrant past and a harmonious present.
