I was lucky enough to get to the roof top. Im not sure if its usually open if even open often, but if you have the chance I greatly recommended sizing the opportunity. It gives you a beautiful view of the temple mount and the old city. And just really cool. There is a like map with English audio on top as well. The shul also offers a beautiful huge public sukkah on sukkos, as seen in this picture with the famous menorah. The sukka also had kosher refreshments (drinks and like cookies). On chol hamoed night there were simchas beis hashueivas in the shul as well. Live music and amazing dancing

I first saw the Hurva Synagogue in 2004 when it was in ruins. It is now beautifully refurbished. The guided tour is especially helpful in understanding the history of the synagogue and of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. The Hurva is situated in the Rova or central square of the Jewish Quarter.

Hurva is an important historical synagogue for Jewish people in the Old City and a place well worth visiting if you intend to spend time in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem.Note: You can purchase the Jewish Quarter special ticket (60 NIS per person) which includes entry to the Hurva Synagouge. Wohl Museum of Archeology (Herodian Quarter) and the Jerusalem Archaeolgoical Park and Davidson Center. This combined ticket can save you a bit of money if you are intending to visit these four attractions. The synagogue has a bit of a turbulent history having been destroyed by twice since it original construction in the early 18th century. It was most recently rebuilt and dedicated in 2010. As such, the building is quite new, modern and attractive. The exterior is Hurva Synagogue can be enjoyed from the square jus in front. Further, there is rooftop access where you can enjoy 360 panorama views of Jerusalem by walking around the building dome. From here you can see the attractions beyond the Dome of the Rock to the Mount of Olives from here. From the top, visitors can enter the indoor walking area at the dome, allowing you to peer down into the quaint prayer hall. There is a two storey torah ark that is well worth spending a few minutes to enjoy. Further viewing areas into the prayer hall are found on the ground and first floor.Overall, we enjoyed our time at the Hurva Synagogue finding it a worthwhile place to visit during time spent in the Jewish Quarter.

Situated in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, at equal distance of the Dung Gate (Western Wall entry), Zion Gate (King Davids tomb) and Jaffa Gate (Tower of David entry), the synagogue was last destroyed in 1948 by Jordan, when its Arab Legion captured the Old City.It was recently (2010) and magnificently rebuilt by Israel in its original form.

Visitors to the rebuilt synagogue can admire the special beauty of its interior, view the world’s tallest Holy Ark (which contains the synagogue’s Torah scrolls) and hear the fascinating story of the Hurva Synagogue. They can see history with their own eyes, and enjoy the breathtaking 360 degree view of Jerusalem from the veranda surrounding the synagogue’s dome. This synagogue is located at the heart of the Jewish Quarter, and it is one of the most beautiful and impressive synagogues in Jerusalem and perhaps in the entire country. As far as I know an aliyah (“calling up”) to the Torah ceremony for a Bar Mitzvah, as well as conferences and other ceremonies can be held in the Hurva Synagogue.A visit to this Synagogue is a moving experience and a piece of history await those who visit the Hurva Synagogue.

I had the absolute privilege of visiting the Huvra synagogue last week, on Friday, before Shabbat. Coming all the way from Australia, it is not often that I have the opportunity to visit a synagogue in Jerusalem. Whilst i was inspired by the history and the significance of the synagogue itself, the defining moment in my experience there, was the hospitality and the kindness of the volunteer who was on the desk at the time, Ariel. Ariel was kind enough to converse with me about his life in Jerusalem after living in the United States, and his involvement with the Synagogue. Whilst i am not Jewish myself, Ariel was very generous to invite me to his local synagogue that Friday evening, for upcoming Chanukah celebrations. Although i was leaving Israel that day, I will never forget the kindness and passion that Ariel had in welcoming me to the Synagogue, and explaining how special Jerusalem and the Huvra synagogue is to him. It was truly a privilege being welcomed into the Huvra synagogue, and i hope to visit again, and make contact with Ariel. Thankyou for enabling me to have such an incredible experience.

“On the top of one of the mountains around Jerusalem, the dome of the synagogue will be seen between the domes of each house, as large as the moon among the stars.” This is how Rabbi Yosha Yossef Rivlin expresses his excitement at the dedication of the synagogue. The Hurva Synagogue was re-inaugurated on March 15, 2010, 62 years after its destruction, which began with the demolition of the synagogue by Jordanian Legion forces during the fall of the Quarter in 1948 during the War of Independence. The decision to plan and rebuild the synagogue, was accompanied by a wide public debate, was the end of a long and winding process that began with the liberation of the Jewish Quarter in the 1967 Six Day War.

One of the places that I dreamed of going to see. Magnificent architecture. It also has such a rich and yet sad history. Destroyed twice and recently rebuilt. It really echoes Jewish history. A magnificent nation who have only wanted to what is right but have been persicuted and tourtuted throughout the years. I looked down from the womans gallery and a tear formed in my eyes as I viewed beautiful Jewish children learning their holy Torah. Showing me what a stubborn and holy nation they are and that they will continue to survive and thrive as a result of their determination and love of the holy Torah. Honestly this is a must see, the building has a regal bearing, it is both refined and majestic. A must see.

A nice new-ish place of worship in Old Jerusalem with a tumultuous history of being destroyed and rebuilt a couple of times.Very modest in term of finishes used on the interiors. It has the same feeling the Church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, without its long history and glamorous emperor and empress as patrons. Four stars only not because there is something wrong with it, but because it feels so new - almost like an impostor - in a city that is so old, especially being compared to other places of worship like the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of Holy Sepulchre, or the 5th Century St Mark Church (Chapel).
