Great experience, great meal! I have found a mew favorite place for lunch or dinner! The crispy veggie rolls we the best I have had! The desert selection was excellent as well. There were vegan options for my wife, and they customize a dish for with no questions or hassle! Excellent service, the place is run the way a restaurant should be run! Slightly slower pace, like In Europe, not trying to rush you out just to turn the table. Love decor and feel! I’m starting a monthly stand reservation!

Based on a referral and local lore, I took my wife here for a special occasion. It is a beautiful place with a unique ambiance that transports you to another era. The staff is superbly professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. While the food has an artistic presentation and high quality ingredients, it is not memorable, its range of flavors is muted, the options are limited, and the portions are small. Frankly, you can get more flavorful and impressionable food at a place like Simply Pasteur, which is also French Vietnamese and carries a broader repertoire of options and flavors and unique culinary experiences. Pictured here are Chao Tom (flavorful and fresh), Cari Tom (great shrimp but sadly bland and missing that gusto of a full bodied curry), and Tom Xao Date (flavorful but not remarkable).

I highly recommend the happy hour here! The cocktails were $9 each and the small bites were$9. My favorite was the lychee martini. The mango Bellini was okay. The Vietnamese gimlet was a second. I had the chicken salad and the dumplings. Very tasty and good value. Then ordered the pho $14 from the regular menu. Very good too. The portions was small and enough I liked it that way. The ambiance and the decor was very lovely. I’ll come back here again for dinner and happy hour again for sure!

Decoration is spot on (French colonized Vietnamese vibe) and it’s like time traveling to the 90s.High quality, well made food. Lotus Root Salad is my favorite. Great balance between ingredients and very refreshing. Roasted Duck and their signature Snapper are pretty within expectation, but amazingly I don’t get overwhelmed by the sweet-sour taste like I usually did in other restaurants. Their sauces have great balance between saltiness, sweet, and acidity. The duck is also well roasted—the skin is crunchy and not greasy at all, and the meat is very tender.I’d say overall this is a 4-4.5 star restaurant. One of those “really good but not amazed” restaurants.

If I were a betting man, I’d wager that the owner of Le Colonial has an obsessive eye for detail and is a consummate perfectionist.Having spent an unsuccessful hour shopping I needed an early dinner with a glass or two of wine and thankfully I stopped in to this aesthetically stunning restaurant. Immediately I was greeted by courteous and friendly hosts who showed me to a seat at what is undoubtedly one of Chicago’s more opulent bars. The pan seared dumplings were both delicate and hearty and the bartender kindly advised me that they were on the happy hour menu and hence a steal at $9. I asked for a recommendation on the wine and was advised to go for the cheaper option (always a win in my book) which was delicious. For my main course I opted for the “shimmering beef” with a side of garlic noodles. Again I was blown away by the quality. All in all a superb restaurant and I can not wait to return.I would give six stars if I could.

This place was good! I went here after the owner of Chicago Raw suggested it for vegan food. I got the vegetable rolls, which were basic, but delicious. Very lovely dinner, great flavours… but very small portions for takeout, which makes it very expensive for what you get. One of the best restaurants in Chicago. Excellent food, excellent service and amazing ambience. Bit on the pricey side but totally worth it. All the dishes we tried were really good - Rice Crepes, Shrimp and Pork Roll, Chicken Stir Fry and Shrimp Stir Fry. They also have a coat check in for the winter days.

We had heard Le Colonial was really good but it still exceeded my expectations. We had the Sui Cao Chien (Pan-Seared Chicken Dumplings), Com Chien (Signature Fried Rice), and Mi Xao He (Wok-Sautéed Garlic Noodles). All were amazing and the three together was the perfect sized portion for two people to split and be full but without leftovers. The dumplings had a nice pan sear without being too crispy/fried and they came served over the sauce so they were able to really absorb the tangy flavor. The rice was light in flavor but tasted so fresh and the chicken was tender and shredded instead of big pieces. The noodles were delicious with a very garlic-forward flavor. We will absolutely be back again - hopefully next time able to sit on their adorable enclosed patio!

Super cute place with a great ambiance! Also located in a great area. The pho (and drinks) are absolutely delicious! However, certain items on the menu should not be as expensive given the quality and quantity. The cold spring rolls are $15 for 3 full size spring rolls that are comprised of: unseasoned shrimp, rice noodles, bean sprouts, lettuce, and rice paper. Other than that, would definitely recommend when craving pho or a nice cocktail with a great ambiance.

Small details made the experience special from fresh flowers to dated historic portraits indicative to its culture. Although I still prefer my auntys home-cooked meals because she knows just how I like it, the food was still delicious. The best part of Le Colonial is its ambiance! The interior design is lovely and feels comfortable and vibrant. Their complimentary matchboxes serve as lovely souvenirs! Now, about the food.. that’s where I wasn’t impressed. I’ve had cheaper and more flavorful. My appetizer, the pho, had a bland soup base and came lukewarm rather than hot; not a great phō from the get go. Thicker slices of beef were yummy but meant that they didn’t cook with how cool the soup was either. My entree was a big serving (appreciated) but also lacked a lot of flavor. It was overall just slightly sweet. Typically, these dishes would have spices or added heat or something more than just sugar n soy sauce. The dessert was probably the highlight, which is sad to say. I may return with friends for the window seating, but otherwise, I’ll eat phō elsewhere.

The food was OK, but the service was unbearably slow and unreliable. The dish I ordered for my entree arrived first, then the apps, *then* our cocktails (ordered first). I dont think that the server, Maria, was even remotely interested. She disappeared for large amounts of time and we were left with dirty, empty plates. Taking a dessert order seemed to not occur to her, then we waited ridiculous amounts of time for the check. She disappeared for 15 minutes with our credit card before wandering back over to get a signature. Total meal length: 2 hours and then some.

I dine here about 3 times a month and consistently experience: outstanding service, incredible food and great ambiance. Reservations are recommended, although its easy for lunch walk in. My go to dishes: Goi Cuon (Shrimp spring rolls), Pho Bo (Beef noodle soup in an aromatic oxtail broth), Gá Xáo Xá Ót (Stir fried chicken w/veggies), Mushroom sticky rice and the Crème brulèe. Each of these items is a consistent 10. I appreciate a well rolled and proportionally sliced spring roll to start the meal off with (it doesnt fall apart when you bite into it) served with the appropriate dipping plum sauce. The pho is beautifully fragrant and flavorful with the most tender of beef tenderloin slices. The stir fried chicken is a wonderful blend of chicken and veggies and mushroom - with the ratio of chicken to veggies spot on. Youll also be tantalized by the hints of spice and lemongrass in the light yet seductive brown sauce. The sticky rice makes for a perfect compliment to this light but satiating meal. And the grand finale thats the créme brulee with vanilla bean will have your taste buds screaming in ecstacy. Youre welcome.

So let’s start with the positives, the appetizers were great! Fresh and tasty. The service was excellent and the building was beautiful. However, the entrees (mains) were horrid! The prawns were disgusting... they had been cooked in oil that was very old and all you could taste was something that resembled iodine and not prawn.. the taste also lingered and ruined the taste of the wine! The chicken was bland and boring and the veggies lacked that fresh crunch. All in all a disappointment.

At his recommendation, I ordered the pork and shrimp roll and the tuna tartare, as well as the Winter mocktail. The roll was delicious and filling, though notably lacked any bold flavors. The accompanying sliced carrots provided a refreshing level of citrus that complemented the dish well. The tartare was also very good. The soy sauce was prominent and paired well with the texture of the avocado and tuna. The chips provided also gave the dish a nice crunch. Once again, however, the spice profile was nothing too noteworthy.Overall I really enjoyed my meal and Ill likely return. However, especially for the price, I expect the food to wow me a bit more.

Not sure why I didnt like that aspect of the new place. Menu is same and stellar as before. I had the ceviche, pho, and green curry shrimp. All excellent. There did appear to be a TON more hostesses, wait staff, attendants. I felt that they wanted us to turn over the table quickly so I was not thrilled with feeling pressured. Also, a very small nuance: they gave the bill to us in a paper cover with a PAPERCLIP attaching the bill This restaurant is upscale enough to warrant the usual black pleather bill giver. The paperclip is an odd and poor touch. When we got our separate bills back in the same papercover, there were now TWO PAPERCLIPS holding both credit cards and receipts. I will be back but hopefully no more OfficeMax supplies will be issued with the bill.

On this visit to the windy city, we decided to have dinner there again. My first impression is that the ao dai worn by the front staff look too large and not elegant at all. The seating is a bit tight! The cocktail Le Tamarin was recommended and it turned out disappointing, I could not taste the tamarin. On the dinner menu, I wish the serving staff has more knowledge about the vietnamese name of the dishes. I ordered the Chao Tom in Vietnamese and had to translate to the English name for our server. The Chao Tom was decent. We ordered the Roast Duck and it was good, albeit tasted more Chinese than Vietnamese. The grilled eggplants was good, and so was the Rau Xao. The service was very good and attentive. However, we dont think that wed go back there again. Overall rating is 3.5 out of 5.
