The librarys beginnings go back to 1860, when Captain Jesse Mitchell set up a small library as part of the Madras Museum in Madras, capital of the Madras Presidency in the British Indian Empire. Hundreds of books had been found to be surplus in the libraries of Haileybury College (where civil servants of the Indian Civil Service were trained in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire) and these were sent to the Madras Government, which in turn handed them over to the Madras Museum. Conceived on the lines of the British Museum Library, it was part of the Madras Museum until 1890, when the need for a free public library prompted the then Governor of Madras, Lord Connemara, to lay the foundation on 22 March 1890. It opened in 1896 and was named after Lord Connemara (by then the former Governor), an Anglo-Irishnobleman. The library was indeed essentially free: A small deposit had to be paid but this was refundable. It became the state central library in 1948, with the enactment of Madras Public Libraries Act 1948, which was the first concerted effort in India to institutionalise, structure, otherwise, co-ordinate and organise public library services. This is one of the Asias largest libraries. The library was as part of a cultural complex that grew in the grounds of what was once called The Pantheon. The entire complex now boasts buildings that reflect architectural unity, even while demonstrating the various stages of Indo-Saracenic development, from Gothic-neo-Byzantine to Rajput Mughal and Southern Hindu Deccani. The new building, which was added to the library in 1973, has a vast collection of books, a much sought-after textbook section, a periodicals hall, a reference room, a video room, an entire floor for books from the Indian languages, a Braille Library and an IAS study centre. Efforts are on to fully computerise the library database, which could ensure easy access to books. The library has a collection of over 600,000 books. In 1981 the central government ordered that the library became one of the four national depository libraries. The library, however, is not a registered member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions

One the most celebrated and oldest libraries in the city ! It bears the name of Lord connemara! It is a treasure trove for knowledge hunters , book worms, people studying for competitive exams, and the like. A well kept and well organised library with a tremendous heritage that it carries up untill this day. There are also regular book fairs that are conducted by them.

This library is one of the biggest in Chennai with 3 storey building. Located in beautiful place with neighbouring museums. Very spacious. But the infrastructure needs to be improved. Very few new books are arrival. Remaining books in shelves are old conten. Updation required as per technology. Many of the books are not arranged as per the names in the shelves. Little innovation if done, definitely this one of the old and precious library will be backbone for many of the publics. Anyway thanks to the government for maintaining this library for public 🙏.

Good library, open till 7.30pm on weekdays and Saturday. Sundays it closes the check-out section earlier. Has a good collection of books on many subjects and more of the books are by indian authors. They also have a small childrens section on the ground floor that has a limited collection but has different genres of books for kids under 5-7 years old. They also have a room with kindle devices from where you can access most books online. They also have a reference only section that is open till 5 pm only on weekdays that has more rarer books to refer to. Once you check out books, they will let you renew them over the phone until upto 45 days from check out date. The staff are very helpful. And since it is within the museum complex and is shady because of the many trees, it makes for a pleasant walk in the evenings. There is a small booth that sells hot beverages, and other milk based packaged desserts

The year 1896 witnessed the inauguration of a new and remarkable landmark in the city of Chennai- the Connemara Library, which is a treasure trove of books, newspapers, periodicals and other related texts. A library is a place where you will unquestionably find every text that you can look for. The Connemara Public Library is one of the four national depository libraries of the country and hence, it receives copies of all books and other texts that published in India. Its history dates back to over a hundred years, and till date, the library remains a repository of century-old publications. The fantastic collection at the Connemara Library includes books, journals, magazines and Braille manuscripts among other texts. Located at Egmore in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it forms a small part of the Madras museum as well. A new building was added to the library in the year 1973. This new structure boasts of a vast collection of textbooks that a visitor might be looking for. The building has a video room, a periodical hall, a reference room and an entire floor that is solely dedicated to Indian books. The total collection of books in the library goes up to beyond six lakh copies! The Connemara Library has everything that a literature geek or book lover could wish for. It is thus in no way an overstatement to say that the library is a readers heaven. That the library is well maintained adds to the grandeur of the place. The only drawback that one can think of concerning the Connemara Library is that because of the enormous collection of books; the library usually remains crowded.

I went to the Connemara library with a world of expectations hoping to see a romantic crumbling building with stained glass windows or old fashion desks and books that have had their leaves turned by colonial hands. What I actually saw was a moderately sized administrative looking building, new and blue. Inside was a library, less extensive and less well maintained when compared to the Anna library. People visiting, mostly appeared to be in the text book and reference sections. One thing that stood out was, I found people in the Fiction section sitting in the middle of the bookshelves and reading (probably due to scarce furniture) but it gave a really cosy and nice effect. As Connemara is a name that weve associated with books for too long now, I would suggest you go there once to experience it. I personally dont see myself going back.
