Awesome place within in Chennai for a days visit..has 6 different sections from sculptures, zoological section, real life size depiction of animals, birds area, Miniature structures, ancient civilisation, antique bronze idols all from 9th century onwards, war weapons were displayed and antique pots, various cultures, excavation items also displayed, have a separate arts gallery having paintings of various artists including Raja Ravi Varma, and few contemporary artists too..each area has a very good illustrative posters to read, they have lot of items from even indus valley civilization ..to my surprise beautifully maintained space by government...if you are not fit enough for a full day walk..please split your visit into 3 different days covering 2 sections each and you can spend enough time at each section and learn something really worthy..you would find manuscripts by Mahakavi Bharathiar too..good parking area and nice ancient structures..it looked like a place outside India...my heartfelt appreciation goes all the workers there..for time being all the shops inside are closed due to covid restrictions..hence plan your food accordingly...Inside the campus you would find Connemara Library and a permanent book fare too..enjoy a day out in Chennai Govt. Museum....

It is so exciting and informative. I must say it is really worth visiting the place. Indian adult can get in the museum with Rs. 15 ticket and the foreigners have to pay Rs. 250. Its really worth visiting for it has rare collections of early century stone works of deities from the south India. Not just that, you will get so much by spending just rupees 15. some galleries were closed for renovation but still it took 2 hours for me to make a fast visit. they have kept the place neat and clean and its really a good experience to make a visit. They dont allow camera or phone to click pics inside. I must say the virtual tour screens/ interactive screens will help in a great way to know more about the things presented there. moreover through QR code scanning you can have audio guide. I recommend this place for all those who are interested in the early history of the south India and also for those who love to have information about other facts too.

A killer offer at 15/- per adult. It spans a vast area, and the bulk seemed to be archaeological, which I couldnt focus on, as the purpose was to entertain the kid. But the biological sections were extremely exciting, with the multitude of animal skeletons, stuffings and live motion dinosaur exhibits, which left my kid shivering with fear and excitement.Carry own snacks and water and enjoy the shaded sitting spaces outside as you need anywhere between 1-3 hrs to cover it all depending on how much attention you pay to the exhibits. They frown upon clicking pics/videos inside, but take requests kindly for a few especially with kids. Another thing I noticed was that they seemed to have lots of facilities for the differently abled, in the form of ramps or mechanised rails over stairs in most places.

The buildings that houses the museum all were fantastic and the architecture was fantastic. The art gallery was a boring building but the arts exibited there were fantastic. The works of Raja Ravi Varma was worth it. The museum Theatre was another fantastic building. Very very beautiful . The architect combined the British and Indian architecture. The Bronze collection is one of the best in the world. No were can one see more than 1000 pieces housed under one roof. Truly an amazing collection but saying all this the museum truly needs a big and huge renovation. The biological areas and exhibits needs repairs. Some works on the animals were pedestrian and dusty. This Museum needs BIG TIME REPAIRS !!!!!

The skeletons of assorted species were fascinating, and the little dolls in the childrens museum were funny. Many buildings/sections were closed, the museum is filthy, and the exhibits are a random assortment of objects with little to no description. If youre stuck in Chennai and dont mind spending money, go ahead and try it out. Dont bother whether youre backpacking or looking for a good museum. We have also received food poisoning from the restaurant across the street from the museum.

Nice place to visit. The Government Museum or Madras Museum is a museum of human history and culture located in the Government Museum Complex in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata and is the tenth oldest Museum in the World. It is particularly rich in archaeological and numismatic collections. It has the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe. Among them, the colossal Museum Theatre is one of the most impressive.[1]The National Art Gallery is also present in the museum premises. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, it houses rare European and Asian painting of renowned artists, including that of Raja Ravi Varma.[2][3] It is the third largest museum in the world, and with 0.6 million visitors in 2018. It has the richest collections of bronze idols, 500 of them dating to 1000 BC, in Asia.[4]In August 1778, the governor of Madras granted 43 acres for an estate to a civil servant, who, subsequently in 1793, assigned the grounds to a committee of 24 which then regulated the public amusements in the city. In 1821, the committee sold the main house and central garden space to E. S. Moorat, an Armenian merchant who, in turn, sold it back to the government in 1830. The government first used the buildings and the grounds as the collectors Cutcherry and later for the Central Museum.[5] The museum was originally established in a building on College Road in Nungambakkam in the year 1851 and was shifted to the present site in 1854.

I went with me family on a Sunday afternoon and was worried about the parking on my way to the museum. However I found to my surprise a well maintained parking lot for both four wheelers and two wheelers and there was enough place to park to my car. Around 30-40 cars could be parked. No need to worry about parking unless it is very busy. Was greeted with a very calm and full of lush green trees campus amidst a busy outside. We felt very relaxed going around the campus as the weather was nice as it rained early morning and kept the place cool.If you are going to the Connemara library you are asked to make an entry in a register. However I wanted to see the big Connemara block which I saw in You Tube or in news and I could not find it. I felt lost may be I should have enquired with other visitors. Then we liked the Childrens museum which had state-wise exhibit of terrain and clothed dolls. My kids loved it and we too. There was an audio visual treat as well near the entrance. Interestingly in first floor we saw an old IBM computer which if I am not wrong had an external switch for Fonts. On the back side there is a Childrens open play area. I found a tree with Peoples President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalams photo on it. I could not find out why photo was there however I told my kids and as they already knew Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalams love for nature and trees and said may be it is in his memory or he planted this tree when he came here (am not sure of the history behind this tree however this was the piece of history i shared to my kids). We then went to the Museum which is on the left of Victoria Memorial Hall. At the entrance the Security posted there asked for entrance tickets which unfortunately I did not notice it is being sold in a different block unlike the same block in which the exhibits were there. When I was about to go out to get the tickets he was really kind enough to say, Sir please take a visit and then when you go out take a ticket from the pink building. We felt very happy with his gesture and saw life size oil paintings of former Governors of St. Fort George and also Raja Ravi Vermas paintings. Then we finished the museum visit and took tickets from the pink building which is near the entrance to let my kids know though the security will not see (ticket counter was 2-3 buildings away from Museum) whether we took the tickets or not however we should have integrity and got the tickets on our way out. May be some directions at the front would have helped in buying the tickets first. Then there were three to four more buildings which we could not complete visiting as kids felt thirsty and little tired. So we decided to save the rest for our next trip...Next time I want to visit the big hall of Connemara library, rest of the attractions and also the Poombuhar shop at the entrance. This is one of our memorable trips in Chennai.A must visit place and thanks to Government and authorities for maintaining it.Note: Museum entry timing is 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Holidays Friday & National Holidays. Restrooms as well available. I did not know make note of Connemara library timing.

The government first used the buildings and the grounds as the collectors Cutcherry and later for the Central Museum. The museum was originally established in a building on College Road in Nungambakkam in the year 1851 and was shifted to the present site in 1854.Many additions to the original building were constructed between 1864 and 1890. The core of the old museum building includes the only surviving remnants of the Pantheon, identified from the broad steps leading into it when viewed from the north. Amongst the additions is the Connemara Public Library, built with stained glass windows, ornate woodwork and elaborate stucco decorations, formally opened in 1896 and named after its progenitor. The building was built by Namberumal Chetty and was designed by Henry Irwin, with the interiors resembling those of Bank of Madras (SBI). The design included a huge reading room with a wooden ceiling between two curved rows of stained glass, supported by ornate pillars and arches embellished with sculpted acanthus leaves. It was supplemented with teakwood furniture, marbled floor, and decorative windows. All of these were restored in 2004–2007. The building now houses the Old Collection (pre-1930), which is used for reference purpose only.Gallery inside the museumBoth the museum and the library benefited greatly from the effects of the Madras Literary Society, the Oriental Manuscripts Library and the Records Office. The museum houses a 19th-century theatre, with the pit meant for those who can afford more and seating for the rest of the audience in tiered-seats arranged in a semi-circle around the pit. Restoration to mark the 150th anniversary of the museum replaced 25 fans with air-conditioning.The museums collections had its origin from a gift of a collection of 1,100 geological specimens by the Madras Literary Society to the Government in 1851. The museum, the first government-sponsored one in the country, opened the same year on the first floor of the College of Fort St. George, adjacent to the Literary Society in Nungambakkam, with an exhibit of nearly 20,000 freely gifted specimens ranging from rocks to books. These gifts were in response to a public invitation that did not have a cut-off date. When the mounting collection of geological specimens threatened the stability of this first floor, the museums first officer-in-charge, Surgeon Edward Balfour, who was then president of the Literary Society and serving the museum in an honorary capacity, suggested moving to a new building, which was materialised in 1854 with the move to the Pantheon. A library and a reading room were provided for the public in 1859. In 1864, an upper storey was added to the Pantheon in sympathetic style, giving the museum more elbow room. The library got a new block, now known as the centenary exhibition hall of the museum after restoration, in the northwest corner of the Pantheon in 1876, with a lecture hall. By 1896, there had been built new buildings for the museum (where the anthropological and arms galleries are presently located), the Connemara Library and the museum theatre. The museum grounds also housed the first zoo of Madras in 1855, which was also established by Balfour. A year later, it had over 300 animals, including mammals, birds and reptiles. The zoo was later made a separate institution and was shifted to the Peoples Park in 1863 where it remained, not growing very much, till it was moved to its present location at Vandalur in 1985.An official website for the museum was launched on 25 October 2001 after the government sanctioned ₹ 0.5 million in 2000–2001.

The natural history exhibits were very old and not really well looked after, whilst the childrens museum is pretty laughable (see picture of Indian costumes) It is a good way to spend some time in Chennai, I was just expecting more. For a history buff, the place would be very interesting. Even if you are not into it, seeing centuries old sculptures/replicas and the history behind them is awe-inspiring. It also has an art gallery with a few good works and reptile, bird museum for kids. The arms and weapons gallery is also really good.Public library also has a large variety of books in different genres and subjects.

The museum is very vast. It can take a good 4-6 hours to visit all the compartments. Artefacts vary from Indus Valley Civilization era earthen pots to whale skeletons. It is the ideal place to visit if you are interested in anthropology. Although, the maintenance could be much better than what it is presently.
