Great place to try out South Indian food. Our waiter Ganesh was pretty attentive and intuitive.
Great ambience. Manager and Staff were friendly. The menu had limited option handpicked from the South Indian region. If you are in rush then this place is not an option. Sit back and enjoy your food with patience
Celebrating madras week at Southern spice at Taj Coromandel one of the best south indian restaurants in Chennai. The ambience and decor is from the 4 States of southern India. The usual food that is served in the restaurant is food from these 4 States. We visited the restaurant for the madras week and so we got to taste the Flavours of Madras. We started our lunch with the crispies rice, lentil, Lotus stem and onion rings, served with coconut, coriander leaves, ginger and ridge gourd dips. The kozhi rasam aka South Indian chicken soup opened up our sinus blocks. The starters were star dishes of Chennai, chicken fry, pepper prawns, adai, beetroot vada and fish fry.We cleansed our Palate with 2 very beautiful looking and the most tastiest immunity booster mocktails. One with pineapple jaggery and ginger and another with pomegranate and cinnamon. The main course look us down a food trail of Chennai with mutton curry, fish curry, spiced shredded chicken, special sambar, kootu, idiappam ( string hoppers) kothu parotha and appam. The desserts were the madras week special and the southern spice special with Kesari, payasam, filter coffee icecream, tender coconut payasam and badam halwa. It was truly a grand celebration of Madras week.Must tell that they have taken care of all safety measures. Our masks were down only to eat and to click a few pictures. We maintained all protocols and so did the hotel and their staff.
Nice food. Nice ambience. Good experience. The service was impeccable in keeping with Taj traditions, Will definitely try again. The ambience and feel of the restaurant is very nice. The service was slow and since it was late at night had to request to get the items faster as conversation went on for a long time.
Loved the place ..its perfect for any important occasions .. we went there for my moms birthday and they cut the cake and celebrated it..coming to the food ..you can taste perfect authentic South Indian food..it was delicious. The only con is that the price is high .. obviously its a 5 star hotel it has to be high..
Nice food. Nice ambience. Good experience. The service was impeccable in keeping with Taj traditions, Will definitely try again. The ambience and feel of the restaurant is very nice. The service was slow and since it was late at night had to request to get the items faster as conversation went on for a long time.
Wow Service and Best of the Best Preparations offered
We have ordered for thali.. really very tasty and I liked were poriyal, tomato pappu, sambar, vegetable kurma, and end of meal we are Really enjoyed the dessert payasam.hats off to the courteous very kind service from Mr.Siva kumar and Ms.ishwarya in southern spice. i highly recommend this experience was really enjoyed.
Had a dinner with colleagues on the day of arrival. We had Appam, Idiappam and stew with some other delicacy. The ambience and feel of the restaurant is very nice. The service was slow and since it was late at night had to request to get the items faster as conversation went on for a long time.
Awesome experience... Very gud hospitality and excellent staffs.
Delicious food
Excellent food. And nice service if you can get it. The staff are easily flustered when there are multiple groups. We felt repeatedly neglected and everything took a long time. But if you are not pressed for time then this is a grry good place. Loved the pineapple chutney.
Nice ambience and gesture but food quality is low .. service is slow.. very lazy employees with poor knowledge
Great ambiance and decor! Must visit!
The decor is aging and the menu card was torn at the corners. It took 15 minutes before a server appeared to take orders. 4 of us ordered beer. It was served in 2 different types of glasses. Service was so slow that we actually asked if they were short staffed. This restaurant has no place in a 5 star hotel. We will not be visiting this restaurant again.
Loved the ambience and the service. Food is good, traditional south indian dishes. Nice experience. Of course costlier too.
Great traditional South Indian food. Good ambience. Would have been better if they had some live singing or music performances in the traditional Southern states style as well
They serve authentic delicious South Indian food. The service, ambience, staff are friendly & good.Overall an amazing experience!
Awesome restaurant with great food. Excellent ambiance and wonderful staff.
My ever green favourite place in Chennai! Great food, unbeatable and outstanding service, authentic.. wah Taj!!!!
Its the Authentic restaurant for the South Indian food. The spread is very good and also the Taste lingers .The service is very good .The ambiance is perfect. My recommendation for and foodie to experience it at least once .The Chefs recommendation also makes us easy in choosing .Its stomach happy experience.
Food quality is good, but taking too much waiting time. Kids were restless, need some improvements.
Food was very good. Ambiance was nice. But service the night we were there was off - forgetting orders, not refilling drinks, etc.
Southern spice is the best Restaurant 👌 in the world that gets you the flavors of southern states which you makes me too remember my grandmother cooking . excellent service
Please do not expect any innovative or unique dishes of chef quality. The menu is equipped with basic south and north indian food but price is on very higher side way too expensive as compared to other 5 star/7 srar restaurents. But you can enjoy the luxury of taj and other ambience.. whatever you order has great taste, quality & good service..
Very good ambiance. Excellent service.
If you are looking for authentic south Indian food and extra ordinary south Indian Ambience this the place to go. Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner here. The taste and description of the dishes matches to perfection. Maha virundhu with a three course meal is really surreal. Would say this was the best meal I have ever had and the hospitality made the experience even better. Once in a lifetime experience to have had that meal.
Good spread. Excellent taste. Prawns are awesome.
Wide spread across different cuisines, taste could be better , overall decent experience
One of the best gastronomic experience. Ever! And a special call out to Syed for being the best host.
This is an exclusionary south Indian dining place, not to miss in Chennai.
We came for birthday celebration.we enjoyed lot.its was very amazing.Ms.ishwariya And Mr.bala very Good Care and very friendly this types of staff have special credits goes too taj coramandel.thank you very much....The menu is varied and encapsulates the various flavors of South Indian food.Spicy to mild can all be had here. The starter selection, chutneys and the succulent Andhra spicy lamb chops was simply divine
Fine dine south Indian speciality restaurant .
One of best south indian cusine restaurant. Variety of starter is awosome.
For south indian food variations its the best place in town
Good ambience and the food was very good. The waiter had good knowledge of the food items and helped us pick the right food according to our taste.
The best south Indian restaurant in town. Impeccable service and lip smacking food. Need to try their appam and spicy curry.
I have been staying at Taj Coromandel frequently and if I dont get to have a meal at this restaurant on any trip its like having missed a key aspect of staying at Taj. The food, service, decor, music everything is par excellence. Best thing is the service. Today Shafi served me as always with a lot of care and attention to details. The meal he carefully helped plan was memorable. Especially loved the rasam served as soup. Though Ganesh was serving at the other end of the restaurant he came over to say hello. Same with several other members. This is what really makes a difference. Thank you team Southern Spice.
This place is truly every bit Taj-ly. When I say this I mean hospitality at its brilliant best, ambience at its traditional best, food that tangles the taste buds and service that makes you feel like royalty. Their starters (especially sea food) is a must have and their sweet is definitely for the sweet-lover. Thank you for such an amazing experience overall. Pallipalayam chicken Biryani and special vegetarian gravy was outstanding. Great job done by chef #saravanan and his team
One of the most elegant restaurants in Chennai - attentive, personalized service and amazing rosewood decor. We have enjoyed many a dinner served by Ganesh, who remembers the preferences of every family member! Start with the sampler of banana dosa, adai and kullipaniyaram. And the most amazing dish is the Thalicha Salmon - Norwegian salmon tastefully seasoned with coconut and South Indian spices
Best place for South Indian curry. Excellent ambience and friendly staff. Only downside is comes with a price tag
I have been hear form 2002 and its a delight the servings and the food hits the mark every time and the ambiance has changed in a tone which we will not be able to notice.
Food, ambience and service is top notch. I think they just need to add variety to the menu otherwise everything was great.
I had dined at Southern spice for dinner. I had thought that my meal was going to be really authentic and nostalgic, but expectations really went down a steep slope.I had tried their madras week special thali. It was highly advertised on social media and I really wanted to catch the flavors of authentic madrasi cooking at this place. I felt as if I was eating at a home and not a restaurant. It was warm and a little comforting. The best dish was the prawn- podi eral milagu roast. It is incredibly easy to overcook prawns in a dish that would require wok-style skillet for preparation. This prawn dish was satisfying. Apart from this dish, other items on my thali didnt impress me as authentic-madrasi food. The meal would rather cater to the more milder and sensitive tastebuds. There were a lot of Non-Indian guests at the restaurant and it would have suited them a lot more than local guests. The worst dish was sadly, the aval payasam. It is absolutely devastating to have tasted this dish. I really felt miserable to have even finished off the entire portion. It tasted like a heavily altered akkaravadasal. At this moment, I would not like to call this restaurant as a culinary destination. If you happen to stay at the hotel and you are in a mood for some Indian food, you should book a table and have a meal here.
Very well cooked meal.. since we were not familiar with the dishes the person taking our order devised the meal courses for us... Ensured they were customised to address sharing between 3 people. Very attentive service by the staff. The appam and fish curry was great, but the highlight of the meal was the elaneer payassam, which was just fabulous and one of the most unique desserts I have had. I loved my experience at Southern Spice. They have a wonderful selection of southern Indian cuisines and the presentation and service matched the superb quality of the food.
Loved itAdai is excellent.Their Banana dosa is a must try.It is very expensive. But that is expected in Taj.But food is heavenly.Had lunch and dinner.Dont miss the Pan

I had Delivery from here..food was not hot and too salty
Awesome food. The mutton briyani was really good. But it was the mutton chukka that stole the show. I really enjoyed the podi, ghee and white rice. Great experience overall.

One restaurant in chennai I could probably eat every meal in a day would be southern spice at taj Coronamandal! Be it the starters, condiments, vadams especially the lotus stem vadams are to die for). You cant go wrong with their A la carte or the set menu! Both are of very high quality and extremely consistent in taste! The parottas and appam are delicious with mutton Curry and stew! South indian coffee and deserts compliment the other dishes beautifully! Must visit!
