I live in downtown Brooklyn and this is my favorite local bar. The atmosphere is always friendly, bartenders are very polite and nice, been here 3 times and absolutely will come back!! Great bar for catching up with friends or sometimes just take a book and read at the bar meanwhile enjoying the cocktail! service is 5 stars, cocktails taste delicious always!!
No. Tasteless food and an uncomfortable/dishonest moment in regards to payment. This place is not great. First of all we stopped here for a quick bite. The crisp wine I drank was so ok. Didn’t command it’s price tag. Also the Black sea bass was awful. It’s came on an alleged bed of polenta that looked like soup. There was literally no flavor to the dish. One of the worst dishes I’ve ever ordered anywhere.I am also pretty upset regarding how my friend & I were tricked into tipping 50% of the bill. You ask how? On Sunday afternoon the waiter shows up w/the keypad, hid the whole bill & pre populated the tip amount to 22%. but that wasn’t the strange part, he hid the bill because we were tipping off of the full amount/the Seabass versus what we really got.Mind you, if service was good we would’ve paid off the whole bill but it wasn’t some stellar experience. He tried to pull a fast one so we couldn’t see the full bill. I let it go after I realized what he did and that I had overpaid tip. I simply confronted him and said “That’s not cool to do”. His response “you okayed it”.Wow. Disgusting.Tipping well has always been a joy for me. This restaurant did not deserve or earn a 50% tip. Let’s alone a 20%, & who presets a keypad to 22%!!@GrandArmy- You didn’t earn that tip money, you took it. How disgusting to me as a customer that you would steal from my pockets…especially during these times! When customers are supporting your business.I definitely will not be back. I’ve warned all my friends.
DO NOT COME WITH A GROUP. Rudest, most pretentious staff Ive ever encountered. I went to meet up with my friend for his birthday along with 10-12 other people and we were relegated to a corner in an otherwise mostly empty bar. I went up to order a whiskey/soda ($13?) and was looked at like I had two heads and then not allowed to open a tab. When I asked why, the bartender mumbled something about us not having a server (?) Our group was repeatedly told to not move from the corner spot, which was close to the entrance, even though there was plenty of space in the rest of the bar. They asked us how many people we were expecting (?) and then said they couldnt accommodate any more of us because they were at capacity (?). When two friends showed up late they wouldnt let them in, keeping them outside to demonstrate some kind authority(?) Again, the bar was more than half empty. They didnt give any clear excuse other than we were crowding the entrance, which we were not--we were just a group of people in our late 30s standing around talking and ordering overpriced drinks at a ducking bar. Its clear they just wanted us to leave without saying so directly--the vibe was that we didnt fit the kind of uptight, bougie clientele they wanted in the place. Probably no coincidence that we were also a crowd of mixed POC and they were mostly (all?) stuck up, humorless, white front of house staff. Worst bar experience in 12 years of living in NYC.
The Grand Army is a great place to relax and get a meal. The food is always really great, as are the drinks, but you really come here for the friendly staff. Everyone is really friendly and courteous, which I feel is a pretty rare thing in this city these days. Looking forward to coming back again.
Extremely rude staff for no discernible reason. staff heard openly complaining about there being “too many people in the restaurant” despite it being half empty. general manager seemed bothered by having too many people of color in the establishment
This place is good but has an arrogance about it that can be off-putting. Went there once and the bartender was like, Im going to make you something random youre going to love. Didnt even ask me any questions about what I actually like, and then proceeded to make me one of the worst cocktails I ever had. It was like if Babe Ruth called his shot for a homerun, but then hit a foul ball instead. HOWEVER, the vibe of the place is cool and some other cocktails are good.
Excellent Happy Hour food, excellent happy hour cocktails, and excellent happy hour service. We decided to cancel our previous reservations elsewhere & we stayed for dinner, as well. The place was hopping on a Friday night, but the service, the bartenders, and the kitchen were all quite efficient. I was quite impressed. The seafood and the house oyster sauces were all excellent. I, WE (me & my wife), will definitely be back.
Great cocktails and wines by the glass or bottle. Fantastic atmosphere. Perfect for a date or night out, or a weekend afternoon
Every plate we ordered was the best we ever had. Super nice bartenders. Fresh seafood. Awesome drinks. Wish we lived here!
This place is all about the atmosphere. Great service with great music and seating in the streets on the weekend. What more could you ask for. We always come for the margaritas which are the best around. However for the price they are small, usually not filled up as much as you’d like and also accompanied by huuuge ice cubes which takes away space from the tequila and lime juice 😬 (doesn’t stop us from getting them nonetheless).
Reopened after quarantine - awesome pick up!So nice to see a local spot back after the city shut down for 2 months. I would walk by the dark windows every night during my nightly walks with my dog Ghost. So was thrilled to see them back in the neighborhood. Here to praise their thoughtfulness to takeout, especially to take out oysters. Thank you!
The Chocolate dessert was SO good and I loved the lemonade if you put a tad bit of water in it.
Great food and excellent mocktails. A little pricy given the portion sizes.
Cocktails are wonderful! Though, I was very disappointed in the tiny portion of the crudités for a price tag. I was here a couple years ago and it used to be a normal size that was more than a couple bites. I’ll come back for drinks , but not the food.
Its hard to go wrong with anything they serve here. Some of the best bartenders around.
Very inviting place, the staff was awesome and super friendly. Food and drink was really good. Had an awesome time!
Come here for the dollar oysters. They have little sauces with droppers that are kitschy but Im personally better off with good old fashion lemon and cocktail sauce. The craft cocktails are always changing and super yummy. About the average price range for NYC and what youd expect to pay for a drink shaken with egg whites. The staff has always been helpful and friendly in my experience. Id recommend it as a date spot or a girls night jump off.
Spectacular and imaginative food and drink.Excellent knowledgeable service.
Beautiful cocktails, excellent service, and thoughtfulness around Covid protocols. One of my favorite places in the city - it was so good to get back there!
Smallest oysters in the city. Waiter was rude. Drinks are over-engineered and disgusting
Always loved this neighborhood spot but the new executive chef is really elevating the restaurant to another level!
Don’t rush while your customers are still enjoying their drinks and there are plenty of tables avail. cool. bye.
Drinks are superbFood is just ok and very overpricedService was good
Came here to visit Damon Boelte, host of the Speakeasy podcast, and owner of the Grand Army. He showed up a few minutes after we did, and when I introduced my wife and I, he was very gracious. He wasnt planning on staying at the bar, but made us a few cocktails, and hung out with us for a bit. A real treat. The cocktails and seafood are delicious, and when you order oysters it come with droppers that contain the most interesting flavors.
Nice cocktails and nice food
Such good vibes! I love the fireplace.
Awesome cocktails, great bread/butter!
Incredible cocktails, especially the Thai tea cocktail
Vibes are decadent and service is on point. Thanks for making me a Boardwalk Flyer!
This place is solid. Great place to grab a cocktail or a meal. I have picked up to go drinks several times and they are always quality.Sadly I did not make it there to eat before lockdown, but the food is great! I will definitely be excited to check it out whenever NYC restaurants can get back to full steam. For now quality service, not a doctor, but seemingly solid process in checking temps, cleaning plenty of space between tables, and consistent mask use.
Changed our reservation twice on us. Says online they have indoor dining (false advertising), walked all the way there for our reservation to find out they only offer outdoor seating in the freezing temperatures with small little heaters. Also stated they are forcing vaccine on all staff. Yikes. Walked away and won’t be back.
Amazing service, fantastic food, lovely atmosphere. The back patio is a charming setup with enough greenery to make you forget youre in Brooklyn, livening up your lunch or dinner tenfold. The vast wine selection should cater to just about …
The cocktails at this restaurant are fantastic hands down. The food not so much! The crab dip was dry and completely burned straight through. The pasta was mediocre at best, sauce was too acidic and the giant olives were overwhelming. The service was lacking as well. We waited 50 minutes for our main course and about 30 for our appetizer. This was especially frustrating because the resturant locked down at 10pm and they knew we were pressed for time. I can not say Ill go back. In addition the tip defaulted to 25% and the service was not worth that much.
Really cool place and the only negative experience was our server (male) had this strange pretentiousness that rubbed us wrong. Other than he, would absolutely return. Excellent oysters.
Everything is so good~
UNPROFESSIONAL and EXTREMLY RUDE servers. I ordered on Caviar and went to pick up my order. They asked for my name on 3 separate occasions when I was standing in the freezing cold 30 degree weather for at least 45 minutes. No explanation, no apologies, just said they would check on it and then ignored me and did not follow up with my order. Eventually I overheard them explaining to another customer who requested to dine in that they had an electrical problem. A Caviar employee who waited the same time as me also was asked on multiple occasions whose order he was waiting for until he was finally told they actually did not have the order in their system and he had to leave because it took too long and had been misled. At least 4 other customers were being treated in the same manner. I would have been fine if they had explained the issue however what was unacceptable was to be ignored and not receive an explanation that there were issues with my order, under extremely cold weather conditions.
Excellent from A to Z. The food is very original and delicious: I had octopus, country bread and butter, and and dessert. The staff is incredibly nice. The music is great (neo soul iirc). The place is busy but not too noisy. The bathroom is remarkably clean for such a busy place. If youre OK with eating under very dim lighting (which is a matter of taste), look no further than the Grand Army restaurant.
Came here on a Fri. night for drinks and snacks. LOVED IT. The service was excellent - our waitress specially picked our wine and recommended a ton of appetizers, which were all incredible. Even just the bread and butter were delicious! I will be back for a full-fledged dinner very soon. This is my new favorite spot in BK!
Great cocktails and an atmosphere that lends to conversation. I didnt go for nor indulged in the food, so hard to give it a full five stars, but with an oyster bar, I imagine its something to enjoy. Will definitely be back.
I have to wait my food like 1 hour and 20 min. Bad service
Really good place to dine
Great food menu. Services was on top level. Amazing place. I came back of my office then i saw this place. This place was amazing. Great collection of drinks. Best place for to enjoy.
Good food and vibe overall, the service though... some really rude and condescending dudes coming off a little too strong.
This place had better offerings in the past. New chef changed sll the oyster sauces to sweet sugary sauces as opposed to the variety between sweet and savory. Disappointed in main entrees to say the least. Drinks were great that was the upside
Fast and great service! and the staff are so nice!
Having a good night. Had a decent server who started talking to someone. We ended up closing out with the bartender because we could not get her attention. Sent the bouncer a full block to chase us down for us to explain the situation. Just hope they are more aware next time. 😜
This is one of my favorite local spots. Love the menu and the bar. The staff is always chill, knowledgeable, and conversational. Also, you can beat the oyster happy hour!
Great food and drink. A little over priced.
Great atmosphere and the food was well made. Cocktails are pretty good too. A great date. Night place. It makes you feel like you’re cool again.
Overall good place. Dont like the sauces..too sweet. Wish had the regular less adventurous options
Best raw bar in the area. It comes a bowl filled with vials of sauces to try! I needed to order more oysters to try them all. But the king crab legs are the best. Great cocktails and wine list and your beer nerd friend will be able to find something to enjoy too. They also have the greatest toilet seat ever. I want to get my own. Make sure you look!
Great oysters, great wine selection great atmosphere and superb service. Drew recommended a funky Austrian wine and I fell in love with it. Great little cheese plate as well.Came for the oysters, stayed for the charm
Great bar staff, offered great suggestions and very personable. Food and wine were stellar. The food runner couldn’t have cared less about being there but that’s a minimal interaction.
Enjoyed our time there.
Great cocktails! Dollar oysters are always a plus too!
Fantastic, strong, and clever cocktails. If you enjoy cocktails or a lovely bar setting, dont miss visiting this place. Happy hour had a great deal on food - the oysters had the perfect amount of brine. The wait staff is friendly and fast. Bartenders know what theyre doing and are happy to chat with you. We were here for a few hours and had the best time.
Sharp design to this place. Theyve got a happy hour which includes discounted drinks and $1 oysters. Bartenders are professionals.
As i drink my Smoky mezcal cocktail i wonder why more bars in NY arent doing 1$ oysters.happy hour 5 to 7 go for the oysters!
Good customer service is everything in food industry!!!
Innovative and fresh. Crab fried rice and fish and eggplant were unexpected hits! Pricey, but worth it.
We stumbled upon this place walking around the neighborhood, and wow, we were so sorry we had not discovered it sooner. It has a relaxed and chic feel to it, we sat comfortably at the bar and enjoyed great conversation with the staff. But it was the drinks that were the winners, they were crafted with care and the staff really offered unique selections. We asked for a gin drink, and the bartender made us a creation he had recently came up with. It. Was. Stellar.Additionally, the food was amazing - surprisingly good seafood and oysters. This place is worth the time out of your day - stop reading this review and head on over there!
Very friendly and helpful staff. Do yourself a favor and order the Oaxacan Seafood Ceviche. Drinks were good. Tried oysters for the first time successfully. Over all, worth every penny.
Nothing special about this place other than their offering for happy hour--decent cocktails that are neither bold or imaginative. When you do request a cocktail of your liking (off the menu), you certainly wont get what you requested (that was the only disappointment). There a quite a few other great cocktail lounges around, this wouldnt be my first choice in the hood. But it is a sweet place and the ambience is quaint. Over-hyped place that under-delivers. Still a good place to spend for a drink and a quick bite. I recommend a visit.
Warm ambience. Not too crowded. Just been there once.
The food and cocktails were amazing. My only critique is that we were a group of 4 and told the waiter we were sharing everything, and wanted to know if we ordered enough. He said yes, but when the orders came out they were all so small. The fluke was great but everyone just got a small bite. We left hungry so will order differently next time
Never have my friends nor I been so disrespected at a bar. We were celebrating a friends bridal shower, the GENERAL MANAGER told us to be more quiet because we were too loud!! Did she get offended because we were debating about Jay Z not being the best rapper?! Or was it that we were the only Hispanics in the restaurant at the time, and the GM wanted to put us on time out since we were having a good time socializing and sharing stories amongst women of color celebrating, what was suppose to be one of our friends greatest moments. Thanks for ruining that for us GM of the Grand Army. Seems a bit racist, but lets not even talk about the 2 year old seated at the bar with his parents! That seems worse than have a group of women, visible having a good time at a BAR. how dare you tell us to quiet down at a BAR!!
Very stylish and romantic place. Great place for drinks. Cocktails were good, didnt have food. Was crowded when first arrived, then it dwindled out. Would like to come back to try the food.
Came by Grand Army on a quiet Sunday afternoon, and sat at the bar. Travis, the bartender, was very friendly and knowledgeable. Had some delicious beers (one imported from Italy that Ive never seen before). We ordered biscuits on a whim, and are super glad we did. The biscuit is so damn delicious - fluffiest of all, the one biscuit to rule them all. Highly recommended if its not packed.
Great seafood. Would call it a seafood bar to most of my friends. Our server was impeccably dressed and music was nice.
$1 oyster happy hour! Theyre good and the little bottles of sauces they serve it in is awesome! Of course they serve a good cocktail here as well and there is plenty of comfortable seating. Theres no reason not to stop in here grab a drink and $1 oysters for happy hour! They even do it on weekends!!! Its a great spot to just chat with friends or grab that much needed drink after a long days work! Staff is super friendly as well and I never feel intimidated to order more than I want.
Drinks are good. Great menu. Oyster selection is good.Overall food is good. Not a hardcore foodie place, but great for simple dishes done ok.
Kind staff and delicious food ❤️
A true Brooklyn staple. They have great drinks and the bartenders make some of the best cocktails in the area. Theres also a great selection from their raw bar. Its a cozy and quaint neighborhood bar that I make sure to go to every time Im in New York. Just a few blocks away from the subway as well.
I got $5 oysters and a beer for $11 during happy hour. Really friendly waiter and a nice mid week treat.
Good food, but horrible service. Really really bad service. It’s a shame cause food is actually tasty, but staff act like they do you a favor for just being there.
Great cocktails and small plates. The deviled eggs were my favorite. Casual and upbeat atmosphere. Will definitely gp back
$1 oysters! Fancy cocktails! I havent tried the other food, but the ambience is very sophisticated and great for a date or catch up with a friend. The staff is friendly. A bit on the pricier side for drinks, but thats across the board in NYC.
Good raw bar and attentive friendly service. Although there’s good food prepared with an artistic flair, the loud music was too much. Maybe I’m just getting old!
Oysters were great, good beer on tap, the atmosphere was a bit loud for what i wanted but all good vibes
Nice staff. Great seafood and cocktails. Enjoyed the atmosphere
