Located very near to giant Buddha statue. Its excellent piece of architecture. As like other monastery this is also very colourful , photography is only allowed in premises but not allowed in temple. Excellent paintings, nice premises, very interesting stupas in premises. Please note that almost all temples in Bodh gaya are closed between 12 noon to 2 pm. Plan your visit accordingly

Very peaceful indeed. It has a chanting hall with Buddha statue. The Chanting happens in morning (5 to 6 in summer and 6 to 7 am in winter ) and evening for an hour ( 5 to 6 pm ) . This place also has school for kids, hospital as well. They do have special annual puja !!. It has a lot of painting inside the temple . There are cushions available in case you want to meditate.

Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple is one of the most beautiful and popular temples of Bodhgaya. The temple was built back in the year 1972. Today, it is one of the most visited shrines in Bodhgaya. The temple was constructed as an initiative to preserve and spread Buddhism and thoughts of Lord Buddha. Carved out of wood, Indosan Nippon Japanese Temple features beautiful Japanese architecture. One can find preachings of Lord Buddha on the walls of the temple. The key attraction of the temple is its intricate wooden carvings which gives it a unique charm. The temple has a gallery where one can find Japanese paintings which speak much about the most important events of the life of Gautama Buddha.

The road is rather dusty as it seems there’s some construction going on. Although same can be said for most of Bodhgaya. The temple holds true to its Japanese architecture. However, it’s not as well maintained as the Bhutanese temple nearby. There’s a large stupa and bell as well as a small playground. The playground is meant for the kindergarteners schooling in the compound.

Being a center of Buddhist culture, it is no wonder that Bodhgaya is home to architectures and traditions from around the world wherever Buddhism holds prominence. A prime example of such features is the Indosan Nipponji Temple in Bodhgaya. This is a Japanese temple and monastery that promotes the Buddhist traditions and cultures from Japan in the city. The temple is built in beautiful Japanese style, holding its visitors spellbound. Inside, you will find many exquisite paintings in a distinct style that is native to Japan. The temple, constructed under the auspices of the Japanese government, is open to public from 5 AM until 6 PM on all days. Feel free to walk in and indulge your senses in everything Japanese.

For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha,[4] the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple, located in Bodh Gaya, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Bodh Gaya is the most holy place for Buddhists.[6] Situated by the bank of river Neranjana the place was then known as Uruwela. King Ashoka was the first to build a temple here.[7]Traditionally, Buddha was born in 563 BC[8] on the following auspicious Baisakhi purnima. As Siddhartha, he renounced his family at the age of 29 in 534 BC[9][10] and travelled and meditated in search of truth. After practicing self-mortification for six years at Urubela (Buddhagaya) in Gaya, he gave up that practice because it did not give him Vimukthi. Then he discovered Noble Eight-fold path without help from anyone and practiced it, then he attained Buddhatva or enlightenment. Enlightenment is a state of being completely free from lust (raga), hatred (dosa) and delusion (moha). By gaining enlightenment, you enter Nirvana, in which the final stage is Parinirvana. At this place, the Buddha was abandoned by the five men who had been his companions of earlier austerities. All they saw was an ordinary man; they mocked his well-nourished appearance. Here comes the mendicant Gautama, they said, who has turned away from asceticism. He is certainly not worth our respect. When they reminded him of his former vows, the Buddha replied, Austerities only confuse the mind. In the exhaustion and mental stupor to which they lead, one can no longer understand the ordinary things of life, still less the truth that lies beyond the senses. I have given up extremes of either luxury or asceticism. I have discovered the Middle Way. This is the path which is neither easy (a rich prince) nor hard (living in austere conditions practicing self-denial). Hearing this, the five ascetics became the Buddhas first disciples in Deer Park, Sarnath, 13 km n.e. of Benares. The disciples of Gautama Siddhartha began to visit the place during the full moon in the month of Vaisakh (April–May), as per the Hindu calendar. Over time, the place became known as Bodh Gaya, the day of enlightenment as Buddha Purnima, and the tree as the Bodhi Tree. The history of Bodh Gaya is documented by many inscriptions and pilgrimage accounts. Foremost among these are the accounts of the Chinese pilgrims Faxian in the 5th century and Xuanzang in the 7th century. The area was at the heart of a Buddhist civilization for centuries, until it was conquered by Turkic armies in the 13th century. The place-name, Bodh Gaya, did not come into use until the 18th century CE. Historically, it was known as Uruvela, Sambodhi (Saṃ+bodhi, Complete Enlightenment in Ashokas Major Rock Edict No.8),[11] Vajrasana (the Diamond Throne of the Buddha) or Mahabodhi (Great Enlightenment).[12] The main monastery of Bodh Gaya used to be called the Bodhimanda-vihāra (Pali). Now it is called the Mahabodhi Temple.

One of the most quieter and less busy temples in Bodhgaya.Joining the 5pm daily medition is recommended. A sweet monk plays instruments and chants to begin with, then we begin silent meditation. Very few tourists come here because its not covered in gold, just an elegant, refined beautiful space for mindfulness.

I went to the Indosan Japanese temple this morning. It’s really lovely and peaceful the garden behind is sweet! However, most of the surrounding buildings are now closed or not very well maintained. The library is tiny and so outdated and the former and huge guesthouse “the international Buddhist house” is now closed and covered in dust inside! What a shame as I could have seen myself staying there. The monk’s accommodations need a lot of TLC too. However, the main pagoda and garden are worth the visit.
