SANGAMESHWARAR TEMPLE - BHAVANI- TAMILNADU.LEGENDKubera was flying in the vimana gifted to him by Lord Shiva for his devotion, when he saw this beautiful place on the bank of river Cauvery, where a Deer 🦌, tiger🐅, snake🐍,rat 🐭 cow🐄 and an elephant 🐘 were drinking water together. Under an Ilandai (ziziphus mauritiana) (Ber in hindi) tree he found a lingam and prayed to it. Lord Shiva appeared to him in his Sundara roopam and hence is also known as Alagesan in Tamil (Azhagu = Beauty, Ish = Invisible power, An =holder or Lord)Rishi Parashara, had received a small quantity of nectar or Amrit, which he wanted to preserve for the welfare of the world. He hid the Ambrosia under the ground and started his Penance.Four Asuras wanted to usurp the nectar. Sage Parashara invoked Mahadev to protect the nectar, which Lord Shiva did by chasing the Asuras away.Thanking Lord Shiva, the sage tried to retrieve the pot of Nectar from the ground and to his amazement he found a Lingam in it. When he lifted the Lingam, a jet spring of water burst out from beneath the Lingam. The water coming out of the pot of Ambrosia (known as Amudha) and from beneath the Lingam, flowed and mixed with the waters of the river Cauvery and Bhavani flowing nearby. Hence the place is known as Mukkadal, Kooduthurai or Sangam. The place is also known as Dakshina Prayag & the Lingam Installed by Rishi Parashara is known as SANGAMESHWARAR.HISTORYMahendra Verman l, the Pallava King(571-630 CE), built this temple. The temple since then has passed through the hands of many kingdom including the Chola,Pandya, Vijayanagara, Nayaka. The temple is referred to in the Thevaram a canonical work of Shaivite Saints,(where Tirugnanasambandar has sung in praise of Lord Sangameshwarar) dating back to the 7th century CE.In 1802 a British officer, named William Garo donated a cradle made of Ivory to the Goddess Vedanayaki, for saving him from his house collapse.Mumudi Getti Mudaliars who ruled from Amarakunthi near Salem and who are credited with the reconstruction of the Kailasanathar temple at Taramangalam were the vassals of the Nayaks of Madurai.Their sister Chinnammal is credited with the construction of the Nritya Mandapam as per the inscription in the temple.TEMPLEThe Temple in itself is thought to be a Shiva Linga, and hence the northern entrance of a 5 tiered Rajagopuram is the Nandi Mandapam with a Nandi outside the temple. Before entering, are the shrines of Ganesha and Hanuman. On entering the all shrines are to the right facing east in a four acre compound with the Cauvery and Bhavani flowing to the left. The 1st shrines are that of Rajaganapathy and Skanda on western and eastern side .The next shrines are that of Adi Keshava Perumal and Sundaravalli Thayar with a Lakshmi Narasimha Shrine in between. There are two distinct Dhwajasthambams before the sanctums of Perumal and Sangameshwarar.Crossing this is the sanctum of Parvati known as Veda Nayaki or Sangameshwari. The Devakoshta is lined up with Uma, Maheshwari, Gouri, Mahendri, and Vaishnavi.Next in line between the sanctum of Parvati and Shiva is the sanctum of Vela or Murugan in the pattern of SOMASKANDA.The Sannadhi of Sangameshwarar includes a Mukhamandam with a nandi, flanked by Surya and Chandra facing the lord on both sides of the entrance. An Ardhamandapam consisting of a unique bronze of BHIKSHATANA on the right and a Garbhagriha.Inside the Garbhagriha of Lord Shiva, is a small beautiful Lingam facing east.Exiting from the south the Devakoshta consists of the sculptures of Nardana Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma & Vishnu Durga along with the Sapthamatrikas in the corridor. There are many sub shrines including that of Jwarahareshwara, Dattatreya,Kubera Lingam, Sahasra Lingam, Lakshmi, Jyeshtha,Gajalakshmi,Santhana Gopal, Venugopal with Rukmini and Sathyabhama, Gayatri Lingeshwar, Amruthalingeshwar,Shaneeshwarar, 63 Nayanmars in stone and bronze & the Pancha Bhoota Lingam.

Its a very old and divine place considered to be sangamam of all Gods. Temples are neat and well maintained than the riverside ghat areas. One can offer puja at a nominal charge but has to be cautious of unauthorized touts who can easily empty your wallet.Carry water and snacks and avoid littering in ghat areas. Both rivers appear very dry in Summer. Early morning visit to the Shiva temple and Sangam will be very refreshing.

One of the ancient Temple in tamilnadu... Paadal pettra sthlam.Lord Vishnu, kuberan and lot of saints worshipped this sangameshwara (Lord Shiva).Sangameshwara means Getting mingle with lord shiva. Here River cauvery, Bhavani and Amirthanathi (under ground spring River) are getting mingle and continue journey as River cauvery.Naga thosham, pithur tithi and other special Poojas are performing here.Goddess name is Vedanayaki (Bhavani Amman) and you can feel the mother love from her.In 1804, William Garrow (First British collector of coimbatore region) who stayed in a collector banglow which is just outside the temple. One day in a rainy night, one small girl entered into the banglow and pull his hand towards the outside of his residence, in a sudden meanwhile the banglow is collapsed. Same time the small girl disappeared. He started investigation with the nearby peoples, and temple priest said the our goddess only saved your lives. He saw the goddess from the outside compound wall, that he confirmed the same goddess only came in the form of little girl and saved his life.In this memory of her grace, collector gave a Ivory bed with his signature to the goddess, which is still we can see in the Palliyarai of Vedanayaki shrine.

During the period of Chera Chola and Pandyas there was a cave connection existed between Chidambaram and Sangameshwarar temple and pujas are performed at same time in both temples. In the year 1804, William Karo, a British Collector of Coimbatore district, visited Bhavani, camping in the Travellers Bungalow. One night, when he was asleep, a small girl woke him up and got him out of the Bungalow. Once they were out, the Bungalow collapsed. Shocked by this incident, the Collector turned to thank the girl but to find, she wasnt there. The next day, the priest on duty informed him that it was Bhavani Vedanaayaki Amman, who saved his life. He bore three holes in the temple wall exactly opposite to Vedanaayaki Amman shrine and torched these holes to pray the goddess. He offered a gold plate to the goddess with his signature dated 11/01/1804. The holes and the gold plate are present even now and are taken care with caution.

Bhavani is 16 kms away from Erode and about 55 kms away from Selam. The nearest Railway station for Bhavani is Erode. This is one of the 276 Devara Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 3rd Sthalam in Kongu Nadu.Bhavani is mentioned in the Hymns as Thiru Nana whereas it is now called Kooduthurai by the locals. It is believed that those who take a dip at the confluence spot of rivers Cauvery and Bhavani during the Solar and Lunar Eclipse can attain moksham (salvation). It is also believed that worshiping the Amirtha Lingam in this temple can grant the boon of childbirth to couples.Shrines of Lord Vinayakar, Lord Murugan and his consorts, Goddess Gajalakshmi, 63 Nayanmars, Jurahareshwarar (in dancing posture), Pancha Bhootha Lingams, Kasi Viswanathar, Goddess Visalakshi, Amirthalingam, and Jeshtadevi can be seen in the corridors.Separate shrines for Lord Adhikesava Perumal, Goddess Soundaranayaki and Yoga Narasimhar are also present in this temple.Bhavani is a famous Sthalam for performing rituals to satiate one’s ancestors. Here Parikarams are also conducted for all dhoshams, including Nagadhosham.

Sangameswarar temple (also called Thirunana and Thirukooduthurai) is a temple in Bhavani, in the Erode district. The temple was built at the confluence of rivers Kaveri, Bhavani and the mystic Amutha (Agaya Gangai). The temple was praised in old Tamil literature as Thirunana. The place is also known as Dakshina Triveni Sangamam and Kooduthurai indicating the confluence of three rivers. Devotees perform last rites for ancestors on the riverbank and offer prayers at the Sangameshwarar temple. The temples Ilandhai tree gives fruit on all season which was used for everyday puja even today. During the period of Chera Chola and Pandyas there was a cave connection existed between Chidambaram and Sangameshwarar temple and pujas are performed at same time in both temples.

According to the myothology , Kubera , son of the Vaisira, was  gifted with the an  aircraft for his devotion to the Lord Shiva.  Hence Kubera started visiting all the Shiva temples on the earth.  On his way, he saw an Ilandhai(a small fruit) tree on the banks of the Cauvery where the deer, tiger, cow, elephant, snake and the rat were drinking water,  without any sign of enmity.  It was this place,  that was inhabited  by holy men, Gandharavas.  From the sky, Kubera heard a voice (asareeri) saying that theVedas came to the earth at this place near the Ilandhai Tree.  The voice also said that there was a Shivalinga beneath the tree and advised him to worship Lord Shiva. The Lord appeared before Kubera, and at his request,Lord  Shiva was named Alagesan. The confluence of three rivers Bhavani,Kaveri and Amirtha nathi meet at the temple.  So the place of Bhavani Eswarar is called as Sangameshwarar. This places is known as Parikara sthalam. Rock status of this temple represents the beauty of stone carving and the culture of the people.  When water or milk is poured on the two identical stone statues in front of Amman Shrine, (Hindu goddess), one smiles at us, while the other sheds tears at us. Sangameshwarar temple has a beautiful front view with five tier Rajagopuram along with Kottai Vinayaga in the left and Kottai Anjaneyar in right side.Just like the Triveni Sangam in Allahabad wherein Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi merge together, the Triveni Sangam of South India is in Erode, where  three holy rivers, Kavery, Bhavani and Amudha merge together. This place is popularly known as Bhavani Kooduthurai and several thousands of people gather here during Aadi Amavashy, a to offer prayers for their ancestors . It is believed that if final rites are performed here for those whose death has been untimely , their souls will rest in peace.  Also when bodies are cremated here, the skull of the deceased,  does not burst which is of unique significance.  Thousands of devotees gather here during Aadi perukku to take a holy dip in the river and float flowers, lamps and germinated seeds as offerings to the holy rivers. The Sangameshwara temple stands close to the confluence of these three rivers. The temple is unique in many ways. The whole temple is considered to be a Shiva linga and therefore the Nandi is found outside the temple near the car park in a seperate mandap facing the temple. The Adikesava Perumal and Goddess Soundaravalli thaayar shrines along with the Narasimha shrine in between are found in the beginning of the temple. Again this temple is one,  where Shiva and Vishnu shrines are found next to each other within the same campus. The Sthala Vriksha is Ilandhai maram (tree).  It is under this tree that Lord Shiva appeared before Kubera as a Swayambu Linga.  It is surprising to find that the tree is still bearing lot of fruits. The Linga seems extremely ancient. One more unique feature of this temple,  is a seperate shrine for Jurahareshwara (Lord of Fever).  Jurahareshwara with three heads, three arms and three legs is found only in a few temples in Tamilnadu.  He is found here in a seperate shrine and interestingly the Dwarapalakas in this shrine also have three heads, arms and legs. Offering rice, pepper rasam, and araikeerai kootu (greens with dhal) to the Lord is said to relieve people of fever and other ailments.
