In the month of February/March or particularly say Maga Shukla Dashami chariot festival is arranged from the temple committee and the devotees of this region. Sri Kottur Gurubasavaswara chariot is one of the biggest and lakhs of people attending this festival.

Kotturu (Kannada: ಕೊಟ್ಟೂರು) is named after Saint Kottureshwara, so its history stems from the history of Guru Kottureshwara. Once on the Earth when the backward and the Veerashaiva religion was under threat, Lord Shiva and Parvathi from Heaven (Kailasa) ordered Nandi to go to Sarasipura/Shikapura (the earlier name of Kottur) and protect the innocent people. So Lord Nandi disguised in a form of saint and reached Shikapura.This Saint was later called by people as Kottureshwara (Kottu or Kodu in Kannada means Give and Eshwar means Lord Shiva), the one who gives blessings.Kotturu is also famous for a dish called mandakki: Menasinakai. There are different varieties of mandakki. Devotees make it a point to have this dish when they visit.Lord Kottureshwara temple has been classified into four Muttas (Shrines):1.Murkal Mutta (Three Stone Shrine): This is where Lord Nandi came first to earth.2.Thotal Mutta (Shrine with Cradle): This is where Lord blesses devotees with a child.3.Darbar Mutta or Dodda Mutta (Kings Assembly Shrine or Big Shrine): This is where he used solve the problems of people.4.Gachina Mutta (Meditating Place): This is where Guru Kottureswara reached Lord Shiva by meditating.5.Matikottureshwara temple .Kotturamma (Parvathis temple) is neither the wife or related to Lord Kottureshwara.
