VrksharaajO namOstutE is Dr.Anil Patils mantra. It means O Tree-King! Salutations to you. That mantra is evident in his act of reverence and love towards trees. After much search and calls to various places, I stumbled upon Dr.Anil Patils reference on Google, when I was under much distress, seeing the big amla tree in my front yard dry up over the months. This year too, as ever, the tree gave many amla fruits, but started withering away soon after. I noticed too late, that mealybug infestation took over the tree completely, drawing out all its sap & vigour. (see first 3 photos)When I called Dr.Patil for help, he asked me to sent some photos of the tree and immediately concluded that the tree needs treatment. A couple of days later, exactly at 8:30am as he promised, he came over personally to inspect the tree. Dr.Patils friendly, smiling and peaceful countenance was in itself very reassuring to me. After a detailed inspection, since the tree was over 40 feet tall, he said that spraying pesticide in a manner that could effectively drench the whole tree would be impractical through usual means. So, he decided to switch to modern technology - an insecticide spraying agricultural drone !! Within a few days, again at the precise time he mentioned - early in the morning, he brought in a team of drone operators, along with the required pesticides & fertiliser. The drone was a very big one - and the first one I was seeing up so close. (The neighbourhood was quite intrigued by it when it flew up into the air.) First, Dr.Patil made the drone precisely drench the tree with a mild soap solution (to weaken the fatty coating of the mealy bugs). And followed it up with a specific pesticide that was meant to go down the tree from the top, through the trees phloem. (He also got a mango tree in our backyard sprayed with a bit of remaining solution). Prior to the drone operation, he also personally cleaned up the weeds around the tree, to make way for another pesticide which he sprinkled - this one to go up the tree through its xylem. It was wonderful to see him plan it so comprehensively. Finally, he also applied some fertiliser around the tree and completed the rescue operation. He said that a couple of more rounds of spray might be needed a few weeks apart. I was ready to pay anything to get the tree back to life, and I was very surprised at the small bill he gave along with the receipts for what he had purchased. I then understood he was not doing this for money, but purely out of love for the trees. I had to heavily insist that he should accept some fees as a thanks from my side as he came all the way from a far off place twice - spending his much valuable time. He left that day giving me a few instructions on how to water the tree, and also keeping the pest away from other plants/trees in my house.A week or two passed and Dr.Patil messaged me himself on WhatsApp asking how the tree was doing, and asked me to share photos to see if there was any progress. I couldnt see any, but he was quite confident it was just a matter of time. True to his word, in a week or so, I could see new leaves sprouting from a few branches. He kept checking with me on WhatsApp regularly, giving me instructions on further medication / watering to the tree and assuring me that it would be fine. Slowly, the new leaves took life and greenery came back to most of the tree - barring a few branches here and there (see last 4 photos). We had a chat again today, and looking at the latest photos, he said there is not need for a 2nd round of pesticide spray at all. What a happy ending this turned out to be, from an almost hopeless situation! I do not know how to repay this wonderful persons kindness.About a decade back, this amla tree was sent all the way from Andhra to Bengaluru by as a tiny sapling by my aunt - making it all the more special to me. So, Dr.Anil Patil - I would like to say to you Vrkshamitram namOstutE (O Friend-of-trees, Salutations to you). May many more selfless souls like you walk this mother earth and keep her green forever!
